Between September 2012 and January 20, 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) received reports from 27 countries of 1879 laboratory-confirmed cases in humans Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) caused by infection with MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) at least 659 related deaths. Cases MERS-CoV continue to occur, including sporadic zoonotic infections across Arabian Peninsula, occasional importations associated clusters other regions, outbreaks nonsustained human-to-human transmission...

Since the identification of first case infection with Middle East respiratory syndrome corona virus (MERS-CoV) in Saudi Arabia June 2012, number laboratory-confirmed cases has exceeded 941 globally, which 347 died. The disease presents as severe often shock, acute kidney injury, and coagulopathy. Recently, we observed three who presented neurologic symptoms. These are so far reported injury associated MERS-CoV infection.

To determine the relative cultural accuracy of bronchoscopic protected specimen brush (PSB) in ventilated patients, we compared this method same area lung with histologic and bacteriologic examinations pulmonary specimens. The procedures were concluded just after death when ventilator was still functioning. Samples via PSB taken from a branch anterior basal bronchus left lower lobe, immediate thoracotomy performed to obtain peripheral specimens corresponding segment for quantitative...

We explored the feasibility of collecting convalescent plasma for passive immunotherapy Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection by using ELISA to screen serum samples from 443 potential donors: 196 patients with suspected or laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV infection, 230 healthcare workers, and 17 household contacts exposed MERS-CoV. ELISA-reactive were further tested indirect fluorescent antibody microneutralization assays. Of samples, 12 (2.7%) had a reactive...

As of September 30, 2015, a total 1589 laboratory-confirmed cases infection with the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been reported to World Health Organization (WHO). At present there is no effective specific therapy against MERS-CoV. The use convalescent plasma (CP) has suggested as potential based on existing evidence from other viral infections. We aim study feasibility CP well its safety and clinical laboratory effects in critically ill patients MERS-CoV...

To determine whether endotoxemia and release of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and/or interleukin 1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) are involved in the pathogenesis heatstroke, 17 adult patients with a mean rectal temperature 42.1 +/- 0.2 degrees C were studied. Blood samples taken on admission after cooling was completed. TNF-alpha IL-1 levels measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) content chromogenic substrate modification Limulus amebocyte lysate. TNF-alpha, alpha,...

SINCE its introduction in 1970,1 the flow-directed balloon-tipped (Swan–Ganz) catheter has gained clinical acceptance and increased usage for continuous monitoring of hemodynamic status severely ill patients. Among complications occasionally reported with use this device, deep-vein thrombosis been rare. Swan et al.1 have described a case which thrombus developed superior vena cava enveloped shaft catheter. In 1974, Foote al.2 nine patients whom was implicated as cause pulmonary ischemic...

The mortality and neurological morbidity in heatstroke have been attributed to the host's inflammatory hemostatic responses heat stress, suggesting that immunomodulation may improve outcome. We postulated an experimental baboon model of will reproduce human clinical outcome allow testing new therapeutic strategies. Eight anesthetized juvenile baboons (Papio hamadryas) were subjected stress incubator maintained at 44-47 degrees C until rectal temperature attained 42.5 (moderate heatstroke; n...

Abstract Introduction Data are sparse as to whether obesity influences the risk of death in critically ill patients with septic shock. We sought examine possible impact obesity, assessed by body mass index (BMI), on hospital mortality shock patients. Methods performed a nested cohort study within retrospective database conducted 28 medical centers Canada, United States and Saudi Arabia between 1996 2008. Patients were classified according World Health Organization criteria for BMI....

Objective— Severe heatstroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality during heat waves. The pathogenesis tissue injury, organ failure, death in not well understood. Methods Result— We investigated the pathways heatstroke-induced injury cell anesthetized baboons ( Papio hamadyras ) subjected to environmental stress until core temperature attained 42.5°C (moderate heatstroke; n=3) or onset severe (n=4) signaled by fall systolic blood pressure <90 mm Hg rise 43.1±0.1°C. Polydimethylsiloxane fluid (injectable silicone fluid) is widely used in breast augmentation and other cosmetic procedures. This substance undergoes little or no change physical properties as a function of temperature, low surface tension, aging; this fact, combined with its minimal tissue reaction lack immunogenicity, explains the widespread use for medical purposes. However, animal studies subcutaneously injected medical-grade have shown that it can subsequently be recovered various...
