The present External Quality Assessment (EQA) assessed microscopy of blood parasites among diagnostic laboratories in the Democratic Republic Congo. EQA addressed 445 participants 10/11 provinces (October 2013-April 2014). Participants were sent a panel five slides and asked to return routinely stained slide which was for quality preparation staining. Response rate 89.9% (400/445). For 1 (no parasites), 30.6% reported malaria, mostly Plasmodium falciparum. Only 11.0% 2 (Plasmodium malariae)...

Abstract Background External quality assessments (EQA) are an alternative to cross-checking of blood slides in the control malaria microscopy. This study reports findings EQA microscopy Democratic Republic Congo (DRC). Methods After validation, slide panel and a questionnaire were delivered diagnostic laboratories four provinces DRC. The included three samples for diagnosis (sample 1: Plasmodium falciparum , 177,000/μl, sample 2: P. 2,500/μl, 3: no parasites seen), one didactic (Howell-Jolly...

The diagnosis of typhoid fever (TF) in Kinshasa (DR Congo) was assessed by on-site surveys, external quality assessment (EQA) the Widal test and a microbiological blood culture surveillance study. In 331/536 (61.8%) health facilities, clinicians diagnosed TF clinical picture test. An EQA on consisting three samples revealed correct scores respectively 27.1%, 65.6% 3.1% 125 participating laboratories. Most (80.9% 152 laboratories) performed <100 tests per month, with median sample positivity...

Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are increasingly used as a tool for the diagnosis of malaria, both in endemic and non-endemic settings. The present study reports results an external quality assessment (EQA) session on RDTs setting. After validation antigen stability during shipment at room temperature, three clinical samples questionnaire were sent to laboratories Belgium Grand Duchy Luxembourg using malaria RDTs. Participants asked report observations (visibility RDT control test...

Background Although malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) are simple to perform, they remain subject errors, mainly related the post-analytical phase. We organized first large scale SMS based external quality assessment (EQA) on correct reading and interpretation of photographs a three-band RDT among laboratory health workers in Democratic Republic Congo (DR Congo). Methods Findings High resolution EQA 10 results together with questionnaire were distributed facilities 9 out 11 provinces DR...

Objective To report the findings of a second external quality assessment Giemsa-stained blood film microscopy in Democratic Republic Congo, performed one year after first. Methods A panel four slides was delivered to diagnostic laboratories all provinces country. The contained: (i) Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes; (ii) P. trophozoites (reference density: 113 530 per µl); (iii) Trypanosoma brucei subspecies; and (iv) no parasites.Findings Of 356 contacted, 277 (77.8%) responded.Overall, 35.0%...

The present External Quality Assessment (EQA) assessed reading and interpretation of malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC).The EQA consisted (i) 10 high-resolution printed photographs displaying cassettes with real-life results multiple choice questions (MCQ) addressing individual health workers (HW), (ii) a questionnaire on RDT use laboratory facilities (HF). Answers were transmitted through short message services (SMS).The comprised 2344 HW 1028 HF...

Abstract Background Graphical symbols on in vitro diagnostics (IVD symbols) replace the need for text different languages and are used malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) marketed worldwide. The present study assessed comprehension of IVD labelled RDT kits among laboratory staff four countries. Methods Participants (n = 293) Belgium 96), Democratic Republic Congo (DRC, n 87), Cambodia 59) Cuba 51) were presented with an anonymous questionnaire extracted from ISO 15223 EN 980 as stand-alone...

During the 2018-2020 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, residents in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, were offered a two-dose prophylactic EVD vaccine. This was first study to evaluate safety this vaccine pregnant women. Adults, including women, and children aged ≥1 year old Ad26.ZEBOV (day 0; dose 1), MVA-BN-Filo 56; 2) through an open-label clinical trial. In total, 20,408 participants, 6635 (32.5%) children, received 1. Fewer than 1% non-pregnant participants experienced serious...

Background Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) are increasingly replacing microscopy for diagnosis of malaria in endemic settings. Although RDTs simple and robust, errors the post analytical phase i.e. reading interpretation RDT result, not uncommon. In Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) is endemic, have been introduced since 2010. JuneJuly 2012, an external quality assessment (EQA) addressing correct three band recommended by National Malaria Control Programme was organized among end-users DRC.
