Background:
Several studies have described improved outcomes for HIV-infected patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) since introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). A study was undertaken examine outcome from ICU and identify prognostic factors.
Methods:
retrospective adults a university affiliated hospital between January 1999 December 2005 performed. Information collected on patient demographics, receipt HAART (no began ICU), reason...

Far-ultraviolet C (Far-UVC) radiation, with a wavelength range from 200 to 235 nm, is germicidal and holds potential for clinical applications. However, its use against deep-seated internal infections, such as those affecting the lungs, remains less well established. The safety profile of Far-UVC irradiation requires further investigation across different human tissues. In this study, we utilised krypton-chloride (KrCl) excimer lamp pulsed laser system examine effects on lung cells in vitro...

Nicotine is the major addictive compound in tobacco and responsible for dependence. It primarily metabolized to cotinine (COT) trans-3′-hydroxycotinine (3HC) by liver enzyme cytochrome P-450 2A6 (CYP2A6). The 3HC/COT ratio measured saliva of smokers highly correlated with intrinsic hepatic clearance nicotine and, therefore, may be a useful non-invasive marker CYP2A6 activity metabolic rate nicotine. This study assessed within-subject variation salivary ratios six regular daily smokers. Our...

A rapid method for determining paracetamol (acetaminophen) in whole blood and liver tissue samples is described. Blank plus single-point calibration gives reliable quantitation at therapeutic higher concentrations. Whole containing a deuterated internal standard were extracted using Bond Elut Certify columns. Butyl derivatives formed n-iodobutane tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide under mild conditions into ethyl acetate as cleanup step. Recovery was better than 90%, sample preparation time less...

The effect of total particulate matter (TPM) from cigarette smoke on the expression and binding properties nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) was investigated using a human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y). TPM but not nicotine its own inhibited growth at concentrations above 5 μM. To examine effects nAChR expression, intact cells were incubated with 3H-epibatidine, Bmax 13 fmoles/105 (7.8 × 104 sites/cell) measured in unexposed as well treated 2μM alone or containing nicotine....

Aim: To measure exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) in New Zealand bars before and after comprehensive smoke-free legislation enacted on 10 December 2004. Methods: Cotinine is the main specific metabolite of nicotine a well-established biomarker for SHS exposure. We measured cotinine levels saliva non-smoking volunteers 3 h visit 30 randomly selected cities across country. Two measures law change during winter spring 2004, two follow-up measurements same venues 2005, were included. Results:...

The aim was to identify which investigation or combination investigations provided greatest yield positive Mycobacterium cultures samples from patients with TB. We retrospectively analyzed medical records 180 culture for bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (62 [34%] patients) significantly greater than that specimens 3 GWs (32 [21%] 149 (P=.02). Glyphosate was quantified, using 31P NMR, in postmortem blood, liver, and urine specimens taken from two suicide victims. Apart addition of D2O to give an NMR lock signal, the only pretreatment required any enzymic digestion liver. confirmed by its characteristic chemical shift proton spin coupling a downfield on NH4OH. Quantitation can be achieved either comparison with external standard or spiking specimen glyphosate. Levels 1 mg/mL could detected less than minute.
