Rivers suffer from multiple stressors acting simultaneously on their biota, but the consequences are poorly quantified at global scale. We evaluated biological condition of rivers globally, including largest proportion countries Global South published to date. gathered macroinvertebrate- and fish-based assessments 72,275 37,676 sites, respectively, 64 study regions across six continents 45 nations. Because were based differing methods, different systems consolidated into a 3-class system:...
In many countries of the Global South, aquatic ecosystems such as streams, rivers, lakes, and wetlands are severely impacted by several simultaneous environmental stressors, associated with accelerated urban development, extreme climate. However, this problem receives little attention. Applying a DPSIR approach (Drivers, Pressures, State, Impacts, Responses), we analyzed impacts their effects on hydrosystems (including stagnant waters), suggest possible solutions from series case studies...
Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus penicillata) living in a central Brazilian gallery forest depend heavily on exudates as food. The gnaw holes the bark of certain tree species, and all exudate collection takes place at these holes. Marmosets thus forage ectoparasites trees. In all, 14 species trees were parasitized by marmosets; however, almost activity was concentrated three species: Vochysia pyramidalis, Callisthene major, Tapirira guianensis. foraged more larger near center forest....
Complex environmental issues require solutions that cannot be achieved without integrating scientific disciplines and communicating science to people, decision-makers stakeholders. Nevertheless, although Alexander von Humboldt gifted us with an approach integrate knowledge across aiming broadly understand issues, our current practice largely ignores holistic approach. Here, we develop a conceptual framework for sustaining mountain integrity securing their ecosystem services based on...
Abstract: This work was carried out from the assessment of conservation status freshwater ichthyofauna Bahia State. The inventory data and species distribution were obtained specialized scientific literature representative ichthyological collections. A total 281 native recorded in State, distributed Northeastern Mata Atlantica (NMA) São Francisco (SFR) ecoregions. There a larger number NMA (187 spp.), composed by several coastal basins, than SFR (134 river basin. Among 30 families recorded,...
The number of disasters involving tailings storage facilities has increased in Brazil. Only the last six years, there have been this type structure. Despite vast socio-environmental impacts, little done to mitigate damage caused. negligence mining companies and lack efficient management approaches at river basin-level greatly hampered efforts for environmental recovery. In addition, although Brazil signed 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development, a slowdown Brazilian legislation, which can...
Here, we set target values to measure the ecological improvement of streams, based on invertebrate communities, riparian vegetation, instream habitat conditions and water chemistry. The study area is a large tropical catchment (Rio das Velhas, Minas Gerais, Brazil) affected by pastures, mining areas urbanized but also includes natural protected areas. Two stream types were found in catchment, size, elevation, climate geology with significantly different macroinvertebrate communities. In...
Abstract Biotelemetry, ichthyoplankton and genetic data can provide detailed information about the migratory dynamics reproductive cycle of freshwater fishes. However, few studies have combined these techniques in Neotropical systems. The objective this study was to examine Prochilodus costatus São Francisco River watershed, south‐east Brazil, by comparing ecological importance two rivers species, an undammed segment a dammed one its main tributaries, Pará River. In total, 215 fish were...
Abstract Fish attempting to move upstream through hydroelectric dams can be trapped and killed in turbines. Understanding fish movement patterns provide useful insights for how manage dam operations minimize kill We evaluated the movements of two migratory (Curimba— Prochilodus argenteus Mandi— Pimelodus maculatus ) using acoustic telemetry tailrace Três Marias Dam (São Francisco River, Brazil) from 31 October 2011 16 February 2012. The majority tagged left less than one week; however, some...
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate if the presence of pollutants promotes changes in feeding habits fish species from different trophic guilds: detritivorous species, Hypostomus francisci, and piscivorous, Hoplias intermedius. Both were sampled at 12 sites (with degrees pollution) Rio das Velhas basin, which is heavily polluted by domestic industrial sewage Metropolitan Region Belo Horizonte (MRBH). Stable isotope analyses carbon (δ13C) nitrogen (δ15N) tissue main food resources...
Lagoa Santa is a shallow permanent lake, located in Belo Horizonte metropolitan region, Brazil. In this study, the loss fish diversity of lake over past 150 years evaluated. Local extinction almost 70% original fauna described. Probably, main causes richness were: obstruction natural communication with rio das Velhas, non-native species introduction, change water level, organic pollution, and elimination littoral submerged vegetation.
