KLS-1 Lunar regolith simulant was microwave sintered to explore its potential applicability in future lunar construction. The effects of sintering temperature on linear shrinkage, density, porosity, and microstructural, mechanical, thermal properties were investigated. As the increased, shrinkage density increased porosity decreased. Structural evolution samples characterized by scanning electron microscopy X-ray diffraction. Unconfined compressive strength testing showed that mechanical...

Abstract A spark plasma sintering (SPS) process has been explored to densify FJS‐lunar soil simulants for structural applications in space explorations. The effect of SPS conditions, such as temperature and pressure, on the densification behavior, phase transformation, microstructural evolution, mechanical properties FJS‐1 have examined by conducting X‐ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy imaging, nano/micro indentation testing. Test analysis results were also compared from powder...

With the recent discovery of water-ice and lava tubes on Moon Mars along with development in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) technology, planetary exploration has focused rover (or lander)-based surface missions toward base construction for long-term human habitation. However, a 3D terrain map, mostly based orbiters’ images, insufficient resolutions purposes. In this regard, paper introduces visual simultaneous localization mapping (SLAM)-based robotic method employing stereo camera system...

Charging of the lunar surface induced by solar radiation can potentially threaten in situ resource utilization. Associated issues include dust adhesion and material degradation. Photoelectric currents are primary cause charging. This work reports on development a unit capable measuring photoelectric vacuum chamber, which simulate charging under conditions similar to those moon daytime. The main components mesh grid, photocathode specimen, ring collector. from an aluminum sample were measured...

Abstract We propose a new method, i.e., the statistical phase fraction (SPF) to estimate total porosity and spatial distribution of local porosities from subresolution pore-dominated X-ray microtomography images porous materials. The SPF method assumes that voxel in CT image is composed either single or maximum three pure phases matter (solid, liquid air). Microwave sintering is regarded as one of the most appropriate technologies that enable in situ resource utilization (ISRU) surface construction for future lunar base development. During process microwave sintering, electromagnetic radiant energy absorbed by soil grains whereby temperature increment and bonding take place. However, due to anisotropic field thermal runaway phenomenon, a gradient could occur sintered regolith grains. This can induce local flaws (such cracks) enclosed pores...

Such have many advantages over rigid equations design codes, least that they can be continually ‘retrained’ when new field or research data become available.
