A low-cost, equipment-free rapid antigen test distinguishes dengue virus serotypes and Zika in patient sera without detectable cross-reactivity.
BACKGROUNDAlthough convalescent plasma has been widely used to treat severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), data from randomized controlled trials that support its efficacy are limited.METHODSWe conducted a randomized, double-blind, trial among adults hospitalized with and critical COVID-19 at 5 sites in New York City (USA) Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Patients were 2:1 receive single transfusion of either or normal control plasma. The primary outcome was clinical status 28 days following...
Abstract Brazil, which is hyperendemic for dengue virus (DENV), has had recent Zika (ZIKV) and (CHIKV) Chikungunya outbreaks. Since March 2016, CHIKV the arbovirus infection most frequently diagnosed in Rio de Janeiro. In analysis of 1835 syndromic patients, screened by real time RT-PCR, 56.4% cases were attributed to CHIKV, 29.6% ZIKV, 14.1% DENV-4. Sequence analyses from sixteen samples revealed that East-Central-South-African ( ECSA) genotype been circulating Brazil since 2013 [95%...
Introduction Anemia is a common condition at tuberculosis diagnosis, and there evidence that its prevalence higher in patients with than those infected Mycobacterium healthy controls. Information about anemia during diagnosis still scarce the Brazilian population. The aim of this study was to describe cared for referral center association clinical forms other characteristics these patients. Materials methods This retrospective cross-sectional diagnosed from January 2015 December 2018...
Chagas disease control programmes have decreased the prevalence of in Latin America. Together with migration to urban areas and increase life expectancy, a new scenario for has emerged Brazil most patients currently elderly individuals living areas. However, acute cases still occur due vector transmission by sylvatic vectors oral contaminated food. Therefore, we characterized clinical epidemiological profile followed at Evandro National Institute Infectious Diseases Rio de Janeiro, Brazil....
Abstract Background Although convalescent plasma has been widely used to treat severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), data from randomized controlled trials that support its efficacy are limited. Objective To evaluate the clinical and safety of among adults hospitalized with critical COVID-19. Design Randomized, double-blind, controlled, multicenter, phase 2 trial conducted April 21 st November 27 th , 2020. Setting Five hospitals in New York City (NY, USA) Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)....
Blood transfusions are used to treat potentially life-threatening medical conditions and health problems in a short space of time. However, can produce adverse events, some which may be related immune system responses or the transmission infectious agents (e.g., HCV, HTLV-I/II, HBV, human immunodeficiency virus). Leukoreduction is process white blood cells intentionally removed from donated minimize risk reactions individuals receiving transfusion. This an integrative review literature...
Histoplasmosis is worldwide systemic mycoses caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. The isolation and identification of H. capsulatum in culture reference test for histoplasmosis diagnosis confirmation. However, absence it, serology has been used as a presumptive through antibody antigen detection. purpose present study was to validate an immunoassay method (western blot) antibodies detection histoplasmosis. To western blot (WB) conducted using 118 serum samples from patients...
We tested 210 dengue virus‒negative samples collected from febrile patients during a virus type 4 outbreak in Rio de Janeiro April 2013 and found 3 positive for Zika virus. Our findings support previously published entomological data suggesting was introduced into Brazil October 2012-May 2013.
Background Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery with cardiopulmonary (CPB) is associated systemic inflammatory response and endothelial dysfunction. Our hypothesis that CPB-induced post-operative dysfunction may be detected using laser Doppler perfusion monitoring (LDPM) in the skin microcirculation. Methods We used LDPM to investigate subacute effects of CPB on microvascular reactivity among patients undergoing CABG CPB. Thirty were submitted study microcirculation blood sample...
Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection varies clinically depending on the host’s immune status. Due to red blood cell precursors tropism, B19V can cause chronic anemia and transient aplastic crisis in patients with immunosuppression or hemolysis. We report three rare cases of Brazilian adults living human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. All presented severe required transfusions. The first patient had low CD4+ counts was treated intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). As he remained poorly...
Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection is associated with neurological abnormalities, such as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and peripheral neuropathy (PN). Hepatitis C (HCV) the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, causes PN in approximately 9% patients. Because interplay between these potentially neuropathogenic viruses same individual still poorly understood, clinical laboratory outcomes co-infected patients were...
Reports of side effects vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are increasing worldwide. Capillary leak and vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia very rare but life-threatening adverse events that should be identified early treated. However, isolated can indicate pseudothrombocytopenia. In certain people, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) induces an in vitro platelet aggregation, resulting misleading underestimation counts. It is...
Purpose To describe a case of Acute Zika infection with ocular involvementMethods: Review clinical recordsResults: Patient presented sudden blurred vision in both eyes during an acute episode zika virus infection. Ophthalmological examination revealed picture multifocal choroiditis eyes. Lesions improved and visual acuities returned to normal level without any treatment. Conclusion: Ocular changes is rare condition. Patiens may present spontaneous recovery
The mechanisms that determine the progression to cardiac or digestive forms of chronic Chagas disease (CD) are still unclear. We assessed association between blood group antigens ABO, Rh, Kell, Kidd, Duffy and MNS, CD clinical forms.
