The cardiotoxic effects of adriamycin were studied in 399 patients treated for far-advanced carcimma. Forty-five (11%) exhibited transient electrocardiographs changes. Eleven others developed severe congestive heart failure. Eight these latter died within 3 weeks the onset cardiac decompensation. diffuse nature this myocardiopathy was suggested by: 1. a conspicuous decrease QRS voltage on electrocardiograms; 2. rapidly occurring dilatation and ventricular failure, 3. refractoriness to...

Background— An open-irrigated radiofrequency (RF) ablation catheter was developed to measure contact force (CF). Three optical fibers microdeformation of the tip. The purpose this study (1) validate accuracy CF sensor (CFS) (bench test); and (2) determine relationship between tissue temperatures, lesion size, steam pop, thrombus during RF using a canine thigh muscle preparation. Methods Results— CFS measurements (total 1409) from 2 catheters in 3 angles (perpendicular, parallel, 45) were...

Background It is thought that only a thin layer of tissue adjacent to the electrode heated directly by electrical current (resistive heating) during radiofrequency ablation. Most thermal injury result from conduction heat surface layer. The purpose this study was determine whether lesion depth could be increased producing direct resistive heating deeper in with higher power, allowed cooling ablation saline irrigation prevent rise impedance occurs when electrode-tissue interface temperature...

Background— Electrode-tissue contact force (CF) is believed to be a major factor in radiofrequency lesion size. The purpose of this study was determine, the beating canine heart, relationship between CF and size accuracy predicting by measuring electrogram amplitude, impedance, electrode temperature. Methods Results— Eight dogs were studied closed chest. Using 7F catheter with 3.5 mm irrigated sensor (TactiCath, St. Jude Medical), applications delivered 3 separate sites right ventricle (30...

Vagal stimulation shortens the atrial effective refractory period (AERP) and maintains fibrillation (AF). This study investigated whether parasympathetic pathways that innervate atria can be identified ablated by use of transvenous catheter radiofrequency current ablation (RFCA) techniques. In 11 dogs, AERPs were determined at 7 sites during bilateral cervical vagal nerve (VNS) electrical third fat pad (20 Hz) in right pulmonary artery (RPA). VNS shortened AERP all (from 123+/-4 to 39+/-4 ms,...

Background Typical atrial flutter (AFL) results from right reentry by propagation through an isthmus between the inferior vena cava (IVC) and tricuspid annulus (TA). We postulated that eustachian valve ridge (EVR) forms a line of conduction block IVC coronary sinus (CS) ostium second (septal isthmus) TA CS ostium. Clinical efficacy has driven the use of larger electrodes (7F, length > or =4 mm) for radiofrequency ablation, which reduces electrogram resolution and causes variability in tissue contact depending on electrode orientation. With active cooling, ablation size may be reduced. The purpose this study was to examine effect temperature lesion with saline irrigation used cooling. In 11 anesthetized dogs, thigh muscle exposed bathed heparinized canine blood.
