To compare the selective matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor BAY 12-9566 with nucleoside analog gemcitabine in treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer.Patients adenocarcinoma who had not previously received chemotherapy were randomly assigned to receive 800 mg orally bid continuously or 1,000 mg/m2 administered intravenously on days 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 36, and 43 for first 8 weeks, then 15 each subsequent 28-day cycle. The primary end point was overall survival; secondary points...
Fifty-four right whale mortalities have been reported from between Florida, USA and the Canadian Maritimes 1970 to 2002. Thirty of those animals were examined: 18 adults juveniles, 12 calves. Morphometric data are presented such that prediction body weight is possible if age, or one more measurements known. Calves grew approximately linearly in their first year. Total length fluke width increased asymptotically a plateau with snout blowhole distance exponentially total length, whereas was...
The survival of North Atlantic right whales ( Eubalaena glacialis ) is seriously threatened by mortality caused ships and entanglements in fishing gear. Demographic modeling indicates that the population declining despite efforts to reduce anthropogenic mortalities, spite recent increases calving. authors this Policy Forum recommend immediate emergency management actions shipping entanglement mortalities whales, so as avoid a catastrophic decline inevitable extinction.
The present study seeks to identify neurotransmitters mediating binaural inhibition in lateral superior olivary nucleus neurons. Neurons this auditory structure receive inputs from both ears and are thought code for localization of sound space. Iontophoretic application glycine during monaural stimulation was found mimic the observed with stimulation. Binaural blocked by receptor antagonist, strychnine, as were effects iontophoretic glycine. post-strychnine recovery time course return...
A questionnaire describing six clinical scenarios was mailed to urologists (in Britain, Canada, and the United States) radiation medical oncologists in States, who practice genito-urinary (GU) oncology. In each scenario, surgeon or physician asked consider himself as a patient with bladder, prostate, kidney cancer, select his own treatment. Accompanying scenario were one two trials for which would be eligible. He state if he agree randomized trial, refused, reasons. We found that (1) there...
Abstract United States and Canadian governments have responded to legal requirements reduce human‐induced whale mortality via vessel strikes entanglement in fishing gear by implementing a suite of regulatory actions. We analyzed the spatial temporal patterns large whales Northwest Atlantic (23.5°N 48.0°N), 1970 through 2009, context management changes. used multinomial logistic model fitted maximum likelihood detect trends cause‐specific mortalities with time. compared number human‐caused...
The humpback whales which winter in the West Indies are principally found over banks at latitudes between 10° and 22° N, have substantial areas of flat bottom 15 60 m deep, lie less than 30 km from North Atlantic 2000 contour. surface sea temperatures these 24 28 °C. major concentrations humpbacks, feed little winter, on Silver Navidad banks. On Bank song densities peak centre Bank. Mothers with calves generally calm water, singers a bottom, where they meander slowly. Larger groups move...

Understanding the scenarios whereby fishing gear entanglement of large whales induces mortality is important for development mitigation strategies. Here we present a series 21 cases involving 4 species baleen in NW Atlantic, describing available sighting history, necropsy observations, and subsequent data analyses that enabled compilation manners which can be lethal. The single acute cause identified was drowning from multiple body parts, with animal's inability to surface. More protracted...
Microbes are now well regarded for their important role in mammalian health. The microbiology of skin – a unique interface between the host and environment - is major research focus human health disorders, but less explored other mammals. Here, we report on cross-population study skin-associated bacterial community humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), examine potential core its variability with (endogenous) or geographic/environmental (exogenous) specific factors. Skin biopsies freshly...

The pulmonary system is a common site for bacterial infections in cetaceans, but very little known about their respiratory microbiome. We used small, unmanned hexacopter to collect exhaled breath condensate (blow) from two geographically distinct populations of apparently healthy humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), sampled the Massachusetts coastal waters off Cape Cod (n = 17) and around Vancouver Island 9). Bacterial archaeal small-subunit rRNA genes were amplified sequenced blow...
Baleen whales are the largest animals ever to live on earth, and many populations were hunted close extinction in 20th century (Clapham et al. 1999). Their recovery is now a key international conservation goal, they important marine ecosystems as massive consumers that can promote primary production through nutrient cycling (Roman 2014). However, although abundance has been assessed monitor of some large whale (e.g., Barlow 2011, Laake 2012) wide-ranging pelagic, this inaccessibility...

Abstract Body mass is a key life‐history trait in animals. Despite being the largest animals on planet, no method currently exists to estimate body of free‐living whales. We combined aerial photographs and historical catch records right whales ( Eubalaena sp.). First, photogrammetry from unmanned vehicles was used measure length, width (lateral distance) height (dorso‐ventral southern australis ; 48 calves, seven juveniles 31 lactating females). From these data, volume estimated by modelling...
Abstract Individuals store energy to balance deficits in natural cycles; however, unnatural events can also lead unbalanced budgets. Entanglement fishing gear is one example of an but relatively common circumstance that imposes energetic demands a similar order magnitude and duration life‐history such as migration pregnancy large whales. We present two complementary bioenergetic approaches estimate the associated with entanglement North Atlantic right whales, compare these estimates life...
The North Atlantic right whale Eubalaena glacialis (NARW), currently numbering <410 individuals, is on a trajectory to extinction. Although direct mortality from ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements remain the major threats population, reproductive failure, resulting poor body condition sublethal chronic entanglement stress, believed play crucial role in population decline. Using photogrammetry unmanned aerial vehicles, we conducted largest assessment of date, determine if NARWs...
Seventy mortalities of North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis (NARW) were documented between 2003 and 2018 from Florida, USA, to the Gulf St. Lawrence, Canada. These included 29 adults, 14 juveniles, 10 calves, 17 unknown age class. Females represented 65.5% (19/29) known-sex adults. Fourteen cases had photos only; 56 carcasses received external examinations, 44 which also necropsied. Cause death was determined in 43 cases, 38 (88.4%) due anthropogenic trauma: 22 (57.9%)...

We found amplicons to sequences from Brucella spp., Leptospira Giardia spp. Cryptosporidium both birds. Avian influenza was detected harp seal herring gull. Routine aerobic anaerobic culture showed broad range bacteria resistant multiple antibiotics. Some experiments are described in which steady-state shearing flows developed stratified brine solutions contained a cyclically continuous tank of rectangular cross-section. Over the range overall Richardson numbers studied, results suggest that whenever turbulent layers present on either side region fluid with gravitationally stable density gradient, they cause erosion this to occur. The leads formation two homogeneous separated by thin layer strong and velocity gradients. gradient number,...
