We have collated the most complete database of microorganisms identified as being capable degrading plastics to date. These data allow us explore phylogenetic distribution these organisms and their enzymes, showing that traits for plastic degradation are predominantly not phylogenetically conserved.
Abstract The number of publications reporting putative plastic-degrading microbes and proteins is continuously increasing, necessitating the compilation these data development tools to facilitate their analysis. We developed PlasticDB web application address this need, which comprises a database microorganisms reported biodegrade plastics. Associated metadata, such as techniques utilized assess biodegradation, environmental source microbial isolate presumed thermophilic traits are also...
The ubiquity of plastic debris in marine environments raises the question, what impacts do plastics have on our microbiota? To investigate this, we applied bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS2 region sequencing to identify changes microbial biofilm community compositions plastic, over time. We sampled virgin linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), nylon-6 (PA) glass after 2, 6 12 weeks constant immersion Te Whakaraupō-Lyttelton Harbour, Aotearoa-New Zealand. Of prokaryotes,...
Abstract Internationally, the environmental damage caused by improper disposal of approximately 100 Mt plastic waste per annum is growing concern. Attempts to address this issue have generated many hundreds scientific studies announcing discovery novel plastic-degrading microorganisms and their respective enzymes. On closer inspection, however, evidence remains sparse for microbial degradation most polymers produced globally. We systematically surveyed international literature confirm how...
Microbial degradation provides an avenue for the remediation of select plastic polymers contributing to urgent environmental problem global pollution. We demonstrate polycaprolactone (PCL) by Clonostachys rosea and elucidate its underlying molecular mechanisms. constructed genome this fungal strain monitored changes in gene expression when exposed PCL. Twelve genes linked PCL were found C. rosea, some them upregulated presence plastic, including coding two cutinases. heterologously expressed...
Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are a distinct population of lymphocytes characterized by their reactivity to glycolipids presented CD1d. iNKT found throughout the body, and little is known about tissue-specific metabolic regulation. Here, we show that splenic hepatic metabolically comparable rely on glycolytic metabolism support activation. Deletion pyruvate kinase M2 (Pkm2) gene in impairs response specific stimulation ability mitigate acute liver injury. In contrast, adipose...
Impacts of Marine Plastic Debris (MPD) on marine ecosystems are among the most critical environmental concerns past three decades. Virgin plastic is often cheaper to manufacture than recycled plastics, increasing rates released into environment and thereby impacting ecosystem health functioning. Along with other effects, MPD can serve as a vector for hitchhikers, facilitating unwanted organisms’ transport subsequent spread. Consequently, there growing demand more eco-friendly replacements...
Abstract Background Plastic pollution is a severe threat to marine ecosystems. While some microbial enzymes can degrade certain plastics, the ability of global ocean microbiome break down diverse environmental plastics remains limited. We employed metatranscriptomic data from an international survey explore and regional patterns in plastic degradation potential. Results On oceanic scale, we found no significant correlation between levels expression genes encoding putatively identified as...
Abstract Background The gut microbiota is a key element to support host homeostasis and the development of immune system. relationship between immunity 2-way road, in which contributes development/function cells can affect composition microbes. In this context, natural killer T (NKT cells) are distinct lymphocytes that play role influenced by our work, we investigated involvement invariant NKT (iNKT) intestinal homeostasis. Results We found iNKT-deficient mice (iNKT-KO) had reduced levels...
