This paper is the outcome of a community initiative to identify major unsolved scientific problems in hydrology motivated by need for stronger harmonisation research efforts. The procedure involved public consultation through online media, followed two workshops which large number potential science questions were collated, prioritised, and synthesised. In spite diversity participants (230 scientists total), process revealed much about priorities state our science: preference continuity...
Abstract In order to investigate the behaviour of climatic and hydrological variables, several statistical stochastic techniques are currently applied time series. present study a analysis annual seasonal precipitation has been performed over 109 cumulated rainfall series with more than 50 years data observed in region Southern Italy (Calabria). Trend analyses have made by using both nonparametric (Mann–Kendall test) parametric (linear regression analysis) procedures. The long historical...
Abstract. This study investigates precipitation variability in five regions of Southern Italy (Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily) using a homogeneous database about 70 rain gauges with more than 50 years observation. First, statistical analysis was performed through the Mann-Kendall non-parametric test order to determine rainfall trend on both yearly seasonal scales. Then, relationship between some teleconnection pattern indexes investigated Spearman's test. The results show...
In the present study, an approach for a climate characterization based on statistical analysis of monthly precipitation and temperature data is presented. First, original database (1916–2010) was homogenized geostatistical carried out to characterize mean distribution two variables in study area. Then, temporal change were evaluated through Mann–Kendall test. Finally, better assess patterns Calabria, climatic by means Péguy climograph. Results have shown decreasing trend autumn–winter...
A deficit in precipitation may impact greatly on soil moisture, snowpack, stream flow, groundwater, and reservoir storage. Among the several approaches available to analyze this phenomenon, one of most applied is analysis dry spells. In paper, an investigation spatial temporal patterns spells, a region southern Italy, has been carried out daily dataset. First, frequency distributions sequences days have analyzed. Then, regional areas affected by events evaluated at annual seasonal scale....
ABSTRACT The analyses of temperature extremes can be very useful because they are highly representative the climatic tendency an area. In this study, 19 series registered in southern Italy have been analysed for detecting trends through Mann–Kendall non‐parametric test. tendencies detected since 1951 maximum and minimum monthly temperatures several indices daily extremes. As a result, mainly denote positive trend spring summer months marked negative one September. Moreover, analysis on...
Abstract Changes in the statistical distribution of rainfall amounts have been studied four Mediterranean regions: French and Spanish coasts, Sardinia Island, Calabrian region, Italy. The largest precipitation series (from 70 to 150 years) these zones collected at yearly monthly time scales by means different parametric nonparametric techniques. Nonparametric procedures focussed on continuous changes, while possible changes end 20th century developing a method. Among results obtained,...
Abstract In this paper, an investigation on the temporal variability of seasonal and annual rainfall in Calabria region (southern Italy) was carried out using a homogeneous gap-filled monthly dataset 129 rain gauges period 1951–2006. particular, possible trends have been assessed by means Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) technique, which allows identification trend low, medium high values series. Moreover, results obtained with ITA compared ones Mann–Kendall test. These analyses performed...
Stochastic simulators can effectively generate the intrinsic variability of rainfall process, which is an important issue in analysis projections uncertainties. In this paper, a procedure for stochastic modeling precipitation at monthly scale proposed. The model adopts variable transformations, are finalized to deseasonalization and Gaussianization includes testing autocorrelation. was applied homogeneous database values registered 12 rain gauges region Calabria (Southern Italy). After...
Abstract Several studies evidenced the importance of knowledge bioclimatic comfort for improving people’s quality life. Temperature and relative humidity are main variables related to climatic comfort/discomfort, influencing environmental stress in human body. In this study, a stochastic approach is proposed characterizing conditions through Humidex values six sites Calabria (southern Italy), region often hit by heat waves summer months. The essential, because available time series...
This study presents an analysis of daily rainfall categories over a region southern Italy using set homogenous precipitation series for the period 1916–2006. Six have been considered: Light, 0–4 mm/day; Light-Moderate, 4–16 Moderate-Heavy, 16–32 Heavy, 32–64 Heavy-Torrential, 64–128 Torrential, 128-up mm/day. Results showed that Moderate-Heavy and Heavy are main contributors to total annual rainfall. Moreover, trend through Mann-Kendall test decreasing higher increasing weaker categories.
In this study, the land use change in a large basin of Calabria region (southern Italy) subjected to extensive reforestation at end '50 has been carefully reconstructed and compared with current situation. The runoff capacity was estimated using data available for temporal periods before after interventions. results show that surface interested by former activities did not affect runoff, probably due trade-off between effects concurrent increase urbanized degraded areas. Indeed, hydrological...
One of the most evident consequences global atmospheric warming is modification water cycle. Precipitation plays a crucial role in process and its variations can affect resources, natural environments human activities. In this paper, an investigation temporal rainfall variability Calabria region (southern Italy) has been carried out using homogeneous gap-filled monthly dataset 129 rain gauges with more than 50 years observation period 1951–2006. Possible trends annual values have detected by...
A study on the impact of silvicultural practices water balance was carried out in a watershed Calabria, southern Italy, prevalent cover which is Calabrian pine stands. thinning 1993, removed 50% total number trees (about 30% basal area), and catchment hydrological response before after intervention compared. After thinning, differences were observed yearly runoff, with significant increase groundwater flow during spring summer. In light this evidence, we assume that interventions can...
The present article investigates dry and wet periods in a large area of the Mediterranean basin. First, stochastic model was applied to homogeneous database monthly precipitation values 46 rain gauges five regions southern Italy. In particular, after estimating parameters, set 104 years for each gauge generated by means Monte Carlo technique. Then, were analyzed through application standardized index (SPI) over 3-month 6-month timespan (short-term) 12-month 24-month period (long-term). As...
The investigation of the statistical links between changes in temperature and rainfall, though not widely achieved past, is an interesting issue because their physical interdependence difficult to point out. Aiming at detecting possible trends with a pooled approach, correlative analysis rainfall has been carried out by comparing standardized anomalies from two different 30-year time periods. procedure applied series seasonal mean cumulative observed four sites Calabria region (Southern...
Abstract. A stochastic model based on a non-homogeneous Poisson process, characterised by time-dependent intensity of rainfall occurrence, is employed to explain seasonal effects daily rainfalls exceeding prefixed threshold values. The data modelling has been performed with partition observed into calibration period for parameter estimation and validation checking occurrence process changes. applied set rain gauges located in different geographical areas Southern Italy. results show good fit...
