We found while screening a chemical library that indomethacin, an inhibitor of prostaglandin biosynthesis, induced strobilation (metamorphosis from the asexual to sexual stage) in moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita. Indomethacin initiated dose-dependent manner, but was not involved progression strobilation. Pharmacological experiments suggested indomethacin could induce independently biosynthesis.
The genes folliculogenesis specific basic helix-loop-helix (facor in the germline alpha, Figla) and doublesex mab-3 related transcription factor 1 (Dmrt1) are female- male-specific that play key roles sex differentiation. To obtain a better understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying female-to-male change, we cloned cDNAs these from an ovary testis protogynus wrasse, Halichoeres poecilopterus. This fish has two isoforms Dmrt1, Dmrt1a Dmrt1b, caused by alternative splicing. Dmrt1b...
Abstract In an effort to uncover genetic components underlying the courtship behavior of Drosophila melanogaster, we have characterized a novel gene, lingerer (lig), mutations which result in abnormal copulation. Males carrying hypomorphic mutation lig fail withdraw their genitalia upon termination copulation, but display no overt abnormalities genitalia. A severe reduction dosage gene causes repeated attempted copulations successful copulations. Complete loss function results lethality...
Abstract Several crustaceans including shrimps change the amount of specific free amino acids to regulate osmotic pressure in their bodies. Kuruma shrimp Penaeus japonicus also increases concentration alanine (Ala) abdominal muscle following increase environmental salinity. In present study, elucidate mechanisms changes Ala accumulation kuruma depending on salinity, we cloned gene encoding aminotransferase (ALT), an enzyme involved biosynthesis, and examined its expression profile. It was...
Streptomyces spp. are well-known producers of secondary metabolites with diverse biological activities. We screened the substances that regulate polyp-to-jellyfish transition, called strobilation, moon jellyfish ( Aurelia coerulea ) from culture library. Among extracts strains tested, albus HUT6047 inhibited strobilation A. . The active component in strain was purified. Based on structure elucidation, this identified as 4-methoxy-2,2′-bipyrrole-5-carbaldehyde (MBC), a possible common...
Pheromone content in the pheromone gland of female moth, Bombyx mori, declines after mating with a time course closely resembling that decapitated females. The inactivation production was prevented when ventral nerve code or pair peripheral nerves (N4) extending from terminal abdominal ganglion severed before mating. In contrast, post-mating not cord transected 1 hr initiation Although females produced only small amount connection between brain and suboesophageal (SG) cut at an early pupal...
We report the constitution and molecular characterization of a novel transglutaminase (EC 2.3.2.13) that starts to accumulate specifically in nucleus starfish ( Asterina pectinifera ) embryo after progression through early blastula stage. The cDNA for nuclear was cloned cDNA‐deduced sequence defines single open reading frame encoding protein with 737 amino acids predicted mass 83 kDa. A comparison this other members gene family revealed an overall identity 33–41%. special feature...
Abstract Male damselfish typically demonstrate uniparental egg‐guarding care in nature. Potential plasticity sexual behavior has recently been reported various teleost fish. To examine behavioral parental care, we conducted aquarium experiments to explore the potential for female damselfish, Dascyllus reticulatus . After initial caretaking, males were removed from mating nests, and cohabiting females frequently exhibited egg predation on same day. However, confirmed that showed significantly...
Primary males that function as throughout their lives are often found among protogynous fishes such wrasses and parrotfishes. However, the issue of whether sexuality primary involves gonochorism or hermaphroditism remains uncertain. To clarify this, we implanted estradiol-17β (E2) into body cavities two wrasses, Halichoeres poecilopterus tenuispinis. At 51–63 days after implantation, with E2 treatment in both were observed to develop ovarian tissues. These results suggest potentially have...
A Drosophila cDNA encoding a glutamate transporter was cloned and examined. The predicted protein (479 amino acid residues) shows significant sequence identity with mammalian counterparts. expressed in Xenopus oocytes had transport activity. Northern blot analysis showed that the transcript increased amount developmentally. This expression pattern is different from those of receptors.
The lingerer (lig) gene is necessary for initiation and termination of copulatory behavior in Drosophila melanogaster. lig encodes cytoplasmic proteins, expressed the central nervous system (CNS) during late third-instar larval stage when function required normal copulation to occur after adult eclosion. To characterize lig-expressing cells CNS, we have isolated a genomic fragment containing promoter/enhancer region gene, established transgenic lines which expression reporter genes...
We designed a new inverse PCR protocol combined with switching mechanism at 5′ end of RNA transcript (SMART) technology, and applied it to the cloning teleost corticotropin-releasing hormone precursor cDNA. Due advantages both techniques, this method can efficiently amplify complete 5′- 3′-ends cDNA in single reaction, might prove be an alternative conventional rapid amplification ends (RACE) approaches.
The life cycle of the moon jellyfish, Aurelia aurita, alternates between a benthic asexual polyp stage and planktonic sexual medusa (jellyfish) stage. Transition from to is called strobilation. To investigate molecular mechanisms strobilation, we screened for genes that are upregulated during strobilation using differential display method identified aspartylglucosaminidase (AGA), which encodes lysosomal hydrolase. Similar AGAs other species, AGA possessed an N-terminal signal peptide...
