During 1974-1988, the incidence of anaerobic bacteremia at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) decreased. This trend occurred nationally, prompting calls for discontinuation routine blood cultures. However, recently, sites infection have been shown not to be as predictable once thought, and since 1993, has increased significantly in our medical center.Records from Division Clinical Microbiology were used tabulate number cases patients clinic 12-year period 1993 through 2004. Medical records with...
Infectious disease outbreaks play an important role in global morbidity and mortality. Real-time epidemic forecasting provides opportunity to predict geographic spread as well case counts better inform public health interventions when occur. Challenges recent advances predictive modeling are discussed here. We identified data needs the areas of surveillance, mobility, host environmental susceptibility, pathogen transmissibility, population density, healthcare capacity. Constraints...
Abstract Data from digital disease surveillance tools such as ProMED and HealthMap can complement the field during ongoing outbreaks. Our aim was to investigate use of data collected through in real-time outbreak analysis. We developed a flexible statistical model quantify spatial heterogeneity risk spread an forecast short term incidence trends. The applied retrospectively by 2013–2016 West African Ebola epidemic for comparison, WHO data. Using data, able robustly 1–4 weeks advance...
Hepatitis E virus is a common cause of acute viral hepatitis. We analyzed reports hepatitis outbreaks among forcibly displaced populations in sub-Saharan Africa during 2010-2020. Twelve independent occurred, and >30,000 cases were reported. Transmission was attributed to poor sanitation overcrowding.
The Guide to Infection Control in the Hospital (Guide) is an open access resource produced by International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) assist prevention of infection acquisition and transmission worldwide. A survey was distributed 8055 current users understand their needs. The consisted 48-questions regarding control (IPC) availability needs. Dichotomous questions, Likert scale-type open-and closed-ended questions were used.Respondents (n=1121) from 194 countries six WHO regions...
Abstract Background The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates the number of forcibly displaced people increased from 22.7 million in 1996 to 67.7 2016. Human mobility is associated with introduction infectious disease pathogens. aim this study was describe range pathogens populations over time using an informal event monitoring system. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis ProMED, digital system, identify reports outbreak events involving between and Number per year...
A hackathon is best described as an 'innovation marathon'. Derived from the words 'hacking' and 'marathon', it brings together multidisciplinary teams to collaborate intensely over a short period of time define problem, devise solution, design working prototype. International scientific meetings are conducive successful hackathons, providing audience expert professionals who describe challenges ensure proposed solutions address end-user needs. Collaborations with local organizations academic...
ObjectivesThe protracted and violent conflict in Syria has resulted large-scale displacement of people destruction health sanitation infrastructure. The aim this study was to examine epidemiological trends vector-borne disease (VBD) outbreaks before following the onset Syrian (2011).MethodsProMED, a digital surveillance tool, queried for VBD outbreak reports affecting humans animals select bordering countries between 2003 2018. Data were normalized by dividing number unique events total...
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) accounts for more than two million deaths per year in children < 5 years of age. Recognition pathogens is vital guiding antibiotic treatment. In Gabon, no epidemiologic data on childhood CAP were available to help guide therapy. We conducted a prospective, hospital-based, cross-sectional survey at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Lambarene, assess importance atypical organisms ( Chlamydia pneumoniae , Mycoplasma Bordetella pertussis and Legionella...
To describe a crowdsourced disease surveillance project (EpiCore) and evaluate its usefulness in obtaining information regarding potential outbreaks.Volunteer human, animal environmental health professionals from around the world were recruited to EpiCore trained provide early verification of threat alerts their geographical region via secure, easy-to-use, online platform. Experts area emerging infectious diseases sent requests for on unverified threats these volunteers, who used local...
Though women increasingly make up the majority of medical-school and other science graduates, they remain a minority in academic biomedical settings, where are less likely to hold leadership positions or be awarded research funding. A major factor is career breaks that disproportionately take see familial duties. They experience related, but overlooked, hurdle upon their return: often too old eligible for 'early-career researcher' grants 'career-development' awards, which stepping stones...
We report a case of 79-y-old male with enterococcal endocarditis presenting dysphagia and weight loss. The patient's longstanding underlying bacteremia was thought to have caused pro-inflammatory changes leading alterations in the neuronal environment affecting peripheral nerve function. Dysphagia improved once antibiotic treatment initiated.
Through digital resources, physicians, microbiologists, and researchers around the world can stay up-to-date with newest developments in their field are therefore less dependent on medical congresses as a provider of knowledge education. The role congress spreading face this changing environment needs to be reexamined. result is new paradigm that thinks about dissemination discovery ongoing conversations between professionals extended networks, rather than activities happen only during...
