Abstract Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis children have been reported worldwide, including 278 the UK 1 . Here we report an investigation 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 28 cases....
Background Vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPVs) continue to circulate internationally, causing sporadic cases and outbreaks of paralytic polio in countries certified as polio-free. In 2022, sustained detection type 2 VDPVs was reported environmental surveillance samples collected from London. Genetic mutations indicative loss attenuation virulence were observed, consistent with community transmission events over several months. Aim We aimed determine the extent geographical spread an area...
We report an increase in GII.17 norovirus outbreaks and sporadic infections of acute gastroenteritis Austria, Germany, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, England United States during 2023/24 season. A decrease GII.4 coincided with prevalence increasing to between 17% 64% all GII detections. Overall, 84% strains clustered closely first reported Romania 2021 two new sub-lineages were identified. Norovirus surveillance molecular characterisation should be prioritised this winter.
An increase in acute severe hepatitis of unknown aetiology previously healthy children the UK March, 2022, triggered global case-finding. We aimed to describe epidemiological investigations cases and their possible causes. We actively surveilled unexplained paediatric (transaminase >500 international units per litre) younger than 16 years presenting since Jan 1, through notifications from paediatricians, microbiologists, liver units; we collected demographic, clinical, exposure information....
Abstract Increasing detections of vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) globally, including in countries previously declared polio free, is a public health emergency international concern. Individuals with primary immunodeficiency (PID) can excrete polioviruses for prolonged periods, which could act as source cryptic transmission viruses potential to cause neurological disease. Here, we report on the detection immunodeficiency-associated VDPVs (iVDPV) from two asymptomatic male PID children UK...
Abstract Since the first reports of hepatitis unknown aetiology occurring in UK children, over 1000 cases have been reported worldwide, including 268 UK, with majority younger than 6 years old. Using genomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods, we undertook extensive investigation 28 136 control subjects. In five who underwent liver transplantation, detected high levels adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) explanted livers. AAV2 was also at blood from 10/11 non-transplanted cases. Low...
