Abstract Background The majority of patients with penicillin allergy labels tolerate penicillins. Inappropriate avoidance is associated increased hospitalisation, infections and healthcare costs. Aims To examine the documentation adverse drug reactions ( ADR ) in a large‐scale hospital‐based electronic health record. Methods Penicillin were extracted from 96 708 patient records Enterprise Patient Administration System South Australia. Expert criteria used to determine consistency entry...
This cohort study examines the natural history and response to treatment of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor–associated ketoacidosis compared with that type 1 diabetes–associated ketoacidosis.
Erroneous penicillin allergy labels are associated with significant health and economic costs. This study aimed to determine whether deep learning-facilitated proactive consultation facilitate delabelling may further enhance inpatient delabelling. prospective implementation utilised a learning-guided service, which utilized an protocol. The intervention group comprised all admitted inpatients over the course of 14-week period in tertiary hospital. rate was compared that historical control...
Inaccurate penicillin allergy labels may be delabelled following evaluation. The intervention in this study was an email-based notification system regarding the appropriateness for evaluation, with a view to delabelling, as identified by deep learning artificial intelligence algorithm. Of group (n = 59), three (5.1%) individuals had their allergies delabelled, which significantly more than control (0%, P 0.002). Further research optimise such approaches is required.
Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is a broad spectrum antibiotic in use for more than 50 years. It has an important indication as first line agent the prophylaxis of opportunistic infections, particularly Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP), immunosuppressed patients. For those who have history allergy or severe intolerance to TMP-SMX, pentamidine, dapsone atovaquone may be substituted; however there evidence that TMP-SMX offers superior coverage PJP, toxoplasmosis, and nocardiosis....

Introduction: Penicillin allergy labels are common. However, many penicillin have been applied incorrectly and in fact represent intolerance. Patients with intolerance can receive antibiotics. The effect of on prescribing practices is uncertain. Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included consecutive general medicine patients admitted to two tertiary hospitals over a 12-month period. Electronic medical records were reviewed for practices. Instances prescription previously...
Abstract Antiviral drugs were rapidly implemented into clinical practice for the treatment of high‐risk patients with COVID‐19, prompting development statewide guidelines. This South‐Australian study reviewed guideline adherence, assessed prescribing patterns and highlighted inappropriate management relative drug–drug interactions dosing renal function. Additionally, it evaluated impact antiviral drug use suggested methods to improve quality medicines.
The burden of stroke on the community is growing, and therefore, so need for a therapy to overcome disability following stroke. Cellular-based therapies are being actively investigated at pre-clinical clinical level. Studies have reported beneficial effects exogenous stem cell implantation, however, these benefits also associated with limited survival implanted cells. This exploratory study use transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as complementary increase implantation human dental pulp...
Allergy to opioids is the second most common drug allergy label in electronic health records (EHR). Adverse reactions (ADR) cause significant morbidity and contribute healthcare costs, while incorrect opioid labels may unnecessarily complicate patient management. To examine documentation of ADR a large-scale hospital-based EHR.A cross-sectional retrospective review EHR at four public hospitals South Australia was conducted. Data were extracted from all entries including reported allergen,...
Clostridium difficile infection is a rare precipitant of atypical haemolytic uraemic syndrome (aHUS). A 46-year-old man presented with watery diarrhoea following an ileocaecal resection. He developed acute kidney injury anaemia, thrombocytopaenia, raised lactate dehydrogenase, low haptoglobin, and red cell fragments. Stool sample was positive for C. toxin B. became dialysis-dependent as his renal function continued to worsen despite treatment empiric antibiotics plasma exchange. The ADAMTS13...
Purpose of the article Patients with penicillin allergy labels are more likely to have postoperative wound infections. When interrogated, a significant number individuals do not allergies and may be delabeled. This study was conducted gain preliminary evidence into potential role artificial intelligence in assisting perioperative adverse reaction (AR) evaluation.
Abstract Background Cefalexin is a commonly prescribed oral antibiotic, with similar side chain to amoxicillin. The objectives of this study were (1) describe the frequency and nature previously recorded cefalexin adverse reaction (AR) labels in electronic medical record (EMR) inpatient cohort, (2) evaluate accuracy these (3) examine association between allergy label antibiotics during an admission. Methods Consecutive admissions under general medicine tertiary hospital over 1-year period...
A 55-year-old man presented with severe right upper quadrant abdominal pain and hypertension up to 231/171 mm Hg on a background of known adrenal mass, intravenous drug use recurrent anxiety attacks. CT showed heterogenous lesion the gland but sudden remained unexplained. After correction blood pressure analgesia antihypertensives, patient developed type 2 non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction that was treated aspirin therapeutic enoxaparin. This resulted in worsening repeat angiogram...
Machine learning may assist with the identification of potentially inappropriate penicillin allergy labels. Strategies to improve performance existing models for this task include use additional training data, synthetic data and transfer learning.
Background: Research on vaccine effectiveness is crucial to guide public health policy. In an Australian regional area, we evaluated and waning immunity for the prevention of hospitalisations associated with SARS-CoV-2.Aim: Estimate against hospitalisation symptomatic COVID-19 in a general First Nations population. Methods: notification data between January 2022 March Central Queensland region were linked Immunisation Register hospital administration data.Vaccinated unvaccinated cohorts...
