Abstract Translational research requires data at multiple scales of biological organization. Advancements in sequencing and multi-omics technologies have increased the availability these data, but researchers face significant integration challenges. Knowledge graphs (KGs) are used to model complex phenomena, methods exist construct them automatically. However, tackling biomedical problems flexibility way knowledge is modeled. Moreover, existing KG construction provide robust tooling cost...

Activated leukocytes and oxygen free radicals have been implicated in the pathogenesis of lung injury associated with cardiopulmonary bypass. To determine whether leukocyte depletion could prevent this injury, we used a dog model simulating routine cardiac operations. Mongrel dogs (11 to 17 kg) were subjected bypass bubble oxygenator cooled 27° C. After aortic crossclamping cardioplegic arrest for 90 minutes, control animals (n = 5) rewarmed weaned from bypass, their condition was then...

A retrospective analysis of the records 60 patients who underwent pericardiectomy over a 10-year period (1980 to 1990) at The Johns Hopkins Hospital was performed. Indications for operation were effusive disease in 24 and constriction 36 patients. Six (10%) with pericardial effusion had pain as primary symptom necessitating intervention. operative approach median sternotomy 52 (4 required cardiopulmonary bypass) left anterior thoracotomy 8 Nine (5 4 effusion) prior limited procedure formal...

In contrast to perioperative stroke, much less attention has been paid those with evidence of diffuse brain encephalopathy, presenting as delirium, confusion, coma, and seizures in the immediate postoperative period. To determine incidence, consequences, predictive factors for encephalopathy stroke following coronary artery bypass grafting. In a prospective evaluation 2711 patients operated on between January 1, 1997, December 31, 2000, preoperative risk were obtained before surgery outcomes,...

Background— The impact of mitral regurgitation (MR) on elderly patients (≥70 years) undergoing isolated aortic valve replacement (AVR) is not clearly defined. This study investigates the long-term effects preoperative, moderate MR survival and functional outcome in AVR patients. Methods Results— A retrospective review identified 408 consecutive who underwent from January 1983 to February 2004. pathologic etiology was determined preoperative echocardiogram, were stratified into no/mild (Group...

Eight beagles receiving heterotopic (cervical) cardiac allografts from outbred donors were evaluated by serial 31P NMR, septal endocardial biopsy, and left ventricular pressure measurements for signs of rejection. Early postoperative myocardial energy levels, as assessed ratios phosphocreatine to inorganic phosphate (PCr/Pi) beta-ATP (PCr/B-ATP), acceptable in all recipients. In these nonimmunosuppressed animals, the mean PCr/Pi PCr/B-ATP progressively decreased, with a greater than 25%...

The neutrophil-mediated tissue injury associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is thought to require the interaction of specific neutrophil and endothelial adhesion molecules. In this study, effects CPB on expression CD11b CD18 (the components Mac-1 molecule) were examined; membrane versus bubble oxygenators compared; plasma levels intercellular molecule-1 (cICAM-1), an inducible molecule, measured. addition, time courses complement activation granule release measured determine their...

Left internal mammary artery (LIMA) grafts have better long-term patency rates than do saphenous vein and result in improved late survival. The present study was undertaken to assess the results of LIMA grafting elderly. From 1980 through 1988, 723 patients 70 years age or older had isolated coronary bypass performed. During first 5 years, only 11% elderly received grafts, whereas 86% having since 1985 grafts. Since 1986, use has become routine, with 92% receiving a hospital mortality rate...

It is widely assumed that decline in cognition after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) related to use of the cardiopulmonary pump. Because most studies have not included comparable control groups, it remains unclear whether postoperative cognitive changes are specific bypass, general aspects surgery, or vascular pathologies aging brain. This nonrandomized study four groups: CABG patients (n = 140); off-pump surgery 72); nonsurgical cardiac controls (NSCC) with diagnosed disease but no...
