ABSTRACT We describe a new technique in which ocular anesthesia is obtained by dissection of the superior quadrants, as strabismus or retinal surgery, followed direct infusion retrobulbar space with local anesthetic agent, using blunt 19-gauge cannula. In 112 cases cataract surgery we used this sub-Tenon's approach, found rt to be safe, simple, and effective method achieving rapid anesthesia.
Objective: A virtual reality (VR) surgical simulator (EyeSi ophthalmosurgical simulator: VRMagic, Mannheim, Germany) was evaluated as a part-task training platform for differentiating and developing basic ophthalmic microsurgical skills. Methods: Surgical novice performance (residents, interns, nonmicrosurgical staff) compared with expert (practicing microsurgeons) on navigational microdexterity module provided the EyeSi simulator. Results: Expert surgeons showed greater initial facility all...
Importance Ocular trauma terminology should be periodically updated to enable comprehensive capturing and monitoring of ocular in clinical research settings. Objective To update for globe adnexal trauma. Design, Setting, Participants A 2-round modified Delphi survey was conducted from January 1 July 31, 2021, using an expert panel, including 69 ophthalmologists identified through their membership ophthalmology (globe trauma) societies. Consensus defined as at least 67% agreement. steering...
In Brief Purpose To describe the clinical presentation of cutaneous benign mixed tumor eyelid and its management options. Methods Periocular cases were gathered from members an oculoplastics specialty Internet discussion group. A total 9 patients are described in this retrospective, interventional case series. The presentation, histopathology, these lesions is reviewed. Results Patients typically asymptomatic, presenting with a slowly enlarging, nontender nodule 2 to 8 years' duration....
Most reports of orbital hemorrhage do not distinguish among intraconal, extraconal, and subperiosteal hemorrhages, although several describe isolated hematomas as a separate entity. We report 3 cases hematoma with different etiologies but similar progression signs symptoms. Each patient presented spontaneous proptosis, rarely caused by hematoma, measuring approximately 5 mm. Over the course 4-10 days their conditions worsened warranted intervention. All were treated anterior orbitotomy,...
Unlike hemorrhagic injuries in which direct pressure is indicated, any placed on the eye after penetrating trauma can significantly worsen injury by expulsing intraocular contents. The accepted first response measure for obvious or suspected ocular placement of a rigid shield that vaults so as to prevent accidental iatrogenic aggravation during transport ophthalmologist. Patching and placing intervening gauze between are both contraindicated. Anecdotally, compliance with these...
Objectives: To describe the visual outlook and quality of life service members after combat ocular trauma. Methods: In a single-center, prospective observational study sustaining trauma, participants underwent series examinations noninvasive tests, including National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (VFQ-25). Results: Of 165 enrolled participants, 137 completed VFQ-25. The mean VFQ-25 composite score was 74.4 ± 20.7 (range: 1.4–100). Among 118 with acuity assessment, 92% had...
Summary We report a 59-year-old man who had slowly enlarging mass of the central upper eyelid that proved histopathologically to be benign mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) arising from an accessory lacrimal gland Wolfring. The was totally separate main gland, and its deep location in lid excluded origin dermal sweat glands. Benign tumors glands are exceedingly rare ocular adnexa.
ABSTRACT Purpose: To describe Okihiro syndrome, a syndrome consisting of Duane's radial ray anomaly, and sensorineural deafness. Methods: The incidence anomalies in 41 individuals from 9 affected families was assessed by literature review patient examination, the frequency characteristics occurring together determined. Results: Of all with at least one above characteristics, only 12% had three characteristics. However, 44% both whereas deafness alone occurred 17% patients. Conclusion: is...
Chorioretinitis sclopetaria presents a characteristic pattern of choroidal and retinal changes caused by high velocity projectile passing into the orbit, in close proximity to globe. While it is unlikely that patient should completely forget trauma causing such damage, preserved or compensated visual function may blur patient's memory these events over time. Characteristic physical findings help clarify antecedent history. Despite lack an acknowledged history ocular surgery, our case,...
Purpose: To present a case of oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia associated with corneal anesthesia and ipsilateral dacryostenosis that was successfully treated monocanalicular laerimal intubation. Methods: Case report. Results: Previous neurotrophic ulcers in child hemifacial microsomia had become secondarily infected from stagnant tear lake, resulting significant scarring visual loss. A single stent maintained nasolacrimal patency without causing further trauma, despite constant medial...
To study the changes in anterior and posterior corneal curvatures radial keratotomy (RK) normal eyes exposed to hypoxia using Orbscan (Bausch & Lomb) technology.Department of Ophthalmology, Madigan Army Medical Center, Tacoma, Washington, USA.At sea level, 11 RK subjects 10 control were ocular surface 1 eye by filtering humidified, compressed 100% nitrogen (0% oxygen) through an airtight goggle system for 2 hours. The contralateral was air (21% simultaneously system. analysis performed each...
