We obtained a topographic computer analysis of the electroencephalogram in 53 normal elderly subjects. Normal aging was not associated with an increase slow (delta) activity. However, cognitive performance correlated positively fast (beta) activity particularly frontal leads, even after controlling for age, education, occupation, and medication. Five subjects who showed early signs decline, had all marked reduction beta suggesting that this may be indication intellectual loss.

Postprandial blood ammonia levels were significantly higher in 22 patients with Alzheimer's disease than 37 control subjects. In the Alzheimer group, fasting whose EEGs showed triphasic waves without this change. The direction of change from to postprandial was also different between these two groups.

The authors describe a series of 22 patients with dementia and behavioral disturbances, including agitation, aggression, delusions, hallucinations, who were treated risperidone. Risperidone, in low doses, was well tolerated; 50% experienced significant improvement, although some extrapyramidal symptoms.
