Abstract Most patients treated for single or multiple brain metastases die from progression of extracranial tumor activity. This makes it uncertain whether the combination neurosurgery and radiontherapy treatment metastasis will lead to better results than less invasive with radiotherapy alone. The effect neurosurgical excision plus was compared alone in a prospectively randomized trial 63 evaluable systemic cancer radiological diagnosis metastasis. Radiotherapy given whole by novel scheme 2...

Patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (also known as the complex regional pain syndrome) may have dystonia, which is often unresponsive to treatment. Some forms of dystonia respond intrathecal administration baclofen, a specific gamma-aminobutyric acid-receptor (type B) agonist that inhibits sensory input neurons spinal cord. We evaluated this treatment in seven women who had multifocal or generalized tonic dystonia. First, we performed double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover...

Transsphenoidal surgery is the treatment of choice for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas (NFMA). In this study we evaluated long-term effects a strategy in which postoperative radiotherapy was not routinely applied to patients with NFMA.This retrospective follow-up study. We included 109 consecutive (age 56 +/- 13 yr) operated NFMA between 1992 and 2004.Radiological imaging revealed macroadenoma all patients, suprasellar extension 96% parasellar/infrasellar 36% cases. Object Routine microbiological and chemical analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is often performed to diagnose external drainage–related bacterial meningitis (ED-BM) at an early stage. A cohort study was investigate the value several commonly used CSF parameters for prediction diagnosis ED-BM. Methods In a 230 consecutive patients in whom drains had been placed, samples were collected daily, prospectively evaluated presence bacteria using Gram stain culture, analyzed leukocyte count,...

Object. In the present study authors compared incidence and risk factors for external drainage—related bacterial meningitis (ED-BM) by using ventricular lumbar catheters. Methods. A cohort of 230 consecutive patients with ED was evaluated. Cerebrospinal fluid samples were obtained daily microbiological culture, ED-BM defined based on culture results in combination clinical symptoms. The 7% 15% drains. Independent included site leakage, drain blockage, most importantly duration ED. Despite a...

Dystonia in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) responds poorly to treatment. Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) may improve this type of dystonia, but information on its efficacy and safety is limited. A single-blind, placebo-run-in, dose-escalation study was carried out 42 CRPS patients evaluate whether dystonia ITB. Thirty-six the 38 patients, who met responder criteria received a pump for continuous ITB administration, were followed up 12 months assess long-term (open-label study). Primary...

Abstract The development and application of a procedure for interphase cytogenetics on brain tumor material is described. Nuclei isolated from freshly removed tissue were investigated chromosomal aberrations by nonradioactive in situ hybridization with panel chromosome‐specific probes. consisted nine satellite DMA probes specific the centromeric regions chromosomes 1, 6, 7, 10, 11, 17, 18, X, Y. For each probe, number signals per cell was determined 200 nuclei. It inferred results that 11...

✓ Interphase cytogenetics is the application of nonradioactive in situ hybridization with chromosome-specific DNA probes to interphase nuclei. In this study, was used investigate 66 primary brain tumors (33 gliomas, 30 meningiomas, and three medulloblastomas) for numerical chromosomal aberrations chromosomes 1, 6, 7, 10, 11, 17, 18, X, Y. Of 33 gliomas (17 astrocytomas grades II, III, IV, five oligoastrocytomas, seven oligodendrogliomas, four ependymal tumors), 22 were near diploid, while...

A common cause of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is compression the root fifth cranial nerve by a tortuous basilar artery or one its branches. Microvascular decompression surgery has proved valuable in relieving symptoms these patients with compression. We performed vertebral angiography on 22 TN. The angiographic appearances were compared findings obtained from an anatomic study which positions 20 nerves skull determined radiographically 12 cadavers. We describe a patient with glioblastoma multiforme excessive granulocytosis in the peripheral blood. Shown at both protein and mRNA levels, tumor produced very high levels of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). G-CSF is growth that induces recruitment granulocytes. The paraneoplastic phenomenon described here partly mimicked brain abscess. Production by (brain) cells might be related to common malignant disease.
