Sleep deprivation is extremely common in the intensive care unit (ICU), and this lack of sleep associated with low melatonin secretion. The objective current study was to explore effect exogenous administration on quality patients hospitalized pulmonary (ICU). We performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled ICU tertiary hospital. Eight adult respiratory failure caused by exacerbation chronic obstructive disease (COPD) or pneumonia were studied. Patients received either 3 mg...
Abstract Objective: Reevaluation of the validity 1‐mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test (ODST) as a screening for Cushing's syndrome in obese patients. Research Methods and Procedures: Eighty‐six patients (body mass index, 30 to 53 kg/m 2 ) that were referred general endocrine outpatient clinic evaluation simple obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, polycystic ovary disease, or pituitary tumor. One milligram was administered orally at 11:00 pm , serum cortisol levels measured...
In peripheral blood lymphocytes (mixed isolated on a Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient) derived from normal human subjects, cholinergic muscarinic binding capacity was found to increase with age. contrast, patients "probable" senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT) exhibited marked reduction in capacity. Treatment these antimuscarinic drugs associated increased by lymphocytes. These results indicate that may be useful study alterations aging and SDAT, as well evaluating changes induced...
Abstract: The need for test systems nanoparticle biocompatibility, toxicity, and inflammatory or adaptive immunological responses is paramount. Nanoparticles should be free of microbiological chemical contaminants, devoid toxicity. Nevertheless, in the absence contamination, these particles may still induce undesired effects vivo, such as enhanced autoimmunity, hypersensitivity reactions, fibrosis. Here we show that artificial specific sizes affect immune cell recruitment tested a dermal air...
Objective Autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) is associated with circulating autoantibodies reactive epitopes on tissue and that are thought to be pathogenic in the development of these diseases. Antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) a family immunoglobulins recognize variety plasma proteins association anionic phospholipids. These may lead number clinical syndromes including venous arterial thromboses, thrombocytopaenia, recurrent fetal loss. We have studied prevalence APLA patients ATD...
We present a new non-invasive method for assessing hemostasis in vivo. This is based on the analysis of movement characteristics red blood cells (RBCs) during stasis condition. Stasis intermittently induced by occlusion arterial flow at finger root. assumed that under zero conditions, RBC driven mostly Brownian motion, and we characterized utilizing dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique found RBCs diffusion coefficient plasma decreases. speculate most strongly related to endothelial...
Medical school is a very stressful environment with multiple sources of stress, including academic, social and other issues. International medical students are exposed to additional stressors such as homesickness culture shock. In order assess the influence cultural background on level perceived distress, we examined Israeli American studying at same university during period terror. We found clear differences between 2 groups students, Americans reporting higher anxiety poorer functioning than...
Summary Severe generalized myalgias and muscle contractures of the lower extremities were major initial manifestations adrenal insufficiency in a 26 year old black male. The intensity increased skin pigmentation was not fully appreciated until patient’s colour compared to that his brother. Replacement with physiological doses gluco- mineralocorticoids associated complete amelioration symptomatology.
Abstract A 63 year old woman developed biopsy documented lesions of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis (Sweet's syndrome) one week after the onset subacute thyroiditis. This is only second reported case such an association. The role cytokines in development both thyroiditis and Sweet's syndrome may be link between these two conditions.
Abstract: Dopamine β‐hydroxylase (DβH) was purified from rat adrenal pheochromocytoma tumors by a procedure that requires only few purification steps. Tumors obtained small number of rats yield sufficient quantities pure DβH to raise antibodies in guinea pigs. The specificity the antiserum demonstrated immunoelectrophoretic and Ouchterlony immunodiffusion analysis, as well specific inhibition activity. Enzyme studies revealed complete cross‐reactivity between DβH, but interspecies almost...
Abstract Patients with hypothyroidism often have increased creatine kinase (CK) levels. It is possible that there production of CK, but other mechanisms, such as an cell membrane permeability or decreased enzyme clearance were also proposed. Recently, troponins T and I been extensively studied because their cardiac specificity. Cardiac are sensitive specific markers injury. The objective the study was to measure troponin (cTnT) levels in patients hypothyroidism. Twenty‐five primary evaluated...
Summary We present an unusual case of torsion a wandering spleen in 14 year old boy. Wandering is entity which has rarely been reported infants and children. Although patients may be asymptomatic, some as acute surgical emergency if trauma or the vascular pedicle occurs, our case. The treatment this condition splenectomy.
Thyroid function was evaluated in 41 consecutive women with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). In 11, increased free thyroxin concentrations (FT4) were measured. After one week of conservative therapy, 4 patients persistent emesis treated antithyroid agents. Three these displayed other signs hyperthyroidism. Emesis resolved the 7 within a therapy. FT4 levels also returned to normal several weeks. Thyrotropin‐releasing hormone (TRH) administered 10 11 patients. Abnormal TSH responses, suggesting...
Our EC-funded project, (FP6 contract No. 031867), ldquoDevelopment of an implanted biosensor for continuous care and monitoring system diabetic patientsrdquo, addresses the pressing needs improvement blood glucose management through development sensor. This reagentless device integrates a novel nanobiotechnological glucose-sensing array at heart ground-breaking fluorimetric detector, itself using innovative hydrogel waveguide technology. The implant will wirelessly feed sustained stream...
