A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of autologous blood stem cell transplantation (ABSCT) in terms haemopoietic reconstitution after ablative chemotherapy or chemo‐radiotherapy. 55 patients with malignancies, observed four Italian institutions from January 1987 June 1991, were eligible for evaluation. This series included 19 non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma, 11 multiple myeloma, nine ovarian cancer, seven Hodgkin's disease, non‐lymphocytic leukaemia, one acute lymphoblastic...

The efficacy of oral prophylaxis with ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin or pefloxacin was assessed in preventing bacterial infection neutropenic patients treatment being allocated randomly before beginning chemotherapy. Bacteraemia developed six 78 episodes (8%) treated eight 80 (10%) to and 12 77 (16%) when given. However, there were no involving Gram-negative bacilli among those given ciprofloxacin whereas three seven occurred respectively (P = 0⋅013). With the exception Pseudomonas aeruginosa, all...

Abstract Objectives We evaluated how the Severe Acute Respiratory disease from Coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) epidemic impacted transfusion services, support required by Covid‐19 patients and their clinical outcome. Background In Italy, first confirmed case of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection was registered on 21 February 2020. As 20 April, about 250 000 cases were registered, 1143 which in province Pescara. Methods compared services provided blood centre Pescara between 1 March April 2019 assessed number...

BACKGROUND Despite the prophylactic use of platelet transfusion, hemorrhagic complications still represent an important cause morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic malignancies. Patient‐related factors characteristics transfused product can affect transfusion efficacy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS The aim this study was to develop validate Platelet Efficacy Score (PEscore), based on patient characteristics, predict likelihood a satisfactory (absolute increment ≥10.5 × 10 9 /L)....

Two hundred and eighty-four febrile episodes in immunocompromised patients were treated with ceftriaxone alone or combination amikacin. In the ceftriaxone-treated group, 60 out of 143 microbiologically documented, while group receiving therapy, there 32 140 (p = 0.0007). Gram-positive microorganisms more common than gram-negative ones, accounting for 59 101 isolated bacteria. The regimen appeared to have a response rate comparable (73.91 vs. 78.88%). Superinfections occurred under both regimens.

ABO antibody titres are important in many clinical decisions; however, much variability is observed titre results. For reliable and reproducible results, automated titration methods have been developed. In this 10-site study, we evaluated the equivalency of assays on Galileo NEO, a fully blood bank analyzer (Immucor, Inc.) to manual with gel Column Agglutination Technology (CAT), as well reproducibility both methods.Ten different locations participated study. The study included 70 random...

We have analyzed the results of a multicenter study on peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) performed 55 patients suffering from various neoplastic diseases. After myeloablative therapy, they received mediam 6.8x10 8 /kg MNC and 11.4x10 4 CFU-GM harvested by median 9 apheresis after mobilization with chemotherapy alone. As date, 34 are alive 28 them in continuous complete remission follow-up 30 months. The probability survival was related to disease status at transplant, CR/PR...

Twenty-three patients with malignant lymphoma, (7 Hodgkin's, and 16 non-Hodgkin's) in different phases of disease were autografted 4 Italian Haematology institutions using only chemotherapy-mobilized blood stem cells (BSC) collected by apheresis. We compared the in vitro and vivo function of fresh stored platelet concentrates (PCs) collected by an automated continuous-flow blood cell separator (CS 3000 Fenwal) a closed-system apheresis kit order to evaluate possibility extending storage time seven days with polyolefin container (PL-732). The initial 220 ml volume (5.14 ± 1.23 x 10 11 ) was divided into two parts. Half transfused other half for 7 days. All cultured units were negative bacterial contamination. Mean counts platelets...

In this paper the impact of hemapheresis technology on 238 allogeneic bone marrow transplants performed in Pescara from 1982 through 1993 is described. Granulocyte transfusions were limited to patients with neutrophil level <0.2x10 9 /L. An average 4 units packed red blood cells required maintain adequate hemoglobin levels. Patients major ABO incompatibility showed an increased requirement cell support as compared ABO-matched and minor mismatched. For platelet single-donor platelets...
