We present Advanced Camera for Surveys, NICMOS, and Keck adaptive-optics-assisted photometry of 20 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cluster Supernova Survey. The SNe were discovered over redshift interval 0.623 < z 1.415. Of these Ia, 14 pass our strict selection cuts are used in combination with world's sample to derive best current constraints on dark energy. new 10 beyond = 1, thereby nearly doubling statistical weight HST-discovered this redshift. The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is a Director's Discretionary program on HST in Cycle 5 to image an undistinguished field at high Galactic latitude four passbands as deeply reasonably possible. These images provide the most detailed view date of distant galaxies and are likely be important for wide range studies galaxy evolution cosmology. In order optimize observing time available, northern continuous viewing zone was selected were taken ten consecutive days, or approximately 150 orbits....
We describe the target selection and resulting properties of a spectroscopic sample luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from imaging data Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). These are selected on basis color magnitude to yield intrinsically that extends fainter farther than main flux-limited portion SDSS galaxy sample. The Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) is a 524-orbit multi-cycle treasury program to use the gravitational lensing properties of 25 galaxy clusters accurately constrain their mass distributions. survey, described in detail this paper, will definitively establish degree concentration dark matter cluster cores, key prediction CDM. In the course of its commissioning observations, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has produced one largest redshift samples galaxies selected from CCD images. Using 11,275 complete to r* = 17.6 over 140 deg2, we compute luminosity function in band a range -23 < M -16 (for h 1). The result is well-described by Schechter with parameters ϕ* (1.46 ± 0.12) × 10-2 h3 Mpc-3, M* -20.83 0.03, and α -1.20 0.03. implied density j ≈ (2.6 0.3) 108h L⊙ Mpc-3. We find that surface brightness selection...

We measure the morphology--density relation (MDR) and morphology-radius (MRR) for galaxies in seven z ~ 1 clusters that have been observed with Advanced Camera Surveys on board Hubble Space Telescope. We present a candidate for the most distant galaxy known to date with photometric redshift of z = 10.7+0.6−0.4 (95% confidence limits; < 9.5 galaxies types ruled out at 7.2σ). This J-dropout Lyman break galaxy, named MACS0647-JD, was discovered as part Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey Hubble (CLASH). observe three magnified images this due strong gravitational lensing by cluster MACSJ0647.7+7015 0.591. Black hole masses predicted from the Mbh-sigma relationship conflict with those Mbh-L for most luminous galaxies, such as brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). This is because stellar velocity dispersion, sigma, increases only weakly L BCGs and other giant ellipticals. The predicts that may have Mbh approaching 10^{10}M_sol, while M-sigma always Mbh<3X10^9M_sol. We argue a plausible or even preferred description of similar luminosity. If cores in central density are formed by binary BHs, then...

We present a joint shear-and-magnification weak-lensing analysis of sample 16 X-ray-regular and 4 high-magnification galaxy clusters at 0.19 ≲ z 0.69 selected from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). Our uses wide-field multi-color imaging, taken primarily Suprime-Cam on Subaru Telescope. From stacked-shear-only X-ray-selected subsample, we detect ensemble-averaged lensing signal total signal-to-noise ratio ≃ 25 in radial range 200–3500 kpc h−1, providing integrated...
Growing observational evidence now indicates that nebular line emission has a significant impact on the rest-frame optical fluxes of z~5-7 galaxies observed with Spitzer. This makes appear more massive, lower specific star formation rates. However, corrections for this have been very difficult to perform reliably due huge uncertainties overall strength such at z>~5.5. Here, we present most direct yet ubiquitous high-EW [OIII]+Hbeta in Lyman-break z~7, while also presenting strategy an...
In 1964, Refsdal hypothesized that a supernova whose light traversed multiple paths around strong gravitational lens could be used to measure the rate of cosmic expansion. We report discovery such system. Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we have found four images single forming an Einstein cross configuration redshift z=0.54 elliptical galaxy in MACS J1149.6+2223 cluster. The cluster's potential also creates z=1.49 spiral host galaxy, and future appearance elsewhere cluster field is expected....
We present an analysis of 15 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at redshift z > 1 (9 1.5 < 2.3) recently discovered in the CANDELS and CLASH Multi-Cycle Treasury programs using WFC3 on Hubble Space Telescope. combine these SNe with a new compilation 1050 Ia, jointly calibrated corrected for simulated survey biases to produce accurate distance measurements. unbiased constraints expansion rate six redshifts range 0.07 based only this combined SN sample. The gravitationally lensed supernova Refsdal appeared in multiple images produced through gravitational lensing by a massive foreground galaxy cluster.
