Objective. Describe the epidemiology of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) participating a standardized and mandatory CLABSI surveillance program. Design. Retrospective cohort. Setting. We included patients admitted (April 2007-March 2011) to 7 level II/III NICUs who developed (as defined by National Healthcare Safety Network). Methods . CLABSIs/1,000 line–days device utilization ratio were calculated; x 2 test, Student t...
A case of scurvy in a 10-year-old boy with autism spectrum disorder is described. His clinical presentation was initially thought to be due osteomyelitis, for which empirical antimicrobial therapy initiated. Further invasive and ultimately unnecessary investigations were avoided when considered the context restricted diet classic signs vitamin C deficiency. Infectious diseases specialists should aware as an important mimicker osteoarticular infections involved care patients at risk...
We previously identified Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates with characteristics typical of chronic infection in some early infections children cystic fibrosis (CF), suggesting that these may have been acquired from other patients. Our objective was to define the extent P. strain-sharing CF and its impact on antibiotic eradication treatment failure rates. We performed whole genome sequencing pediatric pulmonary following comparator groups same hospital: infection, sink drains, sterile site...
ABSTRACT Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have become the leading cause of bloodstream infections (BSIs) in intensive care units (ICUs), particularly premature neonates. Vancomycin-intermediate heteroresistant CoNS (hVICoNS) been identified as sources BSIs worldwide, and their potential to emerge significant pathogens neonatal ICU (NICU) remains uncertain. This study describes molecular epidemiology an outbreak vancomycin-heteroresistant (hV) Staphylococcus epidermidis...

Background:
SARS-CoV-2 transmission has an impact on education. In this study, we assessed the performance of rapid antigen detection tests (RADTs) versus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosis infection in school settings, and RADT use monitoring exposed contacts.
Methods:
real-world, prospective observational cohort high-school students staff were recruited from 2 high schools Montréal, Canada, followed Jan. 25 to June 10, 2021. Twenty-five percent asymptomatic...
This report describes transmission of a Burkholderia cenocepacia ET12 strain (ET12-Bc) at the Toronto Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Centre occurring from 2008 to 2017. Epidemiological and genomic data 11 patients with CF were evaluated. Isolates analysed using whole genome sequencing (WGS). investigation WGS analysis suggested nosocomial transmission, despite enhanced infection control precautions. was associated subsequent deaths in 10 patients. ET12-Bc positive are no longer cared for on same...
Heterogeneously resistant vancomycin-intermediate coagulase-negative staphylococci (hVICoNS) are emerging pathogens causing central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients. Given the burden of disease associated with CLABSI and current lack therapeutic guidelines, we aimed to compare effectiveness linezolid versus vancomycin used as definitive antibiotic therapy for hVICoNS CLABSI.We performed a retrospective cohort study infants from...
Syphilis is an infection caused by Treponema pallidum spirochetes. The diagnosis of this sexually transmitted disease may be missed, partly due to the painless nature genital ulcers in its primary stage. Women Canada are screened for syphilis their first trimester pregnancy, but late pregnancy testing not done all provinces date; therefore, undetected vertical transmission occur. This case emphasizes importance recognizing congenital infants and young children with unexplained growth...

Abstract Background Transmission of Burkholderia cenocepacia ET-12 strain (ET-12Bc) can cause epidemics in the cystic fibrosis (CF) population. The Toronto Adult CF center currently follows 500 patients; 20% have infection with B. cepacia complex (BCC), including 48 patients infected ET-12Bc. adheres to 2013 prevention and control guidelines are also segregated by clinics. Despite this, there been 11 new acquisitions ET-12Bc since 2008. objective this study was describe investigation an...
In a tertiary-care, pediatric healthcare center in Québec, Canada, workers who reported household exposure to confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases were allowed work. On repeated testing, 15% became severe acute respiratory virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-positive by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), with no nosocomial transmission. Being asymptomatic and receiving booster dose >7 days prior was protective against becoming SARS-CoV-2-positive PCR.
Introduction: The epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) in hospitalized children low endemicity settings is not well known. We aim to describe it a large tertiary paediatric health care centre Canada. Methods: A repeated point-prevalence study including all inpatients was conducted at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, surveillance purposes over 3 days serially April 2017, 2019, and 2022. Patients emergency department medical day units were excluded. Stools or...
Abstract Background We evaluated the use of rapid antigen detection tests (RADT) for diagnosis severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in school settings to determine RADT’s performance compared PCR. Methods In this real-world, prospective observational cohort study, high-school students and staff were recruited from two high-schools Montreal (Canada) followed January 25 th June 10 , 2021. Twenty-five percent asymptomatic participants tested weekly by RADT...

Introduction
Adolescents with learning difficulties are at risk of leaving school without a qualifying certification. They may experience in entering the labour market. In Quebec (Canada), Work-Oriented Training Path (WOTP) enables these young people to develop their employability by offering pre-work traineeships actual companies. The aim this pilot study was an innovative intervention based on using technological aids help students enrolled WOTP programs developing work...
