This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by need for stronger harmonisation research efforts. The procedure involved public consultation through online media, followed two workshops which large number potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite diversity participants (230 scientists total), process revealed much about priorities state our science: preference continuity...

Abstract In order to investigate the behaviour of climatic and hydrological variables, several statistical stochastic techniques are currently applied time series. present study a analysis annual seasonal precipitation has been performed over 109 cumulated rainfall series with more than 50 years data observed in region Southern Italy (Calabria). Trend analyses have made by using both nonparametric (Mann–Kendall test) parametric (linear regression analysis) procedures. The long historical...

Abstract. This study investigates precipitation variability in five regions of Southern Italy (Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily) using a homogeneous database about 70 rain gauges with more than 50 years observation. First, statistical analysis was performed through the Mann-Kendall non-parametric test order to determine rainfall trend on both yearly seasonal scales. Then, relationship between some teleconnection pattern indexes investigated Spearman's test. The results show...

A deficit in precipitation may impact greatly on soil moisture, snowpack, stream flow, groundwater, and reservoir storage. Among the several approaches available to analyze this phenomenon, one of most applied is analysis dry spells. In paper, an investigation spatial temporal patterns spells, a region southern Italy, has been carried out daily dataset. First, frequency distributions sequences days have analyzed. Then, regional areas affected by events evaluated at annual seasonal scale....

ABSTRACT The analyses of temperature extremes can be very useful because they are highly representative the climatic tendency an area. In this study, 19 series registered in southern Italy have been analysed for detecting trends through Mann–Kendall non‐parametric test. tendencies detected since 1951 maximum and minimum monthly temperatures several indices daily extremes. As a result, mainly denote positive trend spring summer months marked negative one September. Moreover, analysis on...

Abstract Changes in the statistical distribution of rainfall amounts have been studied four Mediterranean regions: French and Spanish coasts, Sardinia Island, Calabrian region, Italy. The largest precipitation series (from 70 to 150 years) these zones collected at yearly monthly time scales by means different parametric nonparametric techniques. Nonparametric procedures focussed on continuous changes, while possible changes end 20th century developing a method. Among results obtained,...

Abstract In this paper, an investigation on the temporal variability of seasonal and annual rainfall in Calabria region (southern Italy) was carried out using a homogeneous gap-filled monthly dataset 129 rain gauges period 1951–2006. particular, possible trends have been assessed by means Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) technique, which allows identification trend low, medium high values series. Moreover, results obtained with ITA compared ones Mann–Kendall test. These analyses performed...

Abstract Several studies evidenced the importance of knowledge bioclimatic comfort for improving people’s quality life. Temperature and relative humidity are main variables related to climatic comfort/discomfort, influencing environmental stress in human body. In this study, a stochastic approach is proposed characterizing conditions through Humidex values six sites Calabria (southern Italy), region often hit by heat waves summer months. This study presents an analysis of daily rainfall categories over a region southern Italy using set homogenous precipitation series for the period 1916–2006. Six have been considered: Light, 0–4 mm/day; Light-Moderate, 4–16 Moderate-Heavy, 16–32 Heavy, 32–64 Heavy-Torrential, 64–128 Torrential, 128-up mm/day. Results showed that Moderate-Heavy and Heavy are main contributors to total annual rainfall. Moreover, trend through Mann-Kendall test decreasing higher increasing weaker categories.
