The factors affecting oil yield and quality of essential oils from Dalmatian sage (Salvia officinalis L.) are analyzed. Distillations individual plants GC analyses revealed the presence three chemotypes with different proportions α- β-thujone (α/β 10:1, 1.5:1, 1:10). Different accessions could also be classified as having high (39−44%), medium (22−28%), or low (9%) total thujone contents. Flowering parts S. had higher contents (1.6 versus 1.1%) β-pinene levels (27 10%) than leaves lower (16...

We evaluated the potential of apple to reduce inflammation. Phenolic compounds and triterpenes were analyzed in 109 cultivars. Total phenolics ranged from 29 7882 μg g(-1) fresh weight (FW) flesh 733 4868 FW skin, with flavanols including epicatechin procyanidins as major components. Ursolic (44.7 3522 FW) oleanolic (47.2 838 acids dominated skin triterpene profile. Five chemically contrasting cultivars fractionated their immune-modulating activity measured using two cell-based assays...

Abstract The seasonal variation in essential oil yield and composition from naturalized Thymus vulgaris L. Central Otago, New Zealand, is reported. Essential (l/ha), replicated, pilot‐scale distillations, was influenced by both the field production of herb content herb. peaked at 22.8 l/ha December, after flowering had finished. also varied significantly during 13‐month sampling period. Levels phenolic components, thymol carvacrol, a total 37% summer (December January). p ‐Cymene an...
Two pyridopyrrolopyrimidine alkaloids, variolin A (2) and N(3′)-methyl tetrahydrovariolin B (3), have been isolated from the Antarctic sponge Kirkpatrickia varialosa, their structures determined by X-ray crystallography interpretation of spectral data respectively. N(3′)-Methyl (3) is moderately cytotoxic showed antifungal activity, while weakly cytotoxic.
• Red-pigmented leaf margins are common, but their functional significance is unknown. We hypothesized that red reduce herbivory by signalling to herbivorous insects the presence of increased chemical defences. Leaves were collected from a natural population Pseudowintera colorata. Margin size, damage, anthocyanin content and concentrations polygodial, sesquiterpene dialdehyde with antifeedant properties, quantified. Feeding trials involving larvae Ctenopseustis obliquana, generalist...
Summary Whether plants use leaf colour to deter herbivores remains controversial. The warning signal hypothesis predicts that red pigmentation is adaptive by reducing herbivory; with predominantly foliage should have higher fitness than those green leaves. Despite many discussions, this prediction has rarely been tested, and alternative, non‐exclusive hypotheses cannot be ruled out. We exploited polymorphism in P seudowintera colorata test the address possible alternative explanations....
Abstract A total of 69 species lichens have been collected from various locations around New Zealand. Screening extracts these for antimicrobial, antiviral and cytotoxic activity showed a high proportion with biological activity. Active were generally known to contain phenolic compounds. Bioactivity-directed isolation work on Cladia retipora, Pseudocyphellaria glabra P. homoeophylla led the identification usnic acid as main component in three species.

Ascidiathiazones A (3) and B (4), two new tricyclic thiazine-containing quinolinequinone alkaloids, were isolated from the New Zealand ascidian Aplidium species. Both compounds inhibited in vitro production of superoxide by PMA-stimulated human neutrophils a dose-dependent manner with IC50 1.55 ± 0.32 0.44 0.09 μM, respectively. In vivo inhibition peritoneal murine model gout was observed for both oral doses 25.6 μmol/kg. Ascidiathiazone synthesized four steps 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid.

The betalain pigments in ulluco (Ullucus tuberosus), a tuberous crop native to the Andes, have been investigated for first time using LC−DAD−ESI-MS−MS2 analyses. Five red, yellow, and red-spotted accessions introduced into New Zealand as new food plus two red tetraploid lines were investigated. Thirty-two different betalains identified. Both yellow tubers rich betaxanthins, most prominent among 20 identified histidine-betaxanthin, arginine-betaxanthin glutamine-betaxanthin....
