We present results from an experimental study on the kinetic roughening of slow combustion fronts in paper sheets. The sheets were positioned inside a chamber and ignited top to minimize convection effects. emerging videotaped digitized obtain their time-dependent heights. data analyzed by calculating two-point correlation functions saturated regime. Both growth exponents determined found consistent with Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, agreement recent theoretical work.

Results of experiments on the dynamics and kinetic roughening one-dimensional slow-combustion fronts in three grades paper are reported. Extensive averaging data allows a detailed analysis spatial temporal development interface fluctuations. The asymptotic scaling properties, long length time scales, well described by Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with short-range, uncorrelated noise. To obtain more picture strong-coupling fixed point, characteristic KPZ universality class, universal...

The spatial and temporal persistence, or first-return distributions are measured for slow-combustion fronts in paper. stationary (perhaps less convincingly) persistence exponents agree with the predictions based on front dynamics, which asymptotically belongs to Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class. short-range transient behavior of non-Markovian, observed properties thus do not Markovian theory. This deviation is a consequence additional time length scales, related crossovers asymptotic...

Wind turbine power output is totally intermittent in the nature. For grid connected wind generators, system operators (transmission operators) need reliable and robust forecasting system. Rapid changes generation relative to load require proper energy management maintain stability of course balance generation, frequency, voltage regulation within statutory limits. Accurate helps transmission anticipating rapid with respect making decision not only for optimum but also trading open...

We present results of high resolution experiments on kinetic roughening slow combustion fronts in paper, focusing short length and time scales. Using three different grades we find that the show apparent spatial temporal multiscaling at The scaling exponents decrease as a function order corresponding correlation functions. noise affecting reveals range correlations, non-Gaussian amplitudes. Our imply overall behavior cannot be explained by standard theories roughening.

Productive learning processes and good outcomes can be attained by applying the basic elements of active learning. The include fostering discussions disputations, facing alternative conceptions, focusing on conceptual understanding. However, in face poor course retention high dropout rates, even become secondary importance. To address these challenges, we developed a research-based instructional strategy, primetime model. We devised model organizing into theory-based four-step study process....

Central goals of higher education in STEM domains include learning problem solving and self-assessment skills. To achieve these goals, we propose a novel method called the Solve-Correct-Assess-Negotiate (SCAN) assessing that includes both formative summative elements. We study students’ experiences courses involving different methods (Course 1 including teacher-led assessment, Ntrad = 53; Course 2 SCAN method, NSCAN 56) specifically associations between students' perceptions method. found...

There is a call for more interactive and student-centred pedagogy in higher education. This also concerns physics laboratory work, where student investigations are too often passive repetitions of close-ended tasks with little guidance from teaching assistants. To address this gap, course was designed to enhance active participation interaction between students A seminal part the whole-class sessions within which had opportunity reflect on orientate towards experimental work. Teaching assistants have a very important role in physics education as they interact with students and guide them different contexts. A multitude of research has focused on how to prepare teaching implement high-quality, research-based techniques. Video clubs, i.e., working group teachers watch discuss excerpts videos recorded from their own teaching, is novel approach assistant training that draws teacher education. This study reports the experiences five participated semester long series...
