Many countries have implemented national climate policies to accomplish pledged Nationally Determined Contributions and contribute the temperature objectives of Paris Agreement on change. In 2023, global stocktake will assess combined effort countries. Here, based a public policy database multi-model scenario analysis, we show that implementation current leaves median emission gap 22.4 28.2 GtCO2eq by 2030 with optimal pathways implement well below 2 °C 1.5 goals. If would be fully...
Climate change and development are strongly interconnected. An efficient use of financial resources would, thus require alignment between climate finance priorities, as set out in the context both Paris Agreement 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this paper, we investigate to what extent climate-related official assistance (ODA) before after adoption supports implementation Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, assess donors align with recipient countries' priorities spelled their...
Global climate change governance has changed substantially in the last decade, with a shift focus from negotiating globally agreed greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets to nationally determined contributions, as enshrined 2015 Paris Agreement. This paper analyses trends adoption of national legislation and strategies, GHG targets, renewable energy efficiency almost all UNFCCC Parties, focusing on period 2007 2017. The uniqueness added value this reside its broad sweep countries, more than...
Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement stand as milestone diplomatic achievements. However, immense discrepancies between political commitments governmental action remain. Combined national climate fall far short of Agreement's 1.5/2°C targets. Similar ambition gaps persist across various areas sustainable development. Many therefore argue that actions by nonstate actors, such businesses investors, cities regions, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), are crucial. These voices...
The number and coverage of climate change mitigation policies have increased in the past twenty years, but important policy adoption gaps remain. To analyse sectoral G20 over time (2000–2019), we compiled a dataset mitigation-relevant identified 50 key options that constitute comprehensive package. Approximately half these are not widely adopted. Adoption is particularly low for aim to: phase out coal oil mandate energy reductions electricity heat supply; reduce industrial process emissions...
Recent independent results from numerical simulations and observations have shown that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) increased their stellar mass by a factor of almost two between z~0.9 z~0.2. The further suggest more than half this is accreted through major mergers. Using sample 18 distant galaxy clusters with over 600 spectroscopically confirmed members them, we search for observational evidence mergers do play significant role. We find merger rate 0.38 +/- 0.14 per Gyr at z~1. While...
Abstract During the formulation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, many promoted policy coherence as a key tool to ensure achievement Development Goals (SDGs) in way that “leaves no one behind.” Their argument assumed coherent policymaking contributes more effective policies and supports over‐arching efforts reduce inequality. As reaches halfway point, however, countries are falling short on SDGs, particularly SDG 10 (reduce inequality). This study revisits basic assumptions about...
In striving to achieve the Paris Agreement and 2030 Agenda, governments have opportunity implement their climate sustainability goals more coherently. Such coherence requires coordination of interdependent policies across different policy fields, sectors actors. This paper explores how design synergic solutions concomitantly both international agendas. With empirical cases Germany South Africa, we investigate two independent approaches solution a just energy transition, whereby countries aim...
The 2030 Agenda with its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on climate change were adopted in 2015. Although independently defined, two agreements are strongly interlinked. We developed a framework that scores impacts of climate-change actions all SDG targets based directionality (i.e., trade-offs or co-benefits) likelihood occurrence ubiquitous context-dependent), categorizes them by dependence four key context dimensions—geographical, governance, time horizon...
Abstract The UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the Paris climate target require a holistic transformation towards human well-being within planetary boundaries. However, there are growing debates on how to best pursue these targets. Proposed strategies include market- technology-driven green-growth, shifting sufficiency-oriented post-growth economy, driven primarily by strong government action. Here we quantify three alternative pathways (SDPs), Economy-driven Innovation, Resilient...
Abstract The Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development require unprecedented transformations to sustainability, while maximising synergies minimising trade-offs between two agendas. policy studies sustainability transition literatures suggest that addressing complex interlinkages requires ambitious, coherent, comprehensive credible mixes supported by synergistic combinations of governance modes. We investigate which extent these assumptions are reflected...
ABSTRACT We have studied a sample of 101 bright 2MASS galaxies from the Large Galaxy Atlas (LGA), whose morphologies span early to late types. generated estimates for structural parameters through two-dimensional surface brightness photometric decomposition in three bands (J, H, and Ks). This work represents detailed multicomponent study nearby galaxies. report total magnitudes, effective radii, concentration indices, among other parameters, bands. found that integrated magnitudes early-type...
