West Nile virus (WNV) is an emergent pathogen that widely distributed in North and Central America. The recent introduction South America has focused attention on the spread of WNV across Southern American countries. transmission network involves mosquitoes, birds, horses humans. serological evaluation sera from 678 equids 478 birds was performed using a WNV-specific blocking ELISA, only positive results were confirmed by plaque reduction neutralisation tests (PRNTs). Molecular analysis 992...
ABSTRACT: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis that can infect buffaloes and other mammalians, it’s caused by Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Leptospira spp. The infection occurs through contact with urine or contaminated environment mucous membranes animals, disease has two phases: leptospiremia leptospiruria. objective this study was to determine frequency leptospirosis in state Paraná, Brazil, as well main serovars present area. A total 276 blood samples were collected from 18 properties...
OBJECTIVE: Reports on bat rabies in Brazil are sporadic and isolated. This study aimed at describing the detection of virus bats state São Paulo. METHODS: A total 7,393 from 235 municipalities north northwestern areas Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, were assessed according to their morphological morphometric characteristics 1997 2002. Fluorescent antibody test mice inoculation used for viral identification. RESULTS: Of all samples examined, 1.3% was positive, ranging 0.2% 1.6% 2001. There found...
Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite which affects dogs as definitive hosts and several mammalian species intermediate mainly causing abortions central nervous system disorders. The reemerging population of cart horses for carrying recycling material in urban areas major cities Brazil may have an impact on disease spreading, these animals be used sentinels environmental surveillance. Thus, the present study investigated frequency sp. antibodies from Curitiba surrounding areas, Paraná...
Phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships within among species of the Atlantic Forest spiny rat Trinomys (family Echimyidae) were examined using cytochrome b sequence data. Levels divergence are as high those found taxa echimyids that recognized different genera. contains three distinct monophyletic clades show a striking concordance with vegetational distribution. Haplotypes clade 1 distributed along coastal margins southeastern Brazil, following moist tropical forest. Members 2 in...
This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the pathogenicity of rabies virus isolated from bats dogs, verify efficacy a commercial vaccine against these isolates. For evaluation pathogenicity, mice were inoculated by intramuscular route (IM) with 500MICLD₅₀/0.03 mL viruses. The cross-protection test performed vaccinating groups subcutaneous challenged through intracerebral (IC) route. Isolates fully pathogenic when IC When intramuscularly, observed showed different death rates: 60.0% for...
This report describes the first detection of an equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) neuropathogenic variant (G2254/D752) in Brazil from a case fatal myeloencephalopathy (EHM) mare. The results nucleotide sequencing EHV-1 ORF30 gene showed that two other Brazilian isolates EHM cases are representatives non-neuropathogenic (A2254/N752), suggesting unidentified factors probably also involved neuropathogenicity horses. These findings will contribute to epidemiological knowledge infection Brazil.
Toxoplasma gondii, the agent for toxoplasmosis, has worldwide distribution. Horses normally play a secondary role in its life cycle, but movement around urban areas, feeding on grass and increasing use of carthorses gathering recyclable material some areas Brazil may increase their exposure to T. gondii infection. The aim present study was investigate frequency anti-T. antibodies metropolitan region Curitiba, PR. IgG against were detected using indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT)...
The prevalence of antibodies against Equine Influenza Virus (EIV) was determined in 529 equines living on ranches the municipality Poconé, Pantanal area Brazil, by means hemagglutination inhibition test, using subtype H3N8 as antigen. distribution and possible association among positive animal were evaluated chi-square spatial autoregressive multiple linear regression models. EIV estimated at 45.2% (95% CI 30.2 - 61.1%) with titers ranging from 20 to 1,280 HAU. Seropositive found 92.0%...
ABSTRACT Abortion and complications in reproduction are important causes of economic loss horse breeding. Studies its causal agents can help to identify the primary pathogens or other factors involved define appropriate measures reduce occurrence. This research aimed investigate equine abortion, stillbirth, perinatal mortality regions Brazil. Tissue from aborted fetuses, stillbirths, neonates foals submitted Biological Institute São Paulo, Brazil, January 2010 July 2013 were processed for...
In a clinical survey of caprine arthritis-encephalitis in 14 naturally infected herds the State São Paulo, Brazil, 17.1% (64/374) seroreagents presented articular form disease and 6.6% (17/249) seroreagent females mammary disease.
ABSTRACT: Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is an important pathogen that causes abortion, neonatal disease, respiratory disorders, and neurological syndrome in equine populations worldwide. To evaluate EHV-1 as a cause of abortion perinatal mortality Brazil, tissue samples from 105 aborted fetuses, stillbirths, foals up to one month age were examined using virus isolation, immunohistochemistry (IHC), histopathology, nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Two fetuses positive for by PCR,...
A large number of Brazilian zoos keep many endangered species deer, however, very few disease surveillance studies have been conducted among captive cervids. Blood samples from 32 deer (Blastocerus dichotomus, Mazama nana and americana) kept in captivity at Bela Vista Biological Sanctuary (Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil) were investigated for 10 ruminant pathogens, with the aims monitoring health status evaluating any potential zoonotic risk. Deer serum tested Brucella abortus, Leptospira (23...
Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) have the potential to act as hosts of important infectious diseases, particularly zoonoses. Blood samples from 17 at Curitiba zoo were collected evaluate occurrences anti-Toxoplasma gondii and anti-Neospora caninum antibodies, tested using indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT). Anti-T. anti-N. antibodies detected in 4/17 (23.5%) samples, respectively. The present study has shown that exposed T. andN. therefore may intermediate hosts, spreading...
Serum samples collected from 358 wild boars (Sus scrofa) in breeding farms São Paulo, southeast Brazil, 1998 to 2001, were tested for antibodies against pseudorabies virus (PRV) by means of serum neutralization (SN) and enzyme-linked immunobsorbent assay (ELISA). Seropositive animals detected three seven herds analyzed. Overall seroprevalence as assessed SN was 30.7%, ranging 25.2% 100% the that presented seropositive animals. Indirect ELISA lower (19.3%). Sensitivity specificity equal 57.3%...
