This paper reports on a new satellite sensor, the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) experiment. GERB is designed to make first measurements of Earth's radiation budget from geostationary orbit. Measurements at high absolute accuracy reflected sunlight Earth, and thermal emitted by are made every 15 min, with spatial resolution subsatellite point 44.6 km (north–south) 39.3 (east–west). With knowledge incoming solar constant, this gives primary forcing response components...
During 2017, the Cassini fluxgate magnetometer made in situ measurements of Saturn's magnetic field at distances ~2550 ± 1290 kilometers above 1-bar surface during 22 highly inclined Grand Finale orbits. These observations refine extreme axisymmetry internal and show displacement equator northward from planet's physical equator. Persistent small-scale structures, corresponding to high-degree (>3) axisymmetric moments, were observed. This suggests secondary shallow dynamo action...
An imaging photon detector has been developed for a number of research applications in geophysics and astrophysics. S20/S25 photocathodes provide sensitivity extending to the near-infrared, pair microchannel plates (MCP), mounted chevron arrangement an electron gain about 4*106. At voltage difference 2.0 kV across two MCPs, this is adequate drive proportional amplitude-sensing system based on linear resistive anode, resolution 200 mu m can be obtained over effective diameter 20 mm. Over...
The three-dimensional velocity distribution of positive ions in the neighbourhood Comet Halley was measured by an instrument which included two complementary sensors. fast ion sensor energy/charge from 10 eV/q to 20 keV/q once per revolution spacecraft. It obtained characteristics solar wind flow near comet. implanted 90 with discrimination into five mass groups a period 32 spacecraft revolutions. These observations provided angular cometary formed ionisation gas molecules sublimed nucleus....
This instrument measures the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution function of positive ions at UKS. Novel electrostatic analyzers using 2600 turning angle cover all viewing angles as spacecraft rotates. The has sufficient resolution to measure solar wind well giving full 3-D coverage within a spin period. operation experiment and organization data are synchronized spin. A sample real-time showing magnetospheric boundary crossings is presented.
We present the results of studies scintillation produced by avalanches in a parallel plate proportional counter. It is shown, that for applications X-ray astronomy, background rejection greater than 90% may be achieved risetime discrimination using light pulse. also images individual obtained coupling an image intensifier to counter with fibre optics. Electronic centroid analysis such discussed. Measurements are presented emission spectrum and position resolution various gas mixtures.
A new type of plasma analyser, capable covering the three-dimensional energy distribution charged particles from a spinning spacecraft, has been built for AMPTE and GIOTTO spacecraft. The novel features are use 260° deflection in spherical plate electrostatic analyser to obtain discrimination simultaneously with dispersion angle microchannel position-sensitive readout angular distribution. sensor achieves field view greater than 140°; well-defined nearly-ideal shape acceptance volume...
The balance between the incoming solar radiation from Sun and outgoing reflected scattered thermal-infrared emission Earth, so-called Earth Radiation Budget (ERB), provides information on fundamental energy source of climate system [1]. To fulfil global coverage sampling requirements, ERB measurements have to be made space. Broadband are necessary because all spectral regions in both infrared contribute Earth's radiative fluxes. Geostationary instrument (GERB) will launched Meteosat Second...
Abstract. The properties of low frequency magnetotail waves observed during CASSINI’s Earth swing-by are examined. A maximum in the distribution about half proton cyclotron and a peak at linear polarisation found their implications analysed detail. Data on fluid plasma velocity for observation interval not available thus no unique conclusions Doppler shift influence can be made. This determines need to analyse different hypotheses order understand origin waves. plausibility competing...
The Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument will be the first dedicated to measure radiation budget (ERB) from geostationary orbit year 2000 onward. GERB combines both, spectral broadband measurements and high temporal resolution. bandpass reaches 0.32 /spl mu/m beyond 30 mu/m. A quartz filter inserted at every second image limits region of reflected solar radiation. Every 15 minutes a complete dataset total bands, is obtained for whole area visible orbit. Special focus was...
