Mercury Methylating Microbes (Hg) most commonly becomes bioavailable and enters the food web as organic form methylmercury, where it induces acute toxicity effects that can be magnified up chain. But natural anthropogenic Hg exists inorganic 2+ is only transformed into methylmercury by anaerobic microorganisms—typically sulfur-reducing bacteria. Using comparative genomics, Parks et al. (p. 1332 , published online 7 February; see Perspective Poulain Barkay ) identified two genes encode a...

Degeneration of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCNs) is associated with cognitive impairments Alzheimer's disease (AD), implying that BFCNs hold potentials in exploring stem cell-based replacement therapy for AD. However, studies on derivation from embryonic cells (ESCs) are limited, and the application ESC-derived remains to be determined. Here, we report differentiation approaches directing both mouse human ESCs into mature BFCNs. These exhibit features similar those their vivo...

Methylmercury (MeHg) is known to degrade photochemically, but it remains unclear what roles naturally dissolved organic matter (DOM) and complexing ligands play in MeHg photodegradation. Here we investigate the rates mechanisms of photodegradation using DOM with varying oxidation states origins as well molecular structures. All increased rate under solar irradiation, first-order constants varied depending on state type concentration ligands. Reduced photochemically degraded 3 times faster...

Recent studies have revealed an essential role for embryonic cortical development in the pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, genetic basis and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we generate mutant human stem cell lines (Mut hESCs) carrying NR2F1-R112K mutation that has been identified a patient with ASD features investigate their alterations. Mut hESCs overproduce ventral telencephalic neuron progenitors (ventral NPCs)...

Abstract Besides participating in diverse pathological and physiological processes, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are also excellent drug‐delivery vehicles. However, clinical drugs modulating EV levels still lacking. Here, we show that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce EVs by enhancing macropinocytosis‐mediated uptake. PPIs accelerate intestinal cell endocytosis of autocrine immunosuppressive through macropinocytosis, thereby aggravating inflammatory bowel disease. PPI‐induced...

There is growing concern about the distribution of nanoplastics (NPs) in central nervous system (CNS), whereas intrusion poorly understood. In this study, fluorescent-labeled polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) were microinjected into different areas zebrafish embryo to mimic routes exposure. PS-NPs observed brain, eyes, and spinal cord through gametal It indicated that maternally derived specially distributed CNS during early development. Importantly, these stranded but not transferred other organs...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by memory impairments in its earliest clinical phase. The synaptic loss and dysfunction leading to failures of networks AD brain directly cause cognitive deficits patient. However, it remains unclear whether the could be repaired. In this study, we generated functional human induced neural progenitor/stem cells (iNPCs) that had been transplanted into hippocampus immunodeficient wild-type mice. grafted iNPCs efficiently differentiated neurons...

Excessive neuroinflammation after spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major hurdle during nerve repair. Although proinflammatory macrophage/microglia-mediated plays important roles, the underlying mechanism that triggers and aggravating factors remain unclear. The present study identified role of semaphorin3C (SEMA3C) in immunoregulation SCI. SEMA3C expression level peaked 7 days post-injury (dpi) decreased by 14 dpi.

Leptomeningeal anastomoses or pial collateral vessels play a critical role in cerebral blood flow (CBF) restoration following ischemic stroke. The magnitude of this adaptive response is postulated to be controlled by the endothelium, although underlying molecular mechanisms remain under investigation.
