We detected and measured coseismic displacement caused by the 11 March 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake [moment magnitude (M(W)) 9.0] using multibeam bathymetric surveys. The difference between data acquired before after revealed that extended out to axis of Japan Trench, suggesting fault rupture reached trench axis. sea floor on outermost landward area moved about 50 meters horizontally east-southeast ~10 upward. large horizontal lifted up 16 slope in addition vertical displacement.
Abstract During the 2011 magnitude 9 Tohoku-oki earthquake, very large slip occurred on shallowest part of subduction megathrust. Quantitative information shallow is critical importance to distinguishing between different rupture mechanics and understanding generation ensuing devastating tsunami. However, distribution are essentially unknown due primarily lack near-trench constraints, as demonstrated by a compilation 45 models derived from range data sets. To quantify slip, here we model...

Numerous observations pertaining to the magnitude 9.0 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (offshore Japan) have led new understanding of subduction zone earthquakes. By synthesizing published research results and our own findings, we explore what has been learned about fault behavior Earth rheology from observation modeling crustal deformation before, during, after earthquake. Before earthquake, megathrust locking models based on land-based geodetic correctly outlined along-strike location future...
The Mid‐Atlantic Ridge around the Fifteen‐Twenty Fracture Zone is unique in that outcrops of lower crust and mantle rocks are extensive on both flanks axial valley walls over an unusually long distance along‐axis, indicating a high ratio tectonic to magmatic extension. On basis newly collected multibeam bathymetry, magnetic, gravity data, we investigate crustal evolution this section last 5 Ma. northern southern edges study area, away from fracture zone, contain abyssal hills with small...
The inability to repair DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) leads radiosensitization, such that ionizing radiation combined with molecular inhibition of cellular DSB processing may greatly affect treatment human cancer. As a variety viral products interact the machinery, oncolytic virotherapy improve therapeutic window conventional radiotherapy. Here, we describe mechanistic basis for synergy irradiation and OBP-301 (Telomelysin), an attenuated type-5 adenovirus potency contains telomerase...
<title>Abstract</title> An increase in seismic activity was observed near the Izu-Torishima and Sofugan islands Izu-Ogasawara arc of Japan early October 2023. Several M6-class earthquakes occurred from 3 to 6, tsunamis were recorded on 5 associated with normal faulting earthquakes. On 8, without any significant but accompanied by distinct T-phase signals. Analyses T-phases, tsunami waveforms, bathymetry surveys suggested that 8 linked volcanic at Sofu Seamount, located west Island. However,...
Segmentectomy for lung cancer has been increasingly performed. However, evidence regarding the necessity of additional surgical resection following diagnosis unsuspected N1/N2 lymph node metastasis is limited. We conducted a multicenter real-world data study patients with clinically any T and N0 non-small cell (NSCLC) who underwent lobectomy or segmentectomy between 2012 2021 were subsequently diagnosed pathological metastasis. Patients categorized into groups. analyzed overall survival...
Abstract Oncolytic adenoviruses are being developed as novel anticancer therapeutics and currently undergoing clinical trials. We previously demonstrated that telomerase‐specific replication‐competent adenovirus (Telomelysin: OBP‐301), in which the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) promoter regulates viral replication, efficiently killed tumor cells. further constructed OBP‐401 (Telomelysin‐GFP) expresses green fluorescent protein ( GFP ) reporter gene under control of...
ABSTRACT On the western part of Pacific Plate most seamounts formed during Cretaceous period in so‐called West Seamount Province (WPSP). northwestern same plate, Joban and Japanese Trail (JJST) are also composed Early seamounts. However, two new groups knolls were recently discovered multibeam surveys on along Japan Trench. One group consists circular that flat‐topped shape correspond to eruptive ages approximately 75 Ma. The other irregularly shaped knolls, called petit‐spot volcanoes,...
Abstract We conducted multibeam bathymetric surveys crossing the northern Japan Trench offshore Sanriku and examined seafloor displacement by means of difference in bathymetry before after 11 March 2011 Tohoku‐oki earthquake. The displacements were less than several meters vertical 20 m trench‐normal horizontal displacement; consequently, lower amplitude evaluated. Comparatively, landward slope near trench was uplifted, middle subsided, midslope terrace depressed Therefore, localized very...
The straightforward but unexpected relationship presented here relates crustal thickness to magma type in the Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) and Aleutian oceanic arcs. Volcanoes along southern segment of arc western (west Adak) are underlain by thin crust (10-20 km). In contrast those northern eastern ~35 km thick. Interestingly, andesite magmas dominate eruptive products from former volcanoes mostly basaltic lavas erupt latter. According hypothesis here, rising mantle diapirs stall near base at...
The strong ground motions, large crustal deformation, and tsunami generated by the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake ( M w 9.1) reveal that a coseismic slip likely propagated to shallow depth in Japan Trench. Although data acquired onshore networks cannot resolve behavior of updip fault rupture, marine geophysical geological studies provide direct evidence trench. Differential bathymetry show ∼50 m seafloor displacement extending central Trench (38–39.2°N). Seismic ruptured within Pelagic clays may...
Abstract On 8 October 2023 (UTC), unique earthquakes occurred in the Izu‐Ogasawara Arc, Japan, which P‐ and S‐phases were barely visible only T‐phases evident, followed by tsunamis that reached islands Arc a wide area of Pacific coast southwest Japan. Our estimated T‐phase source coincides with Sofu Seamount, was previously unrecognized as an active submarine volcano. A bathymetric survey seamount conducted 1 month after event revealed characteristics caldera central cone. Compared to...
A seismic reflection survey was conducted in the northwestern Pacific to investigate subsurface structure of small volcanoes considered be formed by newly‐discovered “petit‐spot” intra‐plate volcanism. In contrast with an acoustically transparent sedimentary layer ambient Pacific, layers are opaque interbedded strong reflections beneath volcanoes. These possibly caused inhomogeneous due intrusion central vent. Subhorizontal at base layer, identified vicinity volcanoes, probably from sills...
The Ayu Trough lies on the southern boundary between Philippine Sea Plate and Caroline Plate. Although this trough may be best place to study evolution kinematics of Plate, origin are poorly understood. Our geophysical morphological surveys in northern part revealed that shares similarities with slow‐spreading mid‐ocean ridges. seafloor ages an average spreading rate were inferred from length ridge segments, distribution sediment thickness, basement subsidence. Based seismic section at...
