We used monoclonal antibodies to identify occult micrometastases in the bone marrow of 49 patients with operable (stage I and II) breast carcinoma. Follow-up (mean, 29 months; median, 30 months) revealed that 12 recurred. The presence (BMM) was significantly associated early recurrence (P less than .04). estimated 2-year rate for no BMM detected (BMM-) 3%; BMM, 33%. When axillary lymph node (LN) status were combined, groups at low risk (LN-, BMM-; rate, 0%) high (LN+, BMM+; 42%) identified....

Estrogens are potent mammary tumor promoters influencing post-initiation events via epigenetic mechanisms. The upregulation (i.e., induction) of the C16 alpha-hydroxylation pathway during 17 beta-estradiol (E2) biotransformation has been associated with cell transformation. action E2 metabolites on tumorigenic transformation, however, is poorly understood. The newly established epithelial line C57/MG, derived from C57BL mouse strain, was used to examine whether or its metabolites,...

Abstract Women with a mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 face lifetime risk of breast cancer ∼80%, and following the first diagnosis the10‐year contralateral is ∼30%. It has been shown that both tamoxifen oophorectomy prevent cancer, but it not clear whether there benefit giving to women who have previously undergone an oophorectomy. Furthermore, relative degree protection carriers well evaluated. We studied 285 bilateral mutation, 751 control unilateral matched case‐control study. Control were...

To characterize the clinical and pathologic features of patients who developed breast cancer (BC) after treatment for Hodgkin's disease (HD). Recent epidemiologic studies have shown that women are cured HD an increased risk developing BC.The data, mammograms, specimens 37 45 BCs (eight bilateral events), had a prior history were analyzed. The median age at diagnosis was 27 years (range, 11 to 60). All received radiotherapy (RT) upper part their body, 10 also chemotherapy HD. The interval from...

The anatomy of the labyrinth lamprey ( Lampetra fluviatilis ) is described. ampullae two semicircular canals are each equipped with a complex three-armed sensory crista. They may be considered homologues ampullae vertical gnathostomes. However, complexity their cristae encourages assumption that they cover spatial range responses to angular acceleration which includes accelerations in horizontal plane controlled gnathostomes by semi-circular canal. otolith-bearing end organs found located...

Background: Indole-3-carbinol (13C), a compound found in cabbage, broccoli, and brussels sprouts, inhibits the growth of mammary tumors when fed to certain strains mice. The chemopreventive antitumor effects 13C depend on species tissue type. mechanism action specific human cell types that respond are not known. Purpose: Our purpose was study I3C estrogen-responsive (MCF-7) estrogen-nonresponsive(MDAMB-231) breast cancer lines. Methods: Estrogen responsiveness determined by ability estradiol...

Thirty-five to 40% of patients with operable breast carcinoma develop metastases after primary therapy. There is a need for more specific prognostic parameters identify who are most likely benefit from adjuvant The success such treatment stems its ability eradicate preclinical microscopic metastases. bone marrow an accessible and frequent site Following studies Redding et al. Abstract Activated platelets release micromolar concentrations of the chemokine CXCL4/Platelet Factor-4. Deposition CXCL4 onto vascular endothelium is involved in atherosclerosis, facilitating monocyte arrest and recruitment by an as yet, unidentified receptor. Here, we demonstrate that drives chemotaxis monocytic cell line THP-1. Migration intracellular calcium responses induced were pertussis toxin-sensitive, implicating a GPCR signal transduction. Cell treatment with chondroitinase ABC...

Summary Mice that did not contain antibodies to rotavirus were orally infected with murine (EDIM strain) and observed over 7 days. As judged by ELISA, only the small intestine was infected, colon. The infection biphasic, viral antigen peaks being at 48 h approximately 120 post-infection. Clinically evident diarrhoea maximal 72 h. Virus in upper, middle lower regions of mainly tissue-associated; most virus found intestine. Two (48 post-infection) colon, but these corresponded luminal,...

Aberrant proliferation is an early-occurring intermediate event in carcinogenesis whose inhibition may represent preventive intervention. Indole-3-carbinol (13C), a glucosinolate metabolite from cruciferous vegetables, inhibits organ site rodent models. Clinically relevant biochemical and cellular mechanisms for the anticarcinogenic effects of 13C, however, remain unclear. Experiments were conducted on reduction mammoplasty derived 184-B5 cells initiated with chemical carcinogen (184-B5/BP)...
