Objective: To perform genetic linkage analysis in a family affected with ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Thirteen patients with healthy hearts and lungs, a mean age of 68 years, who were scheduled for lower abdominal surgery during isoflurane anaesthesia muscular paralysis, investigated arterial blood gases, spirometry, pulmonary x‐ray computed tomography (CT) the chest before anaesthesia, as well first 4 postoperative days. Before lung function gas exchange normal in all patients. Pulmonary CT scans lungs also normal. During 6 13 developed atelectasis (mean 1.0% intrathoracic transverse area...
Abstract Background and Purpose. One must understand the potentials limitations of all tests used to evaluate interventions. The aim present study was clarify reproducibility, smallest percentage difference needed be able detect a genuine change correlation regarding 10‐m 30‐m timed walks (10TW, 30TW) ‘timed up go’ (TUG) test in people with moderate multiple sclerosis (MS). Method. A repeated‐measures design used, randomization into two groups different time intervals for testing. 10TW 30TW...
Motor neurone disease (MND) was studied in relation to various determinants a case-control study covering nine counties southern Sweden. A questionnaire about occupational exposures, medical history, lifestyle factors etc given all cases the age range 45-79 and random sample of 500 population controls same range. The questionnaires were answered by 92 372 controls, response rate 85% 75% respectively. Among men high Mantel-Haenszel odds ratios (MHORs) obtained for electricity work (MHOR =...
This study explores and describes factors that persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) perceive as being related to accidental falls.A qualitative content analysis primarily deductive approach was conducted using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability Health. Twelve MS, identified fallers, were interviewed.Factors perceived cause falls had not previously been targeted in MS populations relation divided attention, reduced muscular endurance, fatigue heat sensitivity....
The epidemiology of neuromuscular diseases was studied in the county Örebro, Sweden (study population 270,000). Several different sources data were utilized, compared and validated. On prevalence day (January 1,1988) 474 patients identified. rate per 100,000 92 for postpolio sequelae (PPS) 84 other (motor neuron disease 9, hereditary neuropathies myoneural disorders 16, myotonic 19, muscular dystrophies 20 myositis 11). Of with PPS, 80% reported late-onset symptoms. basis an expanded survey...
Gas exchange impairment and the development of atelectasis during enflurane anaesthesia were studied in 10 patients (mean age 70 yrs) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Awake, no patient displayed as assessed by computed X-ray tomography. The ventilation/perfusion distribution (VA/Q), multiple inert gas elimination technique, an increased dispersion VA/Q ratios (the logarithmic standard deviation perfusion distribution, mean log Q SD 0.99; upper 95% confidence limit normal...
In the county of Orebro, Sweden, 32 individuals with myotonic disorders and 25 other types muscular dystrophy were examined. Disability was assessed functional tests standardized observations muscle function (mainly based on those proposed by Dr. Brooke), a new self-administered questionnaire regarding Activities Daily Living (ADL) ADL staircase (based Katz index). The results different disability highly correlated. Sickness Impact Profile Kaasa test used for assessing quality life, no...
All cases of ALS in Sweden during the period 1970-1983, i.e., 1961 cases, were compared with an age-stratified random sample 2245 individuals from Swedish population. On basis census information, male found to be heterogeneously distributed over occupational groups. Significantly more than expected among office workers (OR = 1.8; 34 cases) as well farm 1.7;56 cases). There was a cluster agricultural work one south-western county 3.4;25 female medical service 1.7; 33
The development of atelectasis and effects on gas exchange during enflurane anaesthesia in nitrogen/oxygen or nitrous oxide/oxygen (inspired oxygen fraction 0.4) were studied 16 lung‐healthy patients (mean age 49 years). Awake, no subject displayed as assessed by computed x‐ray tomography the thorax. Pulmonary exchange, multiple inert elimination technique, blood gases normal. After 10 min nitrogen/oxygen, 14 subjects had developed atelectasis. 30 oxide/oxygen, all atelectasis, a further...
To follow-up lung function and airway symptoms in workers exposed to cobalt dust at a hard metal plant.A total of 582 employees underwent spirometry completed questionnaire. A historical exposure matrix was created, assigning figures for recent work-related exposure. At the time employment, 5% reported from respiratory tract. At follow-up, suffered persistent coughing 7% asthma; 20% were daily smokers. Among nonsmokers without asthma, an evident, statistically nonsignificant, dose-response...
AbstractPurpose : The present study investigates progressive muscular dystrophy over a five year period. purpose is twofold: to describe changes time and investigate relations between disability, coping quality of life. Method group comprised 45 adults (16 men 29 women), with an average age 44 years. All were assessed in 1991 1996, the following instruments: ADL staircase, Self-report ADL, Mental Adjustment Cancer scale, Sickness Impact Profile Psychosocial well-being questionnaire (Kaasa)....
89 cases of motor neuron disease (MND) were identified in Värmland County during the period 1970–1981. This amounts to an annual incidence rate 2.6 per 100,000 population, sex- and age-adjusted USA 1.7. The average point prevalence was 8.5 population median duration MND 25 months. 95% coded on their death certificates. overrepresentated persons performing heavy manual labor. A significantly higher mortality found compared all Sweden (p < 0.01). One explanation for this can be that more...
The study group consisted of 100 persons referred with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome. Clinical and neurophysiological examinations were performed blinded from each other. gold standard for the syndrome (CTS) diagnosis was based on results these but relief CTS symptoms after surgery also required. sensitivity specificity combined clinical 94% 80% respectively, examinations, 85% 87%. Of methods used, quotient sensory nerve conduction velocity between palm to wrist elbow best cut-off this...
ABSTRACT All 49 members of four generations a family were identified. In the first three eight afflicted with dementia, whereas in fourth generation only one was demented but motor neuron disease and they also had slight cognitive deficiencies. The pattern heredity is compatible dominant autosomal inheritance. Neuropsychological testing revealed affection mostly frontal lobes. A pedigree six case reports are presented.
The age-standardized mortality from motor neuron disease in Sweden doubled 1961 to 1985. average annual rate during the period was 1.9 per 100,000 population. male female ratio 1.2:1. age-specific rates had a peak at 70 79 years of age. When each birth cohort followed up separately over time, less clear and some cohorts increased continuously with advancing A significant increase among men found one Swedish county.
Recent studies of mortality from motor neurone disease (MND) in Sweden have demonstrated rising levels the disease, especially amongst older age groups. Case-control investigations suggested that certain environmental factors are significantly related to variations and associated with a probable individual susceptibility MND. This study applies an innovative epidemiological technique longitudinal cohort analysis Swedish MND during period 1961 1990. Survival modelling shows subpopulation...
Abstract Background: Symptoms of lumbar disc herniation can be induced by both mechanical compression the nerve roots and biochemical irritants from tissues. Proinflammatory cytokines, as well stress are potent stimulators hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, reflected in enhanced release cortisol adrenal cortex. Altered production is also associated to behaviour coping patterns. The aim present study was explore relation between pain, physical function, psychosocial factors quality life...
Purpose: To quantitatively evaluate the effects of qigong in patients with muscular dystrophy. Methods: Thirty-six dystrophy were assigned to either a treatment or comparison group, by means stratified randomization procedure. The intervention period lasted for 3 months. Balance and respiratory function assessed Berg's Scale an electronic spirometer, respectively. Health-related quality life was tested Swedish version Medical Outcome Study Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), coping levels Ways...
