Leader process in a positive single‐stroke cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash was captured by high‐speed video camera with time resolution of 1000 frames/s. The leader and the intracloud discharge before return stroke, which lasted about 600 ms, are studied detail combining data from fast slow antenna. channel branches seemed to develop horizontally speed order 10 4 m/s during initial stage just outside thundercloud. luminous duration 12 intensity at tip much stronger than behind it, presented...
The propagation features of stepped leader with four grounded branches during a negative CG flash have been analyzed by using the data from high‐speed digital camera 1 ms time resolution in correlation wide‐band electric field change signatures. Four that initiated main trunk connected to ground sequence and induced separate return strokes. speed shows an increase tendency when they progressed downward ground. average 2‐D was estimated be about 1.1 × 10 5 m/s. changes caused were...
Abstract Using lightning data from the World‐Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) and tracking for Tropical Cyclones (TCs) China Meteorological Administration (CMA), relationship between peak time lag ( T ) wind intensity change in severe super typhoons was investigated. The maximum peaks of inner‐core TC ranged −132 to 198 h, while that entire −174 h. median values strengthening weakening storms were 54 −21 respectively, those TCs 59 −64 respectively. Frequency Peaks (LFPs) occurred more...
To evaluate and clarify the daily precipitation characteristics (i.e. amount, frequency intensity) of regional climate models (RCMs) in China, long-term simulations were carried out using RegCM4.5 Weather Research Forecasting model (WRF), which nested within European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts (ECMWF)’s 20 th century reanalysis (ERA-20C) between 1901 2010. The 2 RCMs initially run at a resolution 50 km. Analyses mainly compared model-simulated climatic means interannual variations...
The negative cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes that struck the ground with multiple contacts have been analyzed based on a high-speed video camera system (1000 frames s-1) in correlation fast and slow antenna systems. Two cases divided. In one case, CG more than termination millisecond-scale. This kind of stroke, named as multiple-ground stroke (MGTS). other case was lightning different terminations normal return process, channel flash (MCF). percentage MGTS occupied about 15% (9 out 59) total...
Shandong artificially triggering lightning experiment (SHATLE) has been continuously conducted since the summer of 2005 in Binzhou, Shandong. Eight negative flashes including 32 return strokes were successfully triggered from to 2007. The discharge current and close electromagnetic fields at 50 (m) 550 distances documented simultaneously. whole process lasted 518 (ms) 1900 (ms). range peak value for 14 recorded 3 was varying 5.8 kA 45.7 (kA) with an average 18.6 (kA), similar subsequent...
Using the real-time and continuous lightning location data from World Wide Lightning Network (WWLLN) other data, such as basic information about typhoon related satellite China Meteorological Administration (CMA) to study distribution variation of activity in Morakot. The outer rain band appeared most lightning. In period tropical storm (TS) strong (STS), cyclone (TC) structure changed developed fast, a lot occurred area with TBB below 210 K. typhoon, we observed there was better...
During the summers of 2012 and 2013, field observations lightning processes were conducted to investigate characteristics discharges over a Chinese inland plateau. A total 17 cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes recorded by high-speed video camera in 7 thunderstorm systems. Seven CG had two or more contacts: 6 multiple-channel (MCFs) 1 was flash with multiple-ground-termination-stroke (MGTS). The percentage multiple contacts approximately 41% Pingliang. highest number termination MCFs three. average...
Based on the images from high-speed video camera systems, statistics of CG flashes was made in five different regions China. During 11 years, 103 were captured. 35.9 % out them had one stroke. The 21.4 and 13.6 two three return strokes, respectively. average stroke per 3.38. number strokes positive 1.12, while negative 3.48. 70.8 only strike point. 27.2 have more than points most is four. point 1.38. time intervals between successive a flash ranged 2 to 520 ms.
