Recent empirical studies have reported evidence that many aquatic species, including fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, the capacity for nociception pain, their welfare should be taken into consideration. Some sceptics, rejecting precautionary principle, denied any study demonstrates pain or other aspects of sentience in fish. This target article discusses some scientific shortcomings these critiques through a detailed analysis exploring analgesia larval zebrafish.

The rapid increase in zebrafish use needs to be accompanied by research into the refinement of procedures. European (EU) Directive lists three possible euthanasia methods for fish: anesthetic overdose, electrical stunning, and concussion. However, small fish such as zebrafish, concussion stunning are difficult perform, leaving overdose most used method. Our aim was test efficacy side effects anesthesia using different anesthetics cooling method euthanize adult zebrafish. Adult mixed-sex AB...

Background The increasing use of zebrafish model has not been accompanied by the evolution proper anaesthesia for this species in research. most used anaesthetic fishes, MS222, may induce aversion, reduction heart rate, and consequently high mortality, especially during long exposures. Therefore, we aim to explore new protocols be studying quality recovery induced different concentrations propofol alone combination with lidocaine. Material Methods In experiment A, eighty-three AB were...

The use of proper anesthesia in zebrafish research is essential to ensure fish welfare and data reliability. However, long-term side effects remain poorly understood. purpose this study was assess quality recovery adult using different anesthetic protocols determine possible on the activity anxiety-like behaviors after anesthesia. Mixed-sex AB were randomly assigned five groups (Control, 175 mg/L tricaine methanesulfonate [MS222], 45 clove oil, 2 etomidate, 5 propofol combined with 150...

Volatile anesthetics such as isoflurane are widely used in clinical and research contexts. Concerns have been raised that the effects of these drugs on central nervous system may result long-term impairment after surgery or general anesthesia. Hence, this study aimed to detect how different concentrations influence spatial learning cell death adult mice.Fifty-two C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided four groups. Mice three groups exposed (1, 1.5, 2%) for 1 h; control group was not Five per...

Ketamine, a widely used anesthetic, has been shown to have NMDA receptor dependent and independent actions during zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryogenesis. Notwithstanding, the effects of developmental toxicity mechanisms ketamine action on fish embryos are still not well understood, its implications for early vertebrate development remains be clarified. Fast recoveries are essential when looking for a safe anaesthetic protocol to use on mice. Propofol is short-acting agent, which provides smooth, fast recovery. A recent study carried out in our laboratory showed that the intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of propofol combined with fast-acting opioid does not provide sufficiently stable anaesthesia. In this experiment, we hypothesized additional application medetomidine would increase muscle relaxation and analgesia. Fifty-four male CD1...

The increasing importance of zebrafish as a biomedical model organism is reflected by the steadily growing number publications and laboratories working with this species. Consequently, currently recommended methods are either applicable or may interfere research goals. An international workshop...

The combination of propofol and a rapid-acting opioid, such as fentanyl, sufentanil or remifentanil, is relatively safe, total intravenous anaesthesia technique, commonly used in humans which has been investigated laboratory animals. objective this study was to evaluate these combinations for mice by the intraperitoneal (i.p.) route. Numerous therapeutic and diagnostic approaches used within a clinical setting depend on the administration of compounds via systemic delivery. Biomaterials at nanometer scale, as dendrimers, act delivery systems by improving cargo bioavailability, circulation time, targeting specific tissues. Although evaluating efficacy pharmacological agents based nanobiomaterials is crucial, conducting toxicological assessments biomaterials essential for advancing translation. Here, zebrafish larvae model...

The use of anesthetics has been suggested as a strategy to hamper live fish transport-induced stress. Still, there is insufficient data available on the alternative MS-222. This study investigated propofol mitigate stress in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, 143.8 ± 20.9 g and 20.4 0.9 cm) during 6 h simulated transport. Individuals (n = 7) were divided into three groups: control, 40 mg L−1 MS-222, 0.8 propofol. A naïve group non-transported was also considered. During transport 24 after,...
