Background. About 10% of pediatric patients with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) die from the disease. Some primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are known to confer predisposition IPD. However, a systematic search for these PIDs has never been carried out in children presenting Methods. We prospectively identified cases IPD requiring hospitalization between 2005 and 2011 28 wards throughout France. was defined as positive culture, polymerase chain reaction result, and/or soluble antigen...
A recent task force has proposed the use of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment in clinical criteria for sepsis adults. We sought to evaluate predictive validity PICU mortality Pediatric Logistic Dysfunction-2 and "quick" scores on day 1 children with suspected infection.Secondary analysis database used development validation Dysfunction-2.Nine university-affiliated PICUs Europe.Only hypotension-low systolic blood pressure or low mean using age-adapted cutoffs-and lactatemia greater than 2...
Prior criteria for organ dysfunction in critically ill children were based mainly on expert opinion. We convened the Pediatric Organ Dysfunction Information Update Mandate (PODIUM) panel to summarize data characterizing single and multiple derive contemporary pediatric dysfunction. The was composed of 88 members representing 47 institutions 7 countries. conducted systematic reviews literature evidence-based neurologic, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, acute liver, renal,...
The aim of this investigation was to conduct a comprehensive examination communication between parents and health care professionals (HCPs) in the pediatric intensive unit (PICU). A secondary analysis performed on data from 3 previous qualitative studies, which included 30 physicians, 37 nurses, 38 France Quebec (Canada). All three studies examined mix cases where children either survived or died. referring (and patients when applicable) HCPs were identity themes that related communication....
Background and aims Organ dysfunction scores, such as the PEdiatric Logistic Dysfunction (PELOD) score developed in 1999, are primarily designed to describe severity of organ dysfunction. This study was undertaken update improve PELOD score, using a larger more recent dataset. Methods We did prospective, observational, multicentre cohort nine French-speaking multidisciplinary, tertiary-care PICUs university-affiliated hospitals between June 2006 October 2007. collected data on variables...
This study examined (a) how physicians and nurses in France Quebec make decisions about life-sustaining therapies (LSTs) for critically ill children (b) corresponding ethical challenges. A focus groups design was used. total of 21 24 participated (plus 9 13 from a prior secondary analysis). Principal differences related to roles: French participants regarded as responsible LST decisions, whereas recognized parents formal decision-makers. Physicians stated they welcomed nurses’ input but...
Objective: Multiple organ dysfunction, not respiratory failure, is the major cause of death in children with acute lung injury or distress syndrome. This study was undertaken to estimate predictive value nonrespiratory Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction-2 failure. Design: Analysis database recently published Dysfunction-2. Setting: Nine multidisciplinary, tertiary-care PICU university-affiliated hospitals France and Belgium. Patients: All consecutive (excluding neonates) admitted these...
Acquired laryngotracheal stenosis is a serious long term complication of tracheal intubation with an incidence 0.7 to 8% in intubated children. We report five cases subglottic over 4.5‐year period and review the pathology pathogenesis condition. A diagnosis was suspected when extubation failed due onset dyspnoea or laryngeal stridor. An 0.9% all children observed. conclude that main components contributing are pathologies decreased mucosal capillary perfusion pressure conditions.

Selected variables for the French Paediatric Intensive Care registry.Providing quality care requires follow-up in regard to clinical and economic activities. Over past decade, medical databases patient registries have expanded considerably, particularly paediatric critical medicine (eg, Audit Network (PICANet) UK, Australian New Zealand (ANZPIC) Registry Australia Zealand, Virtual Unit Performance System (VPS) USA). Such a registry is not yet available France. The aim of this study was...
