Monitoring networks show that the European Union Nitrates Directive (ND) has had mixed success in reducing nitrate concentrations groundwater. By combining machine learning and monitored (1992–2019), we estimate total area of hotspots Europe to be 401,000 km2, with 47% occurring outside Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs). We also found contrasting increasing or decreasing trends, varying per country time periods. only 5% 122,000 km2 2019 will meet quality standards by 2040 these may offset...

Irrigation, one of the 28 agri-environmental indicators defined in European Common Agricultural Policy, is often neglected agricultural nitrogen (N) budgets, while it can be a considerable source N irrigated agriculture. The annual input from irrigation water sources (NIrrig) to cropping systems was quantified for Europe 2000-2010 at resolution 10 × km, accounting crop-specific gross requirements (GIR) and surface- groundwater nitrate concentration. GIR were computed 20 crops, spatially...

Abstract. Three different nitrogen (N) fertiliser types, ammonium nitrate, urea and coated with a urease inhibitor (Agrotain®), were applied at standard rates (70 kg N ha−1) to experimental plots in typical intensively managed grassland area the Easter Bush Farm Estate (Scotland). The use efficiency of fertilisers was investigated as well losses form nitrous oxide fluxes (N2O) ammonia (NH3) during fertilisation events 2016 2017 growing seasons. Nitrous measured by static chamber technique...

Trapezoidal integration by linear interpolation of data points is far the most commonly used method cumulative flux calculations nitrous oxide (N2O) in studies that use chambers; however, this incapable providing accurate uncertainty estimates. A Bayesian approach was to calculate N2O emission factors (EFs) and their associated uncertainties from chamber measurements made after application nitrogen fertilisers, form ammonium nitrate (AN), urea (Ur) treated with Agrotain® urease inhibitor...
