LOPES is a digital radio interferometer located at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, that measures emission from extensive air showers MHz frequencies in coincidence with KASCADE-Grande. In this article, we explore method (slope method) leverages the slope measured lateral distribution to reconstruct crucial attributes primary cosmic rays. First, present an investigation on basis pure simulations. Second, directly apply measurements. Applying simulations, obtain uncertainties...
Analyzing measurements of the LOPES antenna array together with corresponding CoREAS simulations for more than 300 measured events energy above 1017 eV and zenith angles smaller 45o, we find that radio wavefront cosmic-ray air showers is approximately hyperbolic shape. The predict a slightly steeper towards East West, but this asymmetry negligible against measurement uncertainties LOPES. At axis distances ≳ 50 m, can be approximated by simple cone. According to simulations, cone angle...
We observe a correlation between the slope of radio lateral distributions and mean muon pseudorapidity 59 individual cosmic-ray-air-shower events. The are measured with LOPES, digital interferometer colocated multidetector-air-shower array KASCADE-Grande, which includes muon-tracking detector. result proves experimentally that measurements sensitive to longitudinal development cosmic-ray air showers. This is one main prerequisites for using arrays ultra-high-energy particle physics astrophysics.
The radio technique is a promising method for detection of cosmic-ray air showers energies around $100\,$PeV and higher with an array antennas. Since the amplitude signal can be measured absolutely increases shower energy, measurements used to determine air-shower energy on absolute scale. We show that calibrated detectors operated in coincidence host experiments measuring based other techniques comparing scales these experiments. Using two approaches, first via direct measurements, second...
Abstract LOPES, the LOFAR prototype station, was an antenna array for cosmic-ray air showers operating from 2003 to 2013 within KASCADE-Grande experiment. Meanwhile, analysis is finished and data of air-shower events measured by LOPES are available with open access in KASCADE Cosmic Ray Data Center (KCDC). This article intends provide a summary achievements, results, lessons learned LOPES. By digital, interferometric beamforming detection became possible radio-loud environment Karlsruhe...
Aims. We wish to study the spectral dependence of radio emission from cosmic-ray air showers around .
Aims. We want to understand the emission mechanism of radio from air showers determine origin high-energy cosmic rays. Therefore, we study geometry shower measured with LOPES and search for systematic effects between direction determined on signal provided by particle detector array KASCADE.
LOPES is a digital antenna array at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, for cosmic-ray air-shower measurements. Triggered by co-located KASCADE-Grande array, detects radio emission air showers via interferometry. We summarize status and recent results. In particular, we present an update on reconstruction primary-particle properties based almost 500 events above 100 PeV. With LOPES, arrival direction can be reconstructed with precision least 0.65{\deg}, energy 20 %, which,...
The feasibility of a next generation neutrino observatory in Europe is being considered within the LAGUNA design study. To accommodate giant detectors and shield them from cosmic rays, new very large underground infrastructure required. Seven potential candidate sites different parts at several distances CERN are studied: Boulby (UK), Canfranc (Spain), Fr\'ejus (France/Italy), Pyh\"asalmi (Finland), Polkowice-Sieroszowice (Poland), Slanic (Romania) Umbria (Italy). study aims comprehensive...

In the previous years, LOPES emerged as a very successful experiment measuring radio emission from air showers in MHz frequency range. parallel, theoretical description of was developed further and REAS became widely used simulation Monte Carlo code. 3 well CoREAS are based on endpoint formalism, i.e. they calculate air-shower without assuming specific mechanisms. While is histograms derived CORSIKA simulations, directly implemented into loss information due to histogramming particle...
Precise measurements of the muon flux are important for different practical applications, both in environmental studies and estimation water equivalent depths underground sites. A mobile detector cosmic has been set up at IFIN-HH, Romania. The device is used to measure on locations surface underground. Its first configuration, not present, composed two 1 m 2 scintillator plates, each viewed by wave length shifters read out Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). more recent consists detection layers,...
