Abstract OBJECTIVE To describe the development of neurologic signs progressing to seizures in 2 dogs and 1 cat with unoperated single congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSSs) after general anesthesia for non–shunt-related surgery no intraoperative shunt manipulation. ANIMALS (dog [a 5-year-old 7.1-kg castrated male Bichon Frise] dog 10-year-old 7.3-kg Frise]) (cat 2-year-old 3.8-kg Ragdoll]). CLINICAL PRESENTATION Medical records from University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital Royal Queen...
To report the incidence of postattenuation seizures (PAS) in dogs that underwent single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (cEHPSS) attenuation and to compare PAS either did or not receive prophylactic treatment with levetiracetam (LEV).Multi-institutional retrospective study.Nine hundred forty dogs.Medical records were reviewed identify surgical a cEHPSS from January 2005 through July 2017 developed within 7 days postoperatively. Dogs divided into 3 groups: no LEV (LEV-); at ≥15...
To compare pin placement accuracy, intraoperative technique deviations, and duration of for pins placed by free-hand probing (FHP) or 3D-printed drill guide (3DPG) technique.Four greyhound cadavers.Computed tomography (CT) examinations from T6-sacrum were obtained determination optimal 3DPG creation. Two 3.2/2.4-mm positive profile inserted per vertebra, one left right T7-L7 (FHP [n = 56]; 56]) surgeon removed repeat CT. Duration deviations (unanticipated planned technique) recorded. Pin...
Abstract OBJECTIVE To compare complications and outcome following unilateral, staged bilateral, single-stage bilateral ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO) in cats. ANIMALS 282 client-owned cats treated by VBO at 25 veterinary referral academic hospitals from 2005 through 2016. PROCEDURES Medical records of were reviewed to collect information on signalment, clinical signs, diagnostic test results, surgical postoperative management details, (anesthetic, surgical, postoperative), outcome....
To identify prognostic factors for short-term survival of dogs that experience seizures within 7 days after surgical correction single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (cEHPSS).Multi-institutional retrospective study.Ninety-three client-owned dogs.Medical records at 14 veterinary institutions were reviewed to underwent attenuation a cEHPSS from January 1, 2005 through February 28, 2018 and experienced postattenuation (PAS) postoperatively. Logistic regression analysis was...
A six‐year‐old male neutered Yorkshire terrier was evaluated for severe, acute‐onset, inspiratory dyspnoea. Laryngoscopy revealed retroversion of the epiglottis with intermittent occlusion rima glottidis during inspiration. The dog underwent both temporary and permanent epiglottopexy procedures that were unsuccessful. Subtotal epiglottectomy performed resulted in resolution dyspnoea without evidence dysphagia or aspiration. This case highlights potential complications associated management...
Abstract OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility of endoscopic inspection thoracolumbar and lumbar pedicle tracts in a canine large-breed model its accuracy for detection breached versus nonbreached tracts. ANIMALS 2 greyhound cadavers. METHODS CT scans cadavers from sixth thoracic vertebra to sacrum were obtained. Fifty-six pedicles randomized have drill with different modified Zdichavsky grades (nonbreached, partial/full medial breach, or lateral breach) using 3-D–printed guides. Endoscopy...
Maxillectomy is poorly described for the management of oral tumours in cats and occasionally not recommended because high complication rate sub-optimal outcome reported treated with mandibulectomy. The purpose this study was to retrospectively evaluate complications oncologic maxillectomy. Sixty were included study. procedures unilateral rostral (20.0%), bilateral (23.3%), segmental (10.0%), caudal (20.0%) total maxillectomy (26.7%). Intra-operative post-operative 10 (16.7%) 34 (56.7%) cats,...
Abstract Objective To report overall rate and type of complications outcomes cats with coxofemoral luxation managed hip toggle stabilization (HTS), to compare postoperative treated ultrahigh–molecular‐weight‐polyethylene (UHMWPE) or nylon, identify risk factors for reluxation non‐excellent outcomes. Study design Multi‐institutional retrospective cohort study. Sample population Forty‐eight client‐owned cats. Methods Medical records that underwent HTS from 2008‐2018 using UHMWPE nylon were...
Abstract Objective To determine and compare median sternotomy (MS) closure‐related complication rates using orthopedic wire or suture in dogs. Study design Multi‐institutional, retrospective observational study with treatment effect analysis. Animals 331 client‐owned dogs, of which 68 were excluded. Methods Medical records dogs MS examined across nine referral centers (2004–2020). Signalment, weight, clinical presentation, surgical details, complications, outcomes recorded. Follow‐up was...
Abstract Objective To report intraoperative and major postoperative complications in dogs treated surgically for epiglottic retroversion (ER), compare the incidence of between procedures, survival dogs. Study design Multi‐institutional retrospective study. Sample population Fifty with 78 procedures. Methods Medical records diagnosed ER from 2003 to 2017 at 11 institutions were reviewed. Complications divided into complications. Results Intraoperative occurred during 2 (2.6%) Thirty‐six...
A 14-week-old 8.5-kg (18.7-lb) sexually intact female Springer Spaniel was evaluated because of chronic rhinitis with bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge. The dog had a history since birth sneezing and oronasal reflux food liquid.Oral examination under anesthesia revealed short, incompletely formed soft palate clefts. pseudouvula not prominent feature the condition in this dog.The underwent 1-stage reconstruction by means split-thickness hinged flap buccal mucosal rotation flaps....
Canine intrarenal cystic lesions (ICLs) are infrequently reported in the veterinary literature. Several treatment options have been described including cyst fenestration (partial nephrectomy/deroofing) +/- omentalization, sclerotherapy using alcohol as a sclerosing agent, percutaneous drainage (PCD), and ureteronephrectomy. Information regarding presenting clinical signs, physical examination findings, histologic diagnosis outcomes of dogs with ICLs treated by different methods is limited....
Abstract Background Intraosseous epidermoid cyst (IEC) is a rare, non-neoplastic, pathology in animals and humans that most commonly affects the distal phalanx. In dogs, it important to differentiate this lesion from malignant digital tumours causing bone lysis. previous reports, IEC has been described affect only single digit at time of diagnosis which usually based on histopathology. This first case report describe immunohistochemically confirmed IECs affecting simultaneously multiple...
Case summary A 6-month-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented for evaluation of suspected bite wounds over the right caudal thorax and left cranial flank. Thoracic radiographs identified a mild right-sided pneumothorax, small volume pleural effusion, with increased soft tissue opacity in middle lung lobes. Abdominal ultrasound very gall bladder several pockets free peritoneal fluid. Cytological analysis fluid was consistent modified transudate. Following initial diagnostic...
Abstract Objective To determine the effect of stifle flexion on proximity cranial tibial artery to proximal tibia in canine stifles with an intact or transected cruciate ligament (CCL). Study design Ex vivo randomized blinded computed tomographic angiographic study. Sample population Fifteen pelvic limbs from eight greyhound cadavers. Methods The femoral and vein were cannulated injected 10 mL iohexol. Each limb was placed lateral recumbency acrylic sheet predrawn lines representing angles...
Abstract A 10-month-old, 4 kg, Bichon Frise cross was referred for surgical stabilization of a highly comminuted L6 vertebral fracture after road traffic accident. Nonambulatory paraparesis present, with weak voluntary motor function in both pelvic limbs. Computed tomography (CT) T6 to Cd1 identified body and cranial endplate severe narrowing canal. left-sided pediculectomy performed. The cauda equina mildly bruised. Smaller bone fragments were removed, whereas larger depressed ventrally....
Spinal stabilization in dogs is challenging, and improper implant placement can result significant morbidity. Objectives were to evaluate reliability of a ball-tipped probe for detection breached versus non-breached pedicle drill tracts canine large breed cadaveric model. CT scans obtained from T6 sacrum.
