We presented our surveillance results on imported dengue cases in Taiwan during 2003–2007. A total of 542 patients were identified. The travelers infected 17 countries Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, East African islands, South Pacific and Central America. Most these Asian countries. Phylogenetic analyses conducted to examine 288 virus (DENV) strains introduced from 13 provide an updated view geographic distribution dynamic transmission epidemic DENV stains circulated Although...

Abstract Airport fever screening in Taiwan, July 2003–June 2004, identified 40 confirmed dengue cases. Results obtained by capture immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG enzyme-linked immunoassay, real time 1-step polymerase chain reaction, virus isolation showed that 33 (82.5%) of patients were viremic. can thus quickly identify imported

Coumarin derivatives are used as fluorescent dyes and medicines. They also have some notable physiological effects, including the acute hepatoxicity carcinogenicity of certain aflatoxins, anticoagulant action dicoumarol, antibiotic activity novobicin coumerymycin A1. Because number drug resistant strains is increasing at present, synthesis new antibacterial compounds one critical methods for treating infectious diseases. Therefore, a series coumarin-substituted derivatives, namely 4-hydroxy-...

Emerging risk factors for tuberculosis (TB) infection, such as air pollution, play a significant role at both the individual and population levels. However, association between pollution TB remains unclear. The objective of this study was to examine outdoor sputum culture conversion in patients. In present study, 389 subjects were recruited from hospital Taiwan 2010 2012: 144 controls with non-TB-related pulmonary diseases negative cultures 245 culture-positive subjects. We observed that 1...

Smoking has been associated with tuberculosis (TB); however, the effects of smoking on effectiveness TB treatment remain unclear.Data were retrieved from case notes and interviews subjects registered in TB-reporting system 2010 to 2012. Study cases defined as TB-positive sputum cultures, whereas controls non-TB-related pulmonary diseases. Statistical analyses included logistic regression multivariate Cox proportional hazard models.A total 245 cultures positive for 114 diseases negative...

Lymphocytic pleurisy is commonly observed in tuberculosis and cancer. Noninvasive biomarkers are needed to distinguish tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) from malignant (MPE) because current clinical diagnostic procedures often invasive. We identified immune response that can discriminate between TPE MPE. Fourteen were compared 22 MPE patients five patients. Of the innate immunity biomarkers, median levels of interleukin (IL)-1β interferon-induced protein-10 (IP-10) higher than (P<0.05...

A novel species of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsia, Rickettsia spp. IG-1, was identified and isolated from adult Ixodes granulatus ticks collected Orchid Island (Lanyu), an islet located in southeastern Taiwan. Serum samples the rodent host Rattus losea SFG-positive human serum reacted with IG-1 using immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Pairwise nucleotide sequence analysis 16S rRNA (rrs), gltA, ompA, ompB, sca4 shows that belongs to SFG rickettsiae had highest similarities slovaca R....

We present the results of a laboratory-based surveillance dengue in Taiwan 2014. A total 240 imported cases were identified. The patients had arrived from 16 countries, and Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, China most frequent importing countries. Phylogenetic analyses showed that genotype I virus type 1 (DENV-1) cosmopolitan DENV-2 predominant DENV strains circulating southeast Asia. 2014 epidemic was largest ever to occur since World War II, there 15,492 laboratory-confirmed indigenous...

We identified 78 imported chikungunya cases in Taiwan during 2006-2014. Sixty-six (84.6%) were initially suspected to be dengue, which indicates the necessity for laboratory diagnostics differentiation between dengue and chikungunya. Results also emphasize need active surveillance of febrile illness at points entry.

Diving acclimatization refers to a reduced susceptibility acute decompression sickness (DCS) in individuals undergoing repeated compression-decompression cycles. We demonstrated previous study that the mechanism responsible for this is similar of stress preconditioning. In study, we investigated protective effect prior DCS preconditioning on severity neurological subsequent exposure high pressure rabbits. exposed rabbits (n = 10) cycle 6 absolute atmospheres (ATA) 90 min, which induced signs...
