Air pollution introduces a major challenge for societies, where it leads to the premature deaths of millions people each year globally. Massive deployment air quality sensing devices and data analysis resultant will pave way development real-time intelligent applications services, e.g., minimization exposure poor either on an individual or city scale. 5G edge computing supports dense deployments sensors at high resolution with ubiquitous connectivity, bandwidth, high-speed gigabit...
Mobile Augmented Reality (AR) is gaining traction as a compelling application due to recent advancements in hardware and software. Previous studies have suggested that distributing AR services on an edge computing infrastructure can offer significant performance benefits, especially for consolidating concurrent clients. In this study, we shed light several research challenges directly impacting the effective integration of distributed computing. Specifically, conduct extensive experiments by...
This article contributes a research vision for using edge computing to deliver the infrastructure emerging smart megacities, with use cases, key requirements, and reflections on state of art. We also address server placements, challenge adoption.
Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) provides a unique experience where the physical world is augmented with virtual annotations. MAR involves computation-heavy algorithms that could potentially be offloaded to edge servers on 5G networks, which significantly enhances reduced communication latency and more stable network connections, therefore leading seamless user experiences. In this demo, we show running system deployed test bed present results.
Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) mixes physical environments with user-interactive virtual annotations. Immersive MAR experiences are supported by computation-intensive tasks, which typically offloaded to cloud or edge servers. Such offloading introduces additional network traffic and influences the motion-to-photon latency (a determinant of user-perceived quality experience). Therefore, proper multimedia protocols crucial minimise transmission ensure sufficient throughput support performance....
Augmented Reality (AR) provides immersive user experiences by overlaying digital information on physical environments. Context-awareness is crucial for delivering relevant augmentations that best suit users' requirements and their en-vironments. In this article, we combine context-aware reasoning with emerging AR applications to provide the most infor-mation according environment contexts. To support possible quality of experience, 5G edge computing enables distribution computation-intensive...
Physical world enhancements through virtually drawn annotations on mobile devices are a core component of augmented reality (MAR) experiences. However, resource intensive computer vision tasks typically limit the full deployment MAR pipelines on-device due to lack required computation resources. As an alternative, distributed scheme between client and edge servers enables offloading powerful machines. This introduces challenges, such as maintaining low communication latency high bandwidth...
Web-based extended reality (WebXR) can enable lightweight, easy-to-access, and cross-platform augmented (AR) experiences. Context awareness is one key feature of AR. Supporting this in browser-based WebXR applications challenging as typical object detection algorithms are too computationally demanding to be run in-browser, leading slow response times decreased battery life. In demo, we show a AR application that uses technique WebRTC-based video streaming obtain usable stream on an edge...
Water covers most of the Earth's surface and is nowhere near a good ecological or recreational state in many areas world. Moreover, only small fraction water potable. As climate change-induced extreme weather events become ever more prevalent, issues arise, such as worsening quality problems. Therefore, protecting invaluable usable drinking critical. Environmental agencies must continuously check sources to determine whether they are healthy regarding pollutant levels status. The currently...
Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) mixes physical environments with user-interactive virtual annotations. Immersive MAR experiences are supported by computation-intensive tasks which rely on offloading mechanisms to ease device workloads. However, this introduces additional network traffic in turn influences the motion-to-photon latency (a determinant of user-perceived quality experience). Therefore, a proper transport protocol is crucial minimise transmission and ensure sufficient throughput...
Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) applications enable users to interact with physical environments through overlaying digital information on top of camera views. Detecting and classifying complex objects in the real world presents a critical challenge immersive user experiences MAR applications. Aiming provide continuous experiences, we address key object recognition, which requires accommodating an increasing number recognition requests different types images systems possible new emerging...
In a postpandemic world, remaining vigilant and maintaining social distancing are still crucial so societies can contain the virus public avoid disproportionate health impacts. Augmented reality (AR) visually assist users in understanding distances distancing. However, integrating external sensing analysis is required for beyond users' local environment. We present DistAR, an android-based application leveraging AR smart using on-device of optical images environment crowdedness from campus...
Mobile augmented reality (MAR) achieves immersive real-time experiences by offloading computation-intensive computer vision tasks. 5G NR (5G) networks and edge computing enable optimised latency enhanced throughput for MAR offloading. However, efficiently leveraging the also requires optimising data link between devices server machines. We report preliminary experiments of transport protocols (i.e., UDP TCP) to understand how we could further modify clients servers. Preliminary analysis...
