Abstract Helicobacter pylori is a major etiological agent in gastroduodenal disorders. In this study, we isolated 36 polyphenols and 4 terpenoids from medicinal plants, investigated their antibacterial activity against H. vitro . All hydrolyzable tannins tested demonstrated promising Monomeric revealed especially strong activity. Other compounds minimal with few exceptions. A monomeric tannin, Tellimagrandin I time‐ dose‐dependent bactericidal On the other hand, did not affect viability of...

The antioxidant polyphenols in cacao liquor, a major ingredient of chocolate and cocoa, have been characterized as flavan-3-ols proanthocyanidin oligomers. In this study, various products were analyzed by normal-phase HPLC, the profiles quantities present, grouped molecular size (monomers~oligomers), compared. Individual polyphenols, (catechin epicatechin), dimeric (procyanidin B2), trimeric C1), tetrameric (cinnamtannin A2) proanthocyanidins, galactopyranosyl-ent-(-)-epicatechin (2α→7,...

A novel thermophilic, chemoheterotrophic, Gram-negative-staining, multicellular filamentous bacterium, designated strain 110S T , was isolated from an iron-rich coastal hydrothermal field in Japan. The isolate is facultatively aerobic and chemoheterotrophic. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences nested a class-level clone cluster of the phylum ‘ Chloroflexi ’. grows by dissimilatory iron- nitrate-reduction under anaerobic conditions, which first report these abilities organism...

Metagenomics has revealed the existence of numerous uncharacterized viral lineages, which are referred to as "dark matter." However, our knowledge regarding genomes is biased toward culturable viruses. In this study, we analyzed 1,600 (1,352 nonredundant) complete double-stranded DNA (10 211 kb) assembled from 52 marine viromes. Together with 244 previously reported uncultured genomes, a genome-wide comparison delineated 617 genus-level operational taxonomic units (OTUs) for these...

ABSTRACT We isolated a cyanophage (Ma-LMM01) that specifically infects toxic strain of the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa . Transmission electron microscopy showed virion is composed anisometric head and tail complex consisting central tube contractile sheath with helical symmetry. The morphological features host specificity suggest Ma-LMM01 member cyanomyovirus group. Using semi-one-step growth experiments, latent period burst size were estimated to be 6 12 h 50 120...

ABSTRACT Cyanobacteria and their phages are significant microbial components of the freshwater marine environments. We identified a lytic phage, Ma-LMM01, infecting Microcystis aeruginosa , cyanobacterium that forms toxic blooms on surfaces lakes. Here, we describe first sequenced cyanomyovirus genome Ma-LMM01. The linear, circularly permuted, terminally redundant has 162,109 bp contains 184 predicted protein-coding genes two tRNA genes. exhibits no colinearity with previously genomes...

The abundance of potentially Microcystis aeruginosa-infectious cyanophages in freshwater was studied using g91 real-time PCR. A clear increase cyanophage observed when M. aeruginosa numbers declined, showing that these factors were significantly negatively correlated. Furthermore, our data suggested dynamics may also affect shifts microcystin-producing and non-microcystin-producing populations.
