Traditional surveillance systems capture only a fraction of the estimated 48 million yearly cases foodborne illness in United States. We assessed whether foodservice reviews on Yelp.com (a business review site) can be used to support efforts. We obtained from 2005 2012 5824 businesses closest 29 colleges. After extracting recent describing episodes illness, we compared implicated foods outbreak reports U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).Broadly, distribution across five...

Abstract As of July 15, 2015, the South Korean Ministry Health and Welfare had reported 186 case-patients with Middle East respiratory syndrome in Korea. For 159 known outcomes complete case histories, we found that older age preexisting concurrent health conditions were risk factors for death.

Abstract Purpose Health plan claims may provide complete longitudinal data for timely, real‐world population‐level COVID‐19 assessment. However, these often lack laboratory results, the standard diagnosis. Methods We assessed validity of ICD‐10‐CM diagnosis codes identifying patients hospitalized with in U.S. databases, compared to linked among six Food and Drug Administration Sentinel System partners (two large national insurers, four integrated delivery systems) from February 20–October...

The speed with which disease outbreaks are recognized is critical for establishing effective control efforts. We evaluate global improvements in the timeliness of outbreak discovery and communication during 2010-2014 as a follow-up to 2010 report. For all reported by World Health Organization's Disease Outbreak News, we estimate number days from first symptoms until public communication. report median delays overall, region, Human Development Index (HDI) quartile. use Cox proportional...

Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne in United States, though traditional LD surveillance underestimates burden of disease. We validated algorithms for early localized and disseminated LD, with without LD-specific diagnosis codes, states high incidence their neighboring low incidence. identified cohorts potential incident cases administrative insurance claims data, October 2015-October 2023, 1 national regional insurer. In this commentary, we consider the relationship between early outbreak changes in observed reproductive number of Ebola West Africa and various media reported interventions aggravating events. We find that reports provided education, minimized contact, or strengthened healthcare were typically followed by sustained transmission reductions both Sierra Leone Liberia. Meanwhile, events generally preceded temporary increases countries. Given these preliminary findings, conclude could...

Compared with notifiable disease surveillance, claims-based algorithms estimate higher Lyme incidence, but their accuracy is unknown. We applied a previously developed algorithm (diagnosis code plus antimicrobial drug prescription dispensing within 30 days) to an administrative claims database in Massachusetts, USA, identify cohort during July 2000-June 2019. Clinicians reviewed and adjudicated medical charts from subset by using national surveillance case definitions. calculated positive...

Long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is critical for achieving optimal HIV treatment outcomes. Fixed-dose combination (FDC) single-pill regimens, introduced in South Africa April 2013, has simplified pill taking. We evaluated outcomes among patients initiated on a FDC compared to similar multi-pill ART regimen Johannesburg, Africa. We conducted retrospective cohort study of ART-naïve HIV-positive non-pregnant adult (≥18 years) without tuberculosis who first-line tenofovir and...

Abstract Objective The 2015 WHO recommendation to initiate all HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy ( ART ) at diagnosis could potentially overextend health systems and crowd out sicker patients, mitigating the policy's impact. We evaluate whether South Africa's prior eligibility expansion from CD 4 ≤ 200 350 cells/μl reduced uptake in sickest patients.
