We report a novel highly sensitive bile acids (cholic acid and deoxycholic acid) biosensor based on PVA/SC12S-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal droplets.
Lead sulfide semiconducting thin films were chemically deposited on indium tin oxide coated glass plates for use as photoreceptor layers in conjugation with optically addressed spatial light modulators (OASLMs).
Herein, an electrically switchable cholesteric liquid crystal (LC) shutter from visible to infrared light was prepared using a dual frequency LC (DFLC).
We report studies on the whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonance of liquid crystal (LC) droplets across smectic-A (SmA) to nematic phase transition. The quality factor (Q) in SmA decreases rapidly with a characteristic slope change at SmA-N In phase, Q-factor is linearly proportional birefringence (Δn). discuss effect topological defect transformation WGM resonance. study expected be very useful for detecting subtle transitions among LC mesophases.
We report the detailed measurements of rotational viscosity (γ1) a bent-core nematic liquid crystal exhibiting positive dielectric anisotropy by measuring decay time optical phase retardation sample. In phase, γ1≃0.25 Pa s (e.g., at T/TNI≃0.92, where TNI is to isotropic transition temperature.), which only slightly larger than values known for several conventional calamitic crystals. γ1 starts increase rapidly below reduced temperature T/TNI≃0.9 showing effect short-range smectic...
Abstract Anchoring transition in cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) was studied this article. The orientational change is not simple CLCs; instead of the helical axis, a variety molecular orientations cells such as planar, Grandjean, fingerprint, and homeotropic were observed depending on chiral dopant, its concentration temperature. It proposed that competition between helix forming power preferential surface anchoring must be origin phenomenon. Keywords: transitioncholesteric crystalchiral...
We have demonstrated an ultra-fast switching and efficient polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (PS-BPLC) diffraction grating utilizing a chiral monomer. obtained 0.5 ms response time by novel stabilization method which is three times faster than conventional PS-BPLC. In addition, the efficiency was improved 2% with much wider range driving voltage to switch device reduced. The polarization properties of diffracted beam are unaffected this stabilization. This can be useful for future...
We report electric field dependence of the anchoring transition in a mesogen on cooling cell with perfluoropolymer treated surfaces. Below crossover voltage V(co) is discontinuous between planar and homeotropic alignments, as temperature lowered, decreases quadratically field. Above continuous tilted decreasing essentially linearly rms develop simple model to account for these results argue that higher regime corresponds driven inverse Freedericksz which director orientation starts tilting...
Abstract When semiconductor crystals are made into the form of thin sheets, i.e., nanomembranes, their properties and behaviors may be remarkably different from bulk counterparts. A plethora fascinating science important applications arise consequently, some which investigated in recent years, there still a lot more to discovered future. Nanomembranes (NMs) provide good platform for strain engineering offer tremendous research opportunities photonics optoelectronics applications. Strain...
We report studies on the temperature dependent alignment behavior of a homologous series trans, trans- 4, 4′-dialkyl-(1α,1′ α-bicyclohexyl)-4β-carbonitrile (CCNs) perfluoropolymer coated cells. Among six compounds in series, one (CCN-35) has only nematic phase and remaining five have either smectic-A or smectic-B addition to phase. simultaneously performed dielectric measurements optical polarising microscope observation. It is found that except for CCN-35 CCN-73, four exhibit discontinuous...
Recent studies of photoalignment liquid crystals (LCs) on chalcogenide surfaces have a rich variety mechanisms responsible for the these materials. Both surface-mediated and LC bulk-mediated were observed. We report investigation toward understanding origin photoalignment. The contributions light-induced optical surface morphological anisotropy studied. Light-induced in film was observed by polarization interferometry measured high-resolution x-ray reflectivity. data reveals lack strong...
Combination of InGaAs/InP heterojunction photodetector with nematic liquid crystal (LC) as the electro-optic modulating material for optically addressed spatial light modulator short wavelength infra-red (SWIR) to visible image conversion was designed, fabricated, and tested. The layer is composed 640 × 512 photodiodes array based on InP/InGaAs having 15 μm pitch InP substrate backside illumination architecture. exhibit extremely low, dark current at room temperature, optimum photo-response...
Planar (homogeneous) and homeotropic alignment of some unconventional nematic liquid crystals with both positive (Δε > 0) negative < dielectric anisotropies are studied on planar (AL-1254) (JALS-204, SE-1211) layers. Irrespective the sign anisotropy molecular structure, uniform director is observed in Al-1254 coated cells whereas no stable bent-core compounds Δε 0 JALS-204 or SE-1211. Alignment properties these two types explained considering steric, short-range dipolar long-range van der...
We report a perfluoropolymer (CYTOP) provides planar alignment to liquid crystal mixtures (e.g., ZLI-2293) that are used in display. found the anchoring energy of ZLI-2293 on CYTOP is almost eighteen times less and pretilt angle slightly larger than AL-1254. It expected low surface high transmission cell will make suitable aligning agent for LC displays as well many other devices.
Abstract We report experimental studies on defects in a nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy mounted cell perfluoropolymer-coated surfaces. The sample exhibits discontinuous anchoring transition from planar to homeotropic cooling at zero or small electric field, and above cross-over voltage continuous 'inverse Freedericksz transition', which the director starts tilting opposite directions two Defects of strength ±1/2 are either annihilated expelled when tilts. On other...

We report the observation of mostly wedge disclinations strength ± 1/2 in a uniaxial nematic liquid crystal. The dense network disclination is stabilized cells thickness (∼6 µm) treated with perfluoropolymer. distribution net defect was found to be Gaussian. scaling exponent obtained from width ν = 0.29 0.08 and good agreement prediction based on cosmological Kibble mechanism. constant relation are compared values reported for lyotropic crystal half-strength by Mukai co-workers.
The results of high-resolution x-ray reflectivity study nano-dimensionally thin arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) glass films reveal surface roughness anisotropy upon prolonged irradiation with polarized 436 nm blue light. correlates the photoinduced and LC photoalignment observed on these films. However, As2S3 film's thickness reduces drastically during experiments, ambient oxygen moisture penetrate film create a second altered layer top thicker As2S3. confirm viability for non-contact material...
