Diffusion of molecules in brain extracellular space is constrained by two macroscopic parameters, tortuosity factor λ and volume fraction α. Recent studies slices show that when osmolarity reduced, increases while α decreases. In contrast, with increased osmolarity, increases, but attains a plateau. Using homogenization theory variety lattice models, we found the plateau behavior can be explained if shape cells changes nonuniformly during shrinking or swelling induced osmotic challenge. The...

It has long been assumed that one important mechanism for the dissipation of local potassium gradients in brain extracellular space is so-called spatial buffer, generally associated with glial cells. To date, however, there no analytical description characteristic patterns K+ clearance mediated by such a mechanism. This study reanalyzed mathematical model Gardner-Medwin (1983, J. Physiol. Abstract In this paper, we further develop the general theory of microdialysis by extending linear model Bungay et al . to provide a theoretical basis for in vitro and vivo microdialysis. Specifically, considered effect active clearance processes on microdialysis, thereby elaborated Benveniste endogenous compounds.
