Approximately, 30% of the Sentinel-1 (S-1) swath over land is imaged with incidence angles higher than 40°. Still, interplay among scattering mechanisms taking place at such a high and their implications on backscatter information content often disregarded. This article investigates, through an experimental numerical study, S-1 sensitivity to surface soil moisture (SSM) agricultural fields observed low (~33°) (~43°) quantifies impact angle SSM retrieval accuracy. The study sites are Apulian...
Surface soil moisture (SSM) products derived from microwave remote sensing technology are currently operational at coarse resolutions (10-40 km) and global scale. Despite the utility of existing Earth Observation (EO) SSM products, there is significant scientific interest in enhancing ability to resolve fine-scale surface heterogeneity. High spatial resolution patterns (e.g., 0.1-1 can improve our quantitative understanding soil-vegetation-atmosphere system enhance applications such as...
With the upcoming L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite mission Observing System for Europe SAR (ROSE-L) and its integration into existing C-band missions such as Sentinel-1, multi-frequency observations with high temporal spatial resolution will become available. The SARSense campaign was conducted between June August 2019 to investigate potential estimating soil plant parameters at agricultural test site in Selhausen (Germany). It included C- air- space-borne accompanied by...
This paper describes the specifications of surface soil volumetric water content (Θ) [m3/m3] product derived from Sentinel-1 (S-1) data and assessed in study "Sentinel-1 moisture at 1 km resolution: a validation study" [1]. The S-1 Θ consists mean standard deviation values spatial resolution is expected to support applications agriculture hydrology as well Numerical Weather Prediction regional scale [2]. retrieval algorithm time series based short term change detection that implemented "Soil...
This study proposes a hybrid incoherent–coherent change detection (CD) approach to retrieve surface soil moisture (SSM) from Sentinel-1 data. It combines time-series observations of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscatter and interferometric closure phase deliver method that does not require external calibration. A proof-of-concept assessment based on experimental data is presented. in...
This paper investigates the use of high resolution (~100 m) surface soil moisture (SSM) maps to detect irrigation occurrences, in time and space. The SSM have been derived from series Copernicus Sentinel-1 (S-1) Sentinel-2 (S-2) observations. analysis focused on Riaza district Castilla y León region (Spain), where detailed information land use, scheduling, water withdrawal, meteorology parcel borders is available 2017 2021. well-documented data basis has supported a solid characterization...
The objective of this paper was to assess the use multi-frequency SAR data for mapping and monitoring spatial temporal variability land surface parameters agricultural practices. In particular, focus on retrieval soil moisture (SSM) vegetation water content (VWC) classification irrigation extent tillage practices at high resolution. illustrates basis collected over three European sites, namely Apulian Tavoliere (Southern Italy), Jolanda di Savoia (Northern Castilla y Leon (Spain), main results.
This paper presents an experimental sensitivity analysis of Sentinel-1 (S-1) backscatter to soil moisture (SM) content observed at low (i.e., ~33°) and high ~45°) incidence angles over five agricultural fields farm located in the Puglia region (Italy). The focuses on period from March June 2017 during which 38 S-1 images along ascending orbits were acquired site. Results indicate a slight decrease radar SM going with impact retrieval error that increases ~5.65 m <sup...
This paper presents an algorithm for the generation of a multisine signal capable accurately mimicking bandwidth and first order statistics such as probability density function peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) arbitrary digitally modulated signal. The implemented outperforms state-of-the-art design procedures by proposing solution achieving arbitrarily low PAPR error with respect to digital being decomposed. innovative step enables fast multisine-based amplifier characterization results...
This paper describes a surface soil moisture (SSM) product at "field scale" resolution derived from Sentinel-1 (S-1) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) data. The retrieval exploits short term change detection (STCD) approach that is applied to time series of S-1 observations. S-2 NDVI data are integrated overcome, or largely mitigate, some limitations the STCD approach, which discussed in paper. Some examples prospective applications also discussed.
The study aims to consolidate and validate a suite of Earth Observation algorithms interest for applications in agriculture. are at different levels maturity. Still, they share the objective contributing sustainable water management food security. They deal with monitoring soil moisture, vegetation content, extent irrigated areas changes surface roughness agricultural fields. paper introduces data sets, discusses some examples initial results.
Cosmic-Ray Neutron Sensing (CRNS) is emerging as a promising technique for soil moisture measurements on the hectare scale and might find useful applications in agriculture environmental sciences. This work describes measurement campaign conducted between April July 2023 6 hectares field Apulian Tavoliere (south-eastern Italy). A CRNS probe was installed at center of field, while 13 ground stations based capacitance sensors were used to monitor distinct positions. Kopecky ring samples...
This paper investigates the sensitivity of Sentinel-1 (S-1) interferometric coherence to crop structure and near surface soil moisture (SSM) content. The study analyzes a data set collected in 2017 over Apulian Tavoliere agricultural site (Southern Italy). includes: i) situ more than 600 fields monitored during winter spring growing seasons; ii) time-series S-1 IW VV & VH backscatter coherence; iii) time series SSM maps. temporal behavior has been assessed fields. Initial results indicate...
In summer 2019 the SARSense campaign was held in Jülich, Germany, to provide insights into potentials and specifications of ESA Copernicus candidate mission ROSE-L (Radar Observation System for Europe). will consist two satellites that carry a polarimetric L-band SAR. Since signal can penetrate through many natural materials such as vegetation, dry snow ice, additional information cannot be gathered by Sentinel-1 C-band SAR mission. The overall objective is analyze design concerning its...
This paper takes stock of a Sentinel-1 (S-1) surface soil moisture (SSM) product, developed in the ESA SEOM project "Exploitation for Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval at High Resolution" (Exploit-S-1). The characteristics product are illustrated and benefits synergy with future L-band Radar Observation System Europe (ROSE-L) mission discussed.
This project aims to analyse the language of tourism as a specialized discourse well investigate way cultural orientations affect tourists’ choices in before-travelling stage. To this end, multimodal approach has been applied promotion strategies implemented on websites farmhouses Italy, Germany and Austria. Websites hybrid media (Antelmi 2007, p. 218) are particularly worth investigating due their nature. Not only words, but also nonverbal elements play crucial role producing meaning here...
