Previous research has established that Asian Americans use mental health services less frequently and hold poorer attitudes toward psychological counseling than Caucasians. The authors directly tested whether stigmatizing beliefs regarding illness might explain such differential in a South Caucasian student sample. Using mediation analyses, the examined 2 aspects of stigma posited to affect help-seeking attitudes: personal views perceptions public’s directed persons with illness. First,...
The dorsal hippocampus (DH) is critically involved in the acquisition and expression of trace contextual fear conditioning. NMDA/glutamate receptor-mediated transmission thought to be one mechanism mediating plastic changes that support long-term memories DH. However, their precise involvement processes has not been defined. To examine this issue, NMDA receptor antagonist, D,L-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric acid (APV; 10 μg/μl; 0.5 μl), was infused into DH prior conditioning and/or testing,...
To characterize the relationship between alcohol use and homicide victimization, we used data from Los Angeles City Police Department Medical Examiner's Office to study 4,950 victims of criminal homicides in period 1970-79. Alcohol was detected blood 1,883 (46 per cent) 4,092 who were tested. In 30 cent those tested, level greater than or equal 100 mg/100 ml, legal intoxication most states. Blood present commonly male, young, Latino, categories where rates have been increasing at an alarming...
We prospectively followed an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of girls with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 140) a matched comparison 88) from childhood through young adulthood to evaluate developmental trajectories executive functions (EF) associations between EF dimensional measures ADHD symptoms. hypothesized that (a) would be similar in both without ADHD, the group showing greater impairment across time; (b) changes abilities predict symptoms time,...
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and an acculturation inventory consisting of 15 semantic differential sociocultural items were administered to Chicano college students. Factor analysis produced a four-dimensional measure acculturation. multivariate relationships between the multidimensional MMPI validity clinical scales investigated by means canonical correlational analysis. Two correlations significant. Differences in language use, generation citizenship head...
Deficits in executive control functions are some of the most common and disabling consequences both military civilian brain injury. However, effective interventions scant. The goal this study was to assess whether cognitive rehabilitation training that successfully applied chronic injury would be for veterans with traumatic (TBI). In a prior study, participants acquired significantly improved after Goal-Oriented Attentional Self-Regulation (GOALS) on measures attention/executive function,...
The authors explored the multidimensional aspects of early grief reactions in 201 relatives and close friends victims accidental deaths, suicides, homicides, sudden natural deaths. A principal components analysis a reaction measure revealed four factors: depressive symptoms, preservation lost object, suicidal ideation, decedent-directed anger. suggest that certain features which have been associated mostly with pathological (e.g., difficulty relinquishing object) may be present many, if not...
Our goal was to examine the role of adolescent perceived deviant peer affiliation in mediating or moderating association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and young adult driving risk females with without ADHD. The overall sample included 228 ethnically socioeconomically diverse girls a diagnosis ADHD childhood (Wave 1; 6–12 years) followed through adolescence 2; 11–18 into adulthood 3; 17–24 years). A subsample 103 license by Wave 3 full data for all study...
It has often been suggested that Americans tend to seek psychiatric help for depression, whereas Chinese patients are more likely have somatic symptoms of emotional disturbance. When the authors tested this assumption by studying 99 Taiwanese and 97 American outpatients given computerized diagnoses based on information obtained in a standard interview schedule, they found scored higher measures somatization but also depression.
Primary Objective. To investigate the long-term use and perceived benefit(s) of strategies included in Goal-Oriented Attentional Self-Regulation (GOALS) training (Novakovic-Agopian et al., 2011) by individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) chronic executive dysfunction. Research Design. Longitudinal follow-up training. Methods Procedures. Sixteen participants ABI participated structured telephone interviews 20 months (range 11 to 31 months) following completion GOALS Participants...
Objective: Some of the most disabling consequences brain injury are impairments in executive control functions. Goal-Oriented Attentional Self-Regulation (GOALS) training was designed to target deficits processes with attention regulation and problem solving applied participant-defined goals. In an initial study individuals chronic significantly improved post GOALS, but not training, on measures attention/executive function, functional task performance, goal-directed over neural processing...
