Health care-associated infections (HAI) are a major public health problem with significant impact on morbidity, mortality and quality of life. They represent also an important economic burden to systems worldwide. However, large proportion HAI preventable through effective infection prevention control (IPC) measures. Improvements in IPC at the national facility level critical for successful containment antimicrobial resistance HAI, including outbreaks highly transmissible diseases high care...
BackgroundHealth-care-associated infections are a major threat to patient safety worldwide. Transmission is mainly via the hands of health-care workers, but compliance with recommendations usually low and effective improvement strategies needed. We assessed effect WHO's strategy for hand hygiene in five countries.MethodsWe did quasi-experimental study between December, 2006, 2008, at six pilot sites (55 departments 43 hospitals) Costa Rica, Italy, Mali, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia. A step-wise...
The Ebola virus disease outbreak in west Africa and the rapid spread of other emerging viruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome or Middle East coronaviruses, showed how limited non-existent infection prevention control (IPC) programmes, combined with an inadequate water supply, poor sanitation, a weak hygiene infrastructure health facilities, can threaten global security. In outbreaks, instead serving points where was controlled, health-care facilities became dangerous places for...
Twenty nine young children with severe recurrent asthma were given nebulised beclomethasone dipropionate or normal saline in a double blind manner over six month period. Progress was monitored using diary score cards. Those receiving had lower symptom scores, more free days, and required less additional treatment bronchodilator agents. The code needed to be broken frequently if used. Over the study period height weight increases two groups similar, no serious side effects noted.
Around 5–15% of all hospital patients worldwide suffer from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and years excessive antimicrobial use in human animal medicine have created emerging resistance (AMR). A considerable amount evidence-based measures been published to address these challenges, but the largest challenge seems be their implementation. In June 2017, a total 42 experts convened at Geneva IPC-Think Tank discuss four domains implementation science: 1) teaching skills; 2) fostering...
Surgical site infection (SSI) rates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) range from 8 to 30% of procedures, making them the most frequent healthcare-acquired (HAI) with substantial morbidity, mortality, economic impacts. Presented here is an approach surgical prevention based on surveillance focused five critical areas identified by international experts. These include1. Collecting valid, high-quality data;2. Linking HAIs incapacity, underscoring need prioritize activities;3....
Abstract Objective: To identify global research priorities for improving hand hygiene in healthcare settings and develop a 2023–2030 agenda to guide funding, coordinate research, promote investment, inform policy enhanced quality safety. Design: Expert consensus study using modified Delphi process. Participants: A 105-member panel of international experts including the World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Advisory Group Experts on Hand Hygiene Healthcare representing all WHO regions...
The admission rate for asthma at a children's hospital was studied over an 11 year period. Admissions varied unpredictably periods of few days, but there repeated yearly pattern peaks and troughs with interval several weeks. short term variation could be attributed to chance effects alone, excluding any important role influences--for example, weather changes--in precipitating admissions. There definite association between the longer school holidays. fell during holidays were two or more...
An eight fold rise in asthma admissions to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children, Brighton occurred over 15 year period 1971-85. The cause was an increase number of children seen, rather than increased readmission. initial associated with introduction nebulised salbutamol 1976. concerned were mainly 5 years old. Three later came a larger influx younger children. Circumstances leading examined prospective study one period. There 605 admissions, 437 (72%) self referrals. commonest...
The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has again demonstrated the critical role of effective infection prevention and control (IPC) implementation to combat infectious disease threats. Standards such as World Health Organization (WHO) IPC minimum requirements offer a basis, but robust evidence on strategies in low-resource settings remains limited. We aimed qualitatively assess themes these settings.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with experts from settings, guided by...
