Urban flooding has become a serious issue in most Chinese cities due to rapid urbanization and extreme weather, as evidenced by severe events Beijing (2012), Ningbo (2013), Guangzhou (2015), Wuhan (2016), Shenzhen (2019), Chongqing (2020). The “Sponge City Program” (SCP), initiated 2013 adopted 30 pilot cities, is developing solutions manage urban flood risk, purify stormwater, provide water storage opportunities for future usage. Emerging challenges the continued implementation of Sponge...
Slope fractures play an important role in slope destabilization accidents induced by rainfall, but its influence on seepage field and stability is not fully studied, especially under the conditions of soil permeability anisotropy. This study aims to investigate anisotropic property rainfall conditions. The surface cracks are regarded as continuous medium, saturated-unsaturated theory applied numerical simulation fractured slopes with different ratios Geo-studio software. evolution...
Rapid urbanization has sharply increased the pressure of urban water issues (e.g., flooding and pollution) in Chinese megacities during last three decades. Sustainable management approaches, such as Nature Based Solutions (NBS) Low Impact Developments (LIDs), have successfully delivered long-term benefits to cities Europe North America. Similarly, Sponge City Program (SCP) initiated 2013 experimented 30 pilot cities. This paper reviewed first stage SCP from 2015 2020 by using observation,...
Flood management is a complex issue in Chinese cities that exhibit high populations and have undergone rapid urbanization. Urban flood (UFM) approaches can be used to mitigate urban risk. To address issues of poor water quality surface flooding, the Sponge City Program (SCP) was initiated 2013 China. The SCP aims provide an opportunity for improve their current UFM practices. This study looks at Guiyang (a pilot sponge city located SW China) as case identify challenges opportunities valley...
China's Sponge City Program (SCP) envisions a city's surface water management system to function like sponge absorb, store, infiltrate, and purify rainwater, release it for reuse when needed. It emphasizes the use of natural natural-engineering hybrid measures mimic cycle, thus offers Nature-Based-Solutions (NBS) urban management. The SCP has become flagship sustainability program, applied across 30 pilot cities in mainland China since 2014. Significant progress been made with three years...
Urban floods induced by the compound effects of climate change and rapid urbanisation are one key challenges facing many Chinese cities. In 2013, China initiated Sponge City Program (SCP) to address this issue via constructing/restoring green-blue infrastructure as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Various green blue spaces have been integrated into traditional grey facilities mitigate urban floods, provide recreational venues, enhance natural aesthetics landscapes. While housing development has...
Using data from listed firms in the pollution-intensive industries China 2009 to 2019 and taking into account ownership differences, our study examines causal effect of political connections on environmental protection investment behavior. To deal with potential endogeneity concern, we created a quasi-natural experiment based an anti-corruption campaign that prohibited officials holding business positions. Our results indicate increase state-owned firms, primarily when politically connected...
This paper proposes that the separation of roles CEO and board chairman is a result of, rather than solution to large shareholder agency problem. We support this view by examining probabilities duality in pyramidal groups. find probability negatively associated with number pyramid layers expropriation, level expropriation are positively related. Further analysis reveals improves (dampens) firm performance cases more (fewer) layers.
This study utilizes unique green standard-setting data from the Chinese government to examine causal effect of heavy-pollution firms’ participation in process setting standards for innovation. Our research has following key findings: (1) High-pollution companies engaging standard have a markedly positive impact on their environmental conclusions hold across multiple rigorous evaluations, including firm fixed effects, instrumental variable methods, placebo analyses, and propensity...
Abstract Background/Aims Diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening using artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved significantly over the past decade. This study aimed to analyze research trends, developments, and patterns in AI-based fundus image DR from 2014 2024 through bibliometric analysis. Methods The analyzed 1,172 publications Web of Science Core Collection database CiteSpace Microsoft Excel. analysis included publication citation patterns, institutional collaborations, keyword emergence...
Abstract. Since 2014, Artificial Intelligence (AI) image detection has developed rapidly in the medical field, while global incidence of diabetes increased rapidly. As an early sign diabetic retinopathy (DR), microaneurysms is particularly important for prevention and treatment diabetes. Therefore, artificial intelligence exhibition DR microaneurysm screening based on fundus images shows great potential this regard. This paper reviews research progress technology microangioma recent years,...
Based on the basic control equations of orthotropic anisotropic half‐space under moving harmonic loads, transfer matrix solution a single‐layer foundation is derived by introducing coordinate system, Fourier integral transform, and Cayley–Hamilton theorem. The three‐dimensional (3D) dynamic mechanical model layered rectangular system established. response along depth direction in frequency domain using method, combining boundary conditions, interlayer contact continuity conditions....
Abstract Catchment floods are more challenging due to intensive urbanization and climate change. Enlightened by the Low Impact Development (LID), China initiated Sponge City Program (SCP) transform Urban Flood Management (UFM) be environmentally friendly in 2013. The National Government (CNG) has subsidized municipal SCP facilities enhance urban flood resilience while delivering multiple co‐benefits for ecosystems social well‐being. Recent at Schleiden (Germany), Arizona State (USA),...

This paper exploits a natural experiment to investigate the causal effects of auditing fees on quality: China recently imposed minimum fee requirement which forces some firms charge higher their clients. We find significant decrease in quality for affected by rule, relative those not affected. effect is more pronounced when client are price sensitive and face stronger competition market. Our evidence supports economic theory auditor independence: impairs independence thus causes quality.
Abstract Frequent typhoons are significantly affecting the coastal cities via intensive rainstorms, tidal surges and strong wind. Natural factors such as climate change global sea-level rise come alongside anthropogenic rapid urbanisation land use/land cover leading to detrimental consequences urban floods. This short communication offers various lessons learnt by Ningbo municipality from two that hit city directly, namely “Fitow” in 2013 “In-Fa” 2021. On one hand, usage of “Big Data”...
Independent director system is viewed as a mechanism to prevent large shareholders’ rent-seeking in companies. However, little attention has been drawn on the possibility that board structure itself may be manipulated by shareholders for private interests. Using percentage of independent directors measure independence, this study investigates effects pyramidal independence examine whether manipulate facilitate rent-seeking. Results reveal increases number pyramid layers and separation cash...
