The diagnosis of gastroparesis implies delayed gastric emptying. diagnostic gold standard is scintigraphy, but techniques and measured endpoints vary widely among institutions. In this study, a simplified scintigraphic measurement emptying was compared to conventional normal values defined in healthy subjects. In 123 volunteers (aged 19-73 yr, 60 women 63 men) from 11 centers, scintigraphy used assess 99Tc-labeled low fat meal (egg substitute) percent intragastric residual contents 60, 120,...

Growing evidence suggests that patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have increased intestinal permeability. In addition, mucosal soluble mediators are involved in the pathophysiology of pain IBS. We aimed to investigate (1) paracellular permeability colonic biopsies IBS; and (2) ability factors from reproduce these alterations vitro.Paracellular healthy subjects IBS was measured by mounting Ussing chambers. Cleared supernatant (SUP) culture collected applied Caco-2 cells for 48 h....

OBJECTIVES: Immune activation may be involved in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, relative magnitude this immune component and its correlation with gender gastrointestinal complaints IBS patients remains poorly elucidated. METHODS: We enrolled 48 patients, either diarrhea or constipation, 12 microscopic colitis, 20 ulcerative 24 healthy controls. Colonic immunocytes were identified quantitative immunohistochemistry on mucosal biopsies. Gastrointestinal symptoms...

Summary Background : Patient‐based symptom assessments are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of medical treatments for gastroparesis. Aim To summarize development and measurement qualities Gastroparesis Cardinal Symptom Index (GCSI), a new measure gastroparesis‐related symptoms. Methods The GCSI was based on reviews literature, clinician interviews patient focus groups. (i.e. reliability, validity) were examined in 169 gastroparesis patients. Patients recruited from seven clinical...

We report the clinical and intestinal manometric findings in a group of 42 patients with chronic idiopathic pseudo-obstruction evaluated at Mayo Clinic. The main manifestations these were nausea vomiting (83%), abdominal pain (74%), distension (57%), constipation (36%), diarrhoea (29%), urinary symptoms (17%). These preceded surgery all patients. Air fluid levels or distended bowel loops occurred 57% dilated bladder excretory pathway 17%. All showed abnormalities none which are seen healthy...
