Recent observations have shown that both Chlamydia pneumoniae antigens and DNA may be found within atherosclerotic lesions. In this study, we evaluated the ability of C. to infect cells make up lesions, including endothelial cells, smooth muscle cholesterol-loaded cells. The organism readily infected rabbit, bovine, human aortic Cholesterol-loaded were even more susceptible infection. trachomatis inefficiently demonstrating is not a characteristic all members genus Chlamydia. bovine poorly....

Proteoglycans of the extracellular matrix are vital to growth and evolution malignant neoplasms. The present study determined composition proteoglycans isolated from paired specimens normal breast adenocarcinoma harvested each patient (n = 8). were then tested for their ability stimulate endothelial cell proliferation.Proteoglycans by extraction with 4 M guanidine hydrochloride purified CsCl density-gradient centrifugation. characterized simulate proliferation. In case, total proteoglycan...

To elucidate the correlation between vascular cholesterol metabolism and proteoglycan (PrGl) biosynthesis, we investigated PrGl synthesis in human aortic smooth muscle cells (SMCs) after enrichment with cationized low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Compared normal SMCs, total by cholesterol-enriched decreased 2.4-fold (11874±530 d.p.m. per 105 compared 4890±385 cells). This was net result of a 6.9-fold reduction medium (11000±490 1580± 246 cells) 3.8-fold increase cellular over controls (874±27...

Unit-specific antibiograms have developed to guide clinicians appropriate antibiotic choices for subsets of patients. The additional level a unit- and respiratory-specific antibiogram surgical trauma patients defines key differences in susceptibility information treating hospital-acquired pneumonia. This was three-year, retrospective single-center study. A total 729 positive respiratory specimens from 612 were analyzed using Quality Compass Pathfinder(®), the antibiotic-reporting software....

C8α-γ deficiency was examined in four unrelated African Americans. Two individuals were compound heterozygotes for a previously reported point mutation exon 9. mRNA from the remaining six C8A alleles contained 10 nt insertion between 992 and 993 corresponding to junction exons 6 7. This suggested that these caused by splicing defect. Genomic sequencing revealed G→A intron 6, upstream of 7 acceptor site. converts GG an AG, generates consensus 3' splice site shifts reading frame, creates...

Abstract Background Elevated levels of procalcitonin (PCT) reflect systemic inflammation associated with bacterial infection (BI). Compared other acute-phase reactants, PCT more rapidly rise BI and decline quickly as improves. A protocol was implemented at University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO) in November 2017 that guided discontinuation antimicrobial therapy septic shock patients if clinically improving declining PCT. Methods We performed a retrospective chart review UMCNO 18+ years...
