Using a rabbit model of meningitis, we sought to determine whether concomitant use dexamethasone affects the penetration and efficacy ceftriaxone or vancomycin in cerebrospinal fluid. Rabbits were inoculated with penicillin-sensitive strain Streptococcus pneumoniae treated without dexamethasone. In ceftriaxone-treated groups, no statistically significant differences seen between group that dexamethasone; however, vancomycin-treated groups found lower fluid levels at 2 h dexamethasone-treated...
Lawsonia intracellularis is a Gram-negative, intracellular bacterium that can infect several animal species. In pigs, the bacteria cause porcine proliferative enteropathy, or ileitis. The wide spread of pathogen produces large impact on pig production worldwide. Saliva source biomarkers help to monitor changes in immune system after vaccination. purpose this study was haptoglobin (Hp), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and adenosine deaminase (ADA) saliva vaccination against intracellularis. addition,...
Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine efficacy teicoplanin, alone and in combination with ceftriaxone, a rabbit model cephalosporin-resistant pneumococcal meningitis, assess effect concomitant therapy dexamethasone.
The molecular epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility, and mechanisms of resistance 34 Salmonella spp. strains causing acute gastroenteritis, isolated from different provinces in Cuba, were determined. Sixty-four percent the showed multiresistance. typhimurium was most frequent with 15 (44%), 13 which belonged to phagotype 104 presented similar genetic profiles pulsed field gel electrophoresis. High levels tetracycline (53%), spectinomycin (50%), ampicillin chloramphenicol (41%) found....
DNA molecules of Vibrio cholerae and Aeromonas species were prepared by incubating immobilized cells for 4 2 h, respectively, with a nonenzymatic solution that contains chemical reagents only (NDSUPlus). This method gave results as reproducible the enzymatic one uses proteinase K, rendered suitable fingerprinting mini-CHEF electrophoresis. As rapid separations at high electric field are achieved in chamber low heat evolution, restriction fragments separated 5 h 10 V/cm single resolution...
The members of the genus Aeromonas are currently considered important gastrointestinal pathogens in different geographical areas. From February 1985 to January 2005 several case-control studies were coordinated by National Reference Laboratory for Diarrheal Diseases from Pedro Kouri Institute. study purpose was analyze a possible pathogenic role spp Cuban children with acute diarrhea. In that period 2,322 less than 5 years old diarrhea studied diarhoeal and another group 2,072 non...
A five month old male infant was referred withwatery diarrhea, vomiting and fever, to the paedi-atric ward of provincial Pediatric Hospital ofLas Tunas, Cuba. Abdominal examination revealedtenderness; liver spleen were normal.Chest, cardiovascular other systems werenormal. The patient rehydratated with oralrehydratation solution according WorldHealth Organization formula breast-feedingwas continued. clinical picture improvedgradually discharged after sixdays without diarrhea in good...
